KEA plans preliminary round of counselling for UG students in Karnataka amid server issues, seat matrix delays
With delays in releasing seat matrices for several professional courses, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) is considering conducting a preliminary counselling round to accommodate students who are certain about the undergraduate course they wish to pursue. Seat matrices for courses in engineering, veterinary sciences, agriculture, bachelor of physiotherapy, and allied health sciences have already been released. Option entry has been enabled for these streams, and students can now submit their preferences through the official KEA portal. However, seat matrices for other courses — including medical, dental, Ayurveda, homeopathy, Unani, BSc nursing, architecture, and yoga & naturopathy — are still awaiting approval from the respective departments. Compounding the delay, the KEA website continued to face technical issues, with the 'option entry' portal displaying maintenance messages for the second day in a row on Friday. The time of resumption was revised throughout the day, leaving many students anxious. KEA executive director H Prasanna said a preliminary round is being considered for students who are firm about their choice of course. He explained that about 20 per cent of students fall into this category, and the idea is to conduct a round exclusively for them in which only Choice 1 will be enabled. In the counselling process, once a seat is allotted, students can either accept the seat and confirm their admission, hold the seat and participate in the next round, give up the seat and continue the process, or exit from it entirely. The special round would be restricted to those who intend to immediately accept and join the allotted seat. While server-related issues are gradually stabilising, KEA has extended the 'option entry' deadline from July 15 to July 18 to ensure candidates are not disadvantaged. Prasanna advised students not to panic and to use this additional time wisely. He urged them to prepare a rough list of their preferred colleges and courses with corresponding codes on paper before logging into the system. This, he said, would reduce the load on the portal by preventing prolonged logins and improve access for all users. KEA has stated that candidates will receive notifications once the 'option entry' portal is fully operational again. Students have been asked to regularly check the official website for updates regarding the revised schedule for the first round of seat allotment. According to the latest announcement, the mock allotment results will be declared on July 21, and the final allotment results will be published on July 28. NEET-UG 2025 document verification from July 17 Candidates who registered for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET-UG 2025 and paid the application fee after July 7, especially those claiming seats under categories from 'A' to 'O' and under the 'Z' class, must appear in person for document verification at the KEA office in Bengaluru between July 17 and 19. This verification is mandatory for those seeking admission to medical, dental, Ayurveda, homeopathy, and Unani courses. Special category candidates, including differently abled applicants, and those under categories 'A' to 'O' and 'Z', must follow the document verification schedule published on the KEA website. The list of original documents required has already been made available during the Undergraduate Common Entrance Test (UGCET) process and must be carefully reviewed by the candidates.

Amid seat matrix & website issues, Karnataka Examinations Authority considers preliminary counselling round
Bengaluru: Following the delay in the announcement of seat matrices for courses such as medical and dental, Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) is considering holding a preliminary round before the actual first round for courses whose matrices are available. The seat matrices for engineering, veterinary, agriculture, bachelor of physiotherapy, and allied health science courses have been released. Option entry has been initiated, and candidates can enter their choices through the official link. Meanwhile, the seat matrices for medical, dental, Ayurveda, homeopathy, Unani, BSc nursing, architecture, and yoga & naturopathy courses haven't yet been released by the concerned departments. Usually, counselling is held simultaneously for all courses, and students have the freedom to give a mix of all courses during the time of option entry. KEA is considering whether one round can be held for students who are very sure of the course they want to join. "Around 20% of students are very sure of what they want. We're contemplating whether a round can be held exclusively catering to them. Choice 1 is for the student who likes the seat and wants to join. In choice 2, students can participate in the second round of counselling by holding the allotted seat. In choice 3, the student can participate in the second round without holding any seat. With choice 4, students who aren't satisfied can exit. So, the preliminary round is meant only for students who want to exercise choice 1. KEA website continues to malfunction On Friday, the KEA website malfunctioned on the second straight day. It kept displaying the message that the option-entry portal was under maintenance. The time when the website would be functional again also kept being postponed. KEA said the issue is with the state data centre. "The data centre is down. Our team is working with the e-governance department," said Prasanna. "We were allotted 10 servers. Five of these were malfunctioning," he said. Following the malfunctioning, KEA extended the dates for option entry till July 18 from the earlier July 15. "Students should make a rough draft of the colleges and courses they want to choose on a paper and not log in for a long time in the website," KEA said in a press release late evening. Students and their guardians, meanwhile, were left exasperated. "This time, KEA charged Rs 750 upfront for participating in counselling. Even then, there has been no improvement in service. If the server is the issue, they should think about an alternative well in advance. There is no planning or vision in the govt departments," said a parent.

