BESS units at solar power plants across Karnataka
Bidadi: Karnataka's Energy Minister K J George announced that battery storage systems must be installed in all solar power plants across the state in future. He was speaking at the inauguration of a fully automated 5 GWh Battery Energy Storage unit set up by Pace Digitek's Lineage Power in Bidadi. 'The solar power generated during the day must be stored for use at night. To achieve this, battery storage systems capable of storing at least two hours of solar power must be integrated into all solar power plants,' George said. He emphasised the importance of storage in strengthening renewable energy infrastructure. 'Renewable energy now contributes to 65 percent of Karnataka's total power generation. Although solar and wind energy production has grown significantly, effective storage systems are essential to capture this energy and supply it as needed. Storage ensures grid stability and enables better energy management, especially during periods of demand. The central government is also promoting storage projects to support this effort, and it is encouraging to see private companies actively participating,' he said. Highlighting Karnataka's legacy in the power sector, George added, 'Karnataka has always been a leader in the power generation. The first hydroelectric power project in Asia was established during the reign of Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. We must continue to build on this rich legacy. A new pumped storage project is now being launched at Sharavathi with the approval of the central government. I thank Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy for his support and cooperation.' Detailing the state's storage roadmap, George said, 'Although Karnataka generates more power than its demand, we currently lack adequate storage. To address this, we plan to implement major storage projects, including 2000 MW through the Sharavathi Pumped Storage, 1500 MW at Varahi, 1000 MW at Pavagada, and a 2000 MW battery storage facility at Rapte. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Sharavathi project has already been approved by the Central Electricity Authority. The project will be developed between Talakalale in Shivamogga and the Gerusoppa reservoirs in Uttara Kannada, downstream of Linganamakki.' Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, who inaugurated the battery storage unit, said that battery storage systems are crucial for achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).' The central government is placing high priority on developing storage infrastructure to ensure that solar and wind power can be effectively utilized even during non-generation hours. It is encouraging that Karnataka is leading with projects like Sharavathi and Varahi pumped storage. Battery storage also offers immense investment potential, and I urge entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in this growing sector,' he further added, 'The first revolution in India was electricity, followed by television, and then the Internet and smart phones, which transformed our lives. Now, the next big change will come through battery storage systems, which will redefine how we consume and manage power. We are all set to witness this transformation.' TN asks Centre to release Rs 2,670 crore in pending dues
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has requested the union government to release pending dues amounting to Rs 2,670.64 crore. These dues relate to expenses incurred by the state for paddy procurement, rice fortification, and subsidies for ragi and sugar. Of the roughly 2.25 crore ration cards in Tamil Nadu, the cost of supplying rice through the Public Distribution System (PDS) to 1.12 crore cards (covering 3.6 crore beneficiaries) is fully borne by the centre under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). Of the total outstanding dues of Rs 2,670.64 crore, a sum of Rs 2,181.88 crore has been carried over from the financial years 2016-17 to 2020-21. Additionally, Rs 431.55 crore is pending as subsidy for ration cards that were migrated within Tamil Nadu during the same period. In relation to the supply of fortified rice, the state government incurred an expenditure of Rs 244.06 crore, of which the centre has released only Rs 197.26 crore, leaving a balance of Rs 46.80 crore. Food and Civil Supplies Minister R Sakkarapani submitted a memorandum on this matter to Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, on Wednesday. According to official sources, the centre disburses funds to the state at regular intervals under various heads, including procurement, milling, and distribution of rice through the PDS. These disbursals are based on claims submitted via the online portal

Pralhad Joshi inaugurates BESS in Bengaluru; ₹5,400 cr additional VGF coming soon
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy , Pralhad Joshi , on Friday inaugurated a Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) manufacturing facility in the Bidadi Industrial Area, Bengaluru. With an annual manufacturing capacity of 5 GWh, this facility stands as one of the largest and most advanced BESS plants in the nation. The newly inaugurated facility has a fully automated cell-to-pack assembly line, signaling a move towards precision-driven, high-quality production with minimal human intervention. This advanced manufacturing capability is expected to significantly contribute to grid stability, facilitate renewable energy integration, manage peak demand, and aid in frequency regulation. During the inauguration, Minister Joshi emphasised the critical role of reliable energy storage in achieving India's ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. "As more renewable energy comes into our grid, having reliable storage is more important than ever," he stated. Further demonstrating the government's commitment to energy storage, Minister Joshi announced plans to roll out an additional ₹5,400 crore as viability gap funding (VGF) to support the establishment of 30 GWh of battery storage systems. This new allocation comes on top of the existing ₹3,700 crore under the current VGF scheme, which has already facilitated the implementation of 13.2 GWh of BESS projects. "As India rolls out the VGF scheme for battery storage and works with stakeholders across sectors to grow the storage market, having world-class manufacturing like this will be very important," the minister remarked. "It will help meet rising demand, reduce imports, and make our power grid more efficient. Our renewable capacity is growing fast: we are adding 25–30 GW every year." Highlighting the immense potential of the sector, Minister Joshi cited the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), which projects the country's energy storage sector to attract a staggering ₹4.79 lakh crore investment by 2032. Furthermore, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates a project requirement of 411.4 GWh of energy storage systems by 2032, comprising 175.18 GWh from Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) and 236.22 GWh from BESS. "I believe that India can become a global manufacturing hub for BESS, from batteries and inverters to software and control systems," Minister Joshi added. "Between 2022 and 2032, India plans to add over 47 GW of battery storage capacity, with a total investment of around ₹3.5 lakh crore."

Siddaramaiah slams Centre, seeks fair share for Karnataka
Raichur, June 23 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday urged the central government to ensure a fair allocation of funds to the state under the 16th Finance Commission, claiming Karnataka lost nearly Rs 80,000 crore in devolution when compared to the 14th Finance Commission period. Addressing reporters in Raichur, Siddaramaiah accused BJP MPs from the state of "failing" to defend Karnataka's fiscal interests, stating, 'Not a single BJP MP has spoken against this injustice.' The CM specifically targeted Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, accusing him of not securing the release of Rs 11,495 crore recommended as a special grant for Karnataka. 'Despite his closeness to the Prime Minister, he has failed the state. He has no moral right to speak on Karnataka's welfare,' Siddaramaiah charged. Reiterating Karnataka's long-standing demand for a special grant for the development of the Kalyana Karnataka region, Siddaramaiah said the state government already spends Rs 5,000 crore annually for the area's development, and urged the Centre to contribute its share. He also said the state would consider setting up a dedicated ministry for the region to bolster progress. Responding to various issues, the Chief Minister acknowledged Minister HK Patil's suggestion to set up a special court to expedite illegal mining cases and recover pending dues. Recalling his past efforts, Siddaramaiah cited his role in raising the issue in the Assembly and participating in the Bellary padayatra, and noted that the Santosh Hegde Lokayukta report still awaits adequate follow-up. Siddaramaiah also addressed concerns from Congress MLA Raju Kage about development deficits in Kagwad, assuring that he would hold discussions with the legislator and prioritise special grants for constituencies in need. On allegations by MLA Belur Gopalakrishna regarding irregularities in housing schemes, he said the government would seek more information, and added that MLA B.R. Patil is scheduled to meet him on June 25 to discuss matters concerning the Housing Department. Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar told reporters that both the Chief Minister and the Housing Minister would issue a detailed clarification over BR Patil's allegations of corruption in the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation.
