1,800-year-old inscription unearthed in Telangana's Yadadri

HYDERABAD: A fragmentary Brahmi inscription dating back to the second century CE was discovered at Chada in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district during recent excavations by the Telangana Department of heritage. The inscription, engraved on a stone slab, is written in Prakrit language and Brahmi script, typical of the Satavahana period. Though partially damaged, the inscription includes the phrase 'sacha(va)lo[ka] hita sukhaya', which translates to 'for the well-being and happiness of all worlds'. Archaeological Survey of India Director (Epigraphy) K Muniratnam Reddy believes that the inscription records the donation of a slab (pato) to a vihara (Buddhist monastery), indicating the site's importance as a Buddhist centre during the Satavahana era. 'The Telangana government continues to support archaeological research through its Department of Heritage and is actively developing Buddhist tourism circuits across the State,' he added.

India stands for service, humanity: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described India as the world's most ancient living civilisation. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Acharya Shri Vidyanand Ji Muniraj, he said, 'India is a service-oriented country, a humanity-oriented country, and our government has granted Prakrit the status of a 'classical language' while also running a campaign to digitise India's ancient manuscripts.' 'To further enrich our cultural heritage, more such significant works need to be done,' the Prime Minister added. He emphasised, 'India has endured for thousands of years because its ideas, philosophical thought, and worldview are eternal.' He described India as 'a nation defined by service and guided by humanity,' adding that India introduced the power of non-violence to the world. Modi asserted, 'India's spirit of service is unconditional—beyond self-interest and inspired by selflessness,' and noted that his government acts with people's participation in mind. 'All our efforts will be in the spirit of Jan Bhagidari, with the mantra of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Prayas.' Calling the centenary celebration a historic spiritual moment, he said, 'It carries the memory of an era and echoes the life of a great ascetic.' Modi was conferred the title 'Dharm Chakravarti', which he humbly accepted and dedicated to Mother India. Remembering Acharya Vidyanand as a patriot, musician and Digambar Muni, he said the Acharya's life was a means of social and cultural reconstruction. He highlighted the recognition of Prakrit as a classical language and digitisation of Jain scriptures as part of India's cultural preservation efforts, adding that the nation must continue such initiatives with the same spirit of collective effort.

My government committed to freeing India from colonial mindset: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: PM Modi asserted that his government is committed to freeing the nation from the colonial mindset and advancing it with equal emphasis on development and heritage, while safeguarding the enduring vitality of Indian languages. He was addressing the centenary celebrations of Jain saint Acharya Vidyanand Maharaj at Vigyan Bhawan on Saturday. "We are promoting mother tongues in higher education. And that is why I said from the Red Fort that we must free the country from the mentality of colonialism. We must move forward with development and heritage together," he said countering opposition from some states to the Centre's three-language formula and accusation of Hindi imposition. Modi highlighted the govt's recent recognition of Prakrit as a classical language in Oct 2024, alongside efforts to digitise ancient Jain scriptures and promote mother tongues in higher education. On the occasion, the PM was conferred with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti', to which he said, "I do not consider myself worthy of it, but our tradition teaches us to accept what is given by saints as prasad. Therefore, I humbly accept this prasad of yours and dedicate it at the feet of Mother India." he also referred to the preceding speech of a Jain seer, noting that he was blessing " Operation Sindoor ". PM's mere mention of "Jo humein chhedega (those who trouble us)" brought massive cheers from the audience, but he did not dwell any further on the issue. Before Modi's address, Acharya Pragya Sagar Maharaj endorsed "Operation Sindoor", saying the PM demonstrated unprecedented leadership, conveying the message that India doesn't believe in conflicts but is capable of giving a befitting reply in case someone throws a challenge. Modi said Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj used to say, "life can become imbued with dharma only when life itself becomes service." "This thought is connected to the essence of Jain philosophy and India's consciousness. India prioritises service (and) humanity. When, for thousands of years, the world was trying to quell violence with violence, India taught the power of non-violence. We placed the spirit of serving humanity above all. "
