Use of Kannada made mandatory in govt work; files not in state language to be returned
Bengaluru: In a firm push to uphold Kannada as the language of governance, the state has made it mandatory for all govt departments to extensively use Kannada in official administration. The directive, issued by chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, warns of disciplinary action against officials failing to comply. The circular, released Tuesday, comes in the wake of repeated complaints by the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) over non-compliance with earlier instructions. It reiterates that all official correspondence, file notations, meeting agendas, nameplates, and documentation must be in Kannada. It excludes communication with the Centre, courts, or other states. "All departments must respond in Kannada to applications and letters received in Kannada," the circular states. It also mandates that nameplates of govt offices be displayed only in Kannada. Legislative proceedings, official correspondence, notices, and internal communications such as meeting agendas and file notes should also be prepared in the state's official language. "Even forms, record books, and templates provided in English must be filled out in Kannada wherever applicable," the circular states. "Any government file that lacks notes or correspondence in Kannada should be returned for proper revision and clarification," he ordered. He reminded officials that it is their responsibility to implement the policy at all levels of governance. The order applies to all officials and staff in govt departments, corporations, boards, universities, aided institutions, and local bodies. Welcoming the move, KDA president Purushottam Bilimale said in a letter to Rajneesh: "The warning of disciplinary action has already had a significant and positive impact. Prakash Raj meets CM Meanwhile, actor Prakash Raj and farmer representatives met chief minister Siddaramaiah Thursday and demanded that the govt withdraw its notification to acquire their land for an aerospace park at Devanahalli's Channarayapatna village. Raj later told reporters Siddaramaiah had promised to drop the acquisition plan. "He had visited the protest site when he was in the opposition and had termed the acquisition an injustice," Raj said. He said farmers would have no livelihoods if their fertile agricultural land was acquired. "Should they be watchmen and cleaners in industries? We are aware of the deception taking place in the name of development," he said. Organisers of Devanahalli Chalo protest accused industries minister MB Patil of "collaborating" with corporates. They termed him 'corporate contract minister' and said that there were several forces behind him lobbying for the land.

Devanahalli farmers serve 24-hour ultimatum to govt. to shelve land acquisition
Farmers opposing the acquisition of 1,777 acres in 13 villages of Devanahalli taluk for a proposed aerospace park have served a 24-hour ultimatum to the State government to shelve the acquisition process in full. Failing this, they have threatened to launch an intensified struggle from Thursday. The declaration was made at the 'Devanahalli Chalo' protest by farmers on Wednesday that saw people from various walks of life, including actor Prakash Raj, experts like T.N. Prakash Kammaradi, academicians and social activists taking part in it. Later, in a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the protesters said: 'For the past 1,178 days, we have been fighting for saving our land and livelihood. People of all castes, like brothers and sisters, have united and fought together. We have knocked on the doors of those in power. This tug-of-war is enough. A final resolution must be reached. Either you must leave us alone to live our lives or you must permanently imprison us with our families and declare that companies are more important to you than us.' They said that the then-ruling BJP government decided in January 2022 to evict them and give away their 1,777 acres of land to private companies. But the nearly 800 families who own this land had decided against giving away their land. Recalling that the public opinion elicited by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board had showed that 80% of farmers had refused to part with their land, they argued that it was necessary as per norms to shelve the land. Questioning the commitment of Mr. Siddaramaiah on protecting their interests, they pointed out that when in Opposition, the Congress had opposed the project in the Assembly and he had visited them during the protest and promised to cancel the acquisition process if he were to get power. 'This protest has been organised now with the decision to knock on your doors firmly for the last time,' they told the Chief Minister in the letter. Referring to the offer by Ministers M.B. Patil and K.H. Muniyappa of keeping three of the 13 villages out of the land acquisition process, the farmers described it as 'divide-and-rule strategy' and reiterated that they would reject such a proposal.

Last Updated: Likening Raj's rhetoric to that of an enemy agent, BJP said that it's more shameful when a good character actor, who preaches things on screen, acts like a villain in real life. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday hit out at actor Prakash Raj over his controversial remarks linking Operation Sindoor and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Likening Raj's rhetoric to that of an enemy agent, BJP said that it's more shameful when a good character actor, who preaches so many things on screen, acts like a villain in real life. What Prakash Raj Said? In a follow-up post, he questioned, 'But why will women take #Sindoor from this old man?", a comment many saw as a personal dig at PM Modi's age and marital status. BJP Reacts BJP leader NV Subhash condemned Prakash Raj's remarks as 'deeply shameful" and 'disrespectful" to Indian women. He urged the actor to take back his comments saying that such remarks doesn't go well with his stature. 'This kind of statement doesn't go very well with the versatile actor, or his stature, always talking about Modi, belittling the Indian Army, democratic values of society, I expect him to withdraw his words, because this is a direct attack on women. It is more shameful that a good, character actor, when he preaches so many things on celluloid, but when he comes to real life, he is like a villain," he said as quoted by news agency PTI. Subhash further likened the actor to an ISI agent or a traitor over his 'Sindoor' comment. 'I think he is more dangerous than an ISI agent, or a traitor who always wants to make hole in democratic values. He has his mother, sister, he should not make such statements against women… He should immediately withdraw his words," he added. Operation Sindoor India launched 'precision strikes" under Operation Sindoor on nine terror targets in Pakistan and PoK following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.
