Activist tells researchers to use statistics for social good

Kolhapur: Senior social activist Dr Abhay Bang told attendees at the inaugural speech of the 'International Conference on Statistics' at SUK that statisticians must go beyond their own sphere and investigate social problems. Dr Bang spoke on the topic of 'Research with People'. He gave a presentation to all researchers, including statisticians, on how statistics was useful in various health experiments conducted in the context of tribal communities at his organisation, Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health (SEARCH), Gadchiroli. Dr. Bang said, "Statistics should be used for broader social welfare. Researchers need to give priority to going to places where there are problems instead of going to places with facilities. People should be observed, and that information should be analysed along with obtaining comprehensive information." In the inaugural address, senior statistician Dr Prakash Patil said, "It is important that eminent personalities in statistics have come to Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK) for the conference. The innovative researchers participating in the conference have got a great opportunity to interact with all of them." After the inaugural session, senior statistician Dr Anil Gore gave a lecture on the topic of 'Jatayu Fails Again', whereas Dr Prakash Patil spoke on the topic of 'On Parametrically Guided Non-Parametric Estimation'.
