Tensions Brewing In BJP Coalition In Tripura? Tipra Motha Chief Meets Governor
Agartala: Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma held a meeting with Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Sunday, a day after his colleague said the party was contemplating withdrawing support from the ruling BJP-led coalition in the state. The high-profile engagement came hours after former chief minister and BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb visited Mr Debbarma, intensifying speculation about deepening rifts within the Manik Saha-led government. The core of the friction lies in growing discontent within TMP over two critical issues: the perceived lack of progress in implementing the Tripartite Accord signed in March 2024 and insufficient action against illegal infiltration, particularly following a mid-May notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) concerning Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants in the state. The TMP contested the 2023 assembly polls alone but in March last year, after signing a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government, joined the BJP-IPFT coalition government. The BJP-IPFT alliance had retained power in Tripura by winning 33 seats in the 60-member assembly. While the BJP received 32 seats, the IPFT could manage one. The TMP, which contested the assembly elections for the first time, secured 13 of the 42 seats it contested. After the meeting with the Governor, Mr Debbarma remained tight-lipped on specific details, stating, "Many things have been discussed. I will say whatever needs to be said, but this is a private meeting and I don't think it should be discussed in the public domain." Met the Hon Governor of Tripura Shri N. "Infiltration is a serious problem in Tripura," he said. "The future of the state and the entire Northeast is at stake. If we do not unite to stop this now, it will be a grave injustice to our next generation, who deserve a better tomorrow." He issued an appeal transcending party politics, urging all political outfits to unite against the threat. "This is bigger than politics. All political parties should jointly fight to stop illegal infiltration in Tripura. It affects not just our state, but the entire Northeast and India." Addressing the status of his party's alliance with the BJP and ongoing discussions, Mr Debbarma confirmed, "I am in regular contact with the Chief Minister. I spoke to him yesterday and will speak again if necessary. We have discussed various matters for the betterment of Tripura." Reacting to Chief Minister Saha's statement earlier Sunday that the implementation process of the Tripartite Agreement is underway, Mr Debbarma expressed cautious optimism. "Things are in progress - but the results must be visible on the ground. The Chief Minister is aware of the urgency. I have shared my views with him, and he has listened. Now we hope for action." The political temperature had already risen significantly on Saturday. TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma threatened the party's withdrawal of support from the ruling alliance during a press conference. He also claimed that BJP MP Kriti Singh Debbarma, who is the TMP chief's sister and was a joint candidate of both parties, had expressed a willingness to resign if commitments made by both the state and central governments remained unfulfilled. Reacting to Mr Debbarma's remarks, Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said his government has not received any official communication from the alliance partner. Speaking to reporters in Agartala during a public outreach programme marking 11 years of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, Mr Saha said, "What their party members say is their matter, but I haven't received anything in writing." When asked about Tipra Motha leaders expressing frustration over the time-bound implementation of the Accord, he said, "I am in regular talks with the Tipra Motha chief. The process is ongoing."

TIPRA Motha MLA says ready to withdraw support from BJP govt; party chief denies
AGARTALA: An MLA of Tripura's ruling alliance partner TIPRA Motha on Saturday said the party was ready to withdraw support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government and walk alone, citing the government's failure to control illegal immigration and fulfill promises made in the tripartite Tiprasa Accord last year. TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma. (File Photo) TIPRA Motha MLA and rebel-turned political leader Ranjit Debbarma said they had waited for 1.5 years since the accord was signed to reach an amicable solution to problems of history, land rights, political rights, economic development, identity, culture, language etc. faced by tribals without any progress and decided to withdraw support unless the accord is implemented soon. However, TIPRA Motha founder and supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma told journalists that he wasn't aware of the statements made by Ranjit Debbarma and added that he would inquire about it. He also said that he had a word with chief minister Manik Saha about 'genuine frustration' among tribals centering the pending Tiprasa Accord and added that the CM had promised him to take up the matter with the central government at the right platform to ensure amicable resolutions. Speaking to reporters, MLA Ranjit Debbarma, who was the chief of the dreaded insurgent outfit All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) before returning to normal life and winning the assembly elections two years ago, said: 'What's the benefit of even staying a part of the government? We never left our core demand of Greater Tipraland. Meanwhile, the 125th amendment bill, by-election for vacant seats in the ADC council, ADC village council polls haven't been held yet (long after they were scheduled to be held). We have waited to see some progress in the Tiprasa Accord but there is no progress till now. We are ready to withdraw support and leave the government. We shall be joining the central government for discussion for one last time this month before deciding.' He also claimed that 13 MLAs of the tribal party, its ministers and even BJP MP Kriti Devi Debbarma, the younger sister of Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma who joined BJP shortly before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and won the Parliamentary polls afterwards, were ready to resign from their positions. Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma said, 'I have spoken to chief minister Dr. Manik Saha and communicated the genuine frustration among tribals in the villages due to unfulfillment of the Tiprasa Accord. I also discussed the large number of illegal immigrants coming inside Tripura from Bangladesh amidst the prevailing situation there. The CM has assured me that he would take it up at the right platform to ensure proper resolution to the accord.' Asked if his party would take the hard line if the accord isn't fulfilled shortly, Pradyot Kishore said he would like to repose faith in the CM considering the latter has assured him to personally take up the issue with New Delhi. Former chief minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb said he feels Ranjit Debbarma isn't the right person to declare policy for TIPRA Motha and considering that Motha is a ruling alliance partner of BJP, whatever Pradyot Kishore says is considered as the tribal party's policy. However, opposition leader and CPI(M) politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury came out in stark criticism of the ruling alliance and said BJP and TIPRA Motha fixed the alliance despite not agreeing on many issues and such a disagreement was bound to happen. He, however, said that he wouldn't comment anymore on the internal difference of decision within Motha. The BJP now has nine ministers in the 12 member cabinet in Tripura, while IPFT has one minister and TIPRA Motha has one cabinet minister and one minister of state.

Treat Pak and B'desh equally while addressing security concerns: Pradyot to Centre
1 2 Agartala: TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Friday called upon the Centre to maintain consistent standards while addressing security concerns from both Pakistan and Bangladesh. "I fully support the Government of India's firm stance against Pakistan. But the same tone of seriousness must be shown when similar incidents or threats emerge from our eastern border. A life lost in east India is no less valuable than one lost in the north or west. We, too, are proud Indians," said Pradyot. He highlighted recent developments in Bangladesh, including reports of an ISI general's visit and the establishment of a Chinese air base in North Bengal. He expressed concern over statements by Mohammad Yunus from Bangladesh's interim govt. "Tripura, given its location, is especially vulnerable. The areas of Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, and Chittagong — once part of Tripura — now see actions that threaten regional peace and our historical ties," Pradyot said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unlock High-Paying Foreign Jobs in 2025 – Apply Today! The Government of India must treat Pakistan and Bangladesh on equal terms when it comes to matters of national security." Supporting the Centre's actions following the Pahalgam terror incident, he said, "Pakistan and Bangladesh may attempt to surround India from the west and east. The Centre must be equally vigilant. Just because Delhi is geographically closer to Pakistan doesn't mean the concerns of people in the East are any less significant."
