Forced off bus at midnight, soldier abducted & robbed robbed in Ludhiana; police delay filing FIR despite Army intervention.

Ludhiana: A soldier returning home on leave was robbed of cash, mobile phones, and even his uniform near the city — but police only filed a report after a month-long delay and intervention from the Army. The incident occurred on June 1, when Pradeep Rao, 25, a soldier from Sikar, Rajasthan, serving in Uri, Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory, was en route his hometown aboard a Raj-Raj Travels bus. Rao claims that a dispute with the conductor escalated after he refused to share his seat with an extra passenger. Even though fellow travellers defused the situation, Rao says he was later forced off the bus around midnight at an isolated spot near Dehlon. Within minutes, a multi-utility vehicle with five men inside approached him. "They said they knew I'd been removed from the bus and offered to help me rejoin it. I trusted them and got in," Rao told The TOI over the phone. "But after 15 minutes, they started beating me up and robbed me before dumping me on the roadside." Among the items stolen, Rao listed: Two iPhones, a gold chain, ₹20,700 cash, his Army uniform and shoes, a bag containing a watch, power bank, Bluetooth device, clothes, and notes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Shut hospital delays treatment After the assault, Rao walked to the Dehlon police station, where officers first directed him to get a medical examination. He went to the nearby civil hospital, only to find it closed. He waited until morning, received treatment for a head injury, and returned to the police station on June 2 to give his statement. "I was told an FIR would be filed, so I left for home. But nothing happened for weeks," said Rao. "I had to rejoin duty, so I informed my seniors in Uri. They contacted senior officers in Ludhiana, who then asked me to return." Rao returned to Ludhiana on July 5 — more than a month after the incident. Though police initially told him it would take just five minutes to sign documents, he said he was made to stay three days, during which he was questioned repeatedly before the FIR was registered, finally. Conductor's role disputed The soldier suspects the bus conductor conspired in the attack. However, inspector Sukhjinder Singh, station house officer at Dehlon police station, said police had found elements of the story suspicious. "How could someone agree to sit in a random car at midnight?" the police officer said. He claimed to have contacted the bus conductor and gathered from him that Rao had misbehaved with co-passengers under drunken influence — prompting his removal from the bus. "The conductor is not from Ludhiana. The bus route runs from Kashmir to Rajasthan. We verified facts and only after that contacted the soldier to return for statement recording," said the inspector. "Once he came back, we lodged the FIR." Police said Rao's mobile phone had been put on surveillance, and efforts were on to trace the robbers. No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