Common Entrance Test option entry begins, but server crash leaves students frustrated
Bengaluru: Barely a few hours after Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) announced the launch of option entry for Common Entrance Test (CET) 2025 counselling Wednesday evening, its server crashed on Thursday morning, leaving thousands of students stranded and unable to access the portal. KEA officials claimed the disruption lasted only two hours in the morning. However, students said the issue persisted well into the afternoon, affecting various activities, including choosing colleges and courses for UGCET, entering roll number for NEET, etc. "Our state data centre requested a shutdown for some maintenance work. It has been rectified now. Unlike private institutions, we are mandated to host data only in the state data centre because of security protocol. Several other govt services share this infrastructure, so when thousands of students log in at once, it creates load issues," said H Prasanna, executive director of KEA. Students also reported problems with the Captcha system, which took nearly 40 seconds to generate. "The Captcha issue was due to enhanced security requirements. That too has been resolved," Prasanna said. "There's enough time till July 15 for students to complete their option entry. No need to panic." Server crashes, delays, and forced logouts have occurred every year. At least this time they informed us through social media," said Raghavendra Hegde, a CET counsellor. A parent added, "It is ironic that in a city known for its IT infrastructure, KEA can't maintain a stable server. Most nursing students come from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Imposing additional fees is unjust and unacceptable," said medical education minister Sharan Prakash Patil during a meeting with the Association of Nursing Colleges at Vikasa Soudha on Thursday. He stated that the existing fee structure — Rs 10,000 under the govt quota, Rs 1 lakh under management quota, and Rs 1.4 lakh for non-Karnataka students — will continue. "Any college charging more than the approved fee will face penalties and legal action. We won't hesitate to revoke their affiliation," he asserted. Currently, there are 611 nursing colleges in Karnataka with around 35,000 seats. Of these, 80% are filled by the management, while 20% fall under govt quota. The minister also directed Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) to ensure reimbursement of fees to nursing colleges within 30 days. He clarified that only the govt will decide on filling unallocated seats.

Personal remarks on Prashanthi Reddy, attack on Prasanna Kumar Reddy's house brings old rivalry to the fore
Unidentified miscreants, ransacked the residence of former Kovur MLA Nallapureddy Prasanna Kumar Reddy on Monday night. The attackers reportedly barged into the residence, damaged the furniture and left in a huff, not before issuing a warning to the former MLA's mother N. Srilakshmi, who was alone at home at that time. The attack came in the backdrop of the reported derogatory remark allegedly made by Mr. Prasanna Kumar Reddy at a party meeting early on Monday against the current MLA and TTD Trust Board member Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy, also the wife of Member of Parliament Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy. At a meeting of party workers, the former MLA had reportedly talked ill of Ms. Prashanthi, though she is distantly related to him. The talk came as a rude shock not only to the people of the constituency, but also to the party workers and the media persons present at the venue. It may be recalled that ahead of the General Elections 2024, Mr. Prasanna Kumarr Reddy had made a similar personal remark against Ms. Prashanthi Reddy, when the two were pitted against each other in Kovur. This time, Mr. Prasanna Kumar Reddy insisted that he stood by his comment and would never go back on his statement. After filing a complaint personally with the Superintendent of Police by naming the members of Vemireddy family and their followers, Mr. Prasanna Kumar Reddy however expressed displeasure at the department's functioning and said he had no faith on getting justice on this issue. Prashanthi turns emotional Meanwhile, Ms. Prashanthi Reddy turned emotional against the comments made against her and said it amounted to 'character assassination'. She said she would file a defamation case against him and also take the issue to the National Commission for Women (NCW). She however denied any role in the attack on Mr. Prasanna's residence and said her party, which had values as its foundation, would never encourage such attacks. Party workers took exception to the 'below the belt' remark and staged a demonstration in Kovur against the alleged cheap behaviour on Tuesday. Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy expressed solidarity with Ms. Reddy and demanded a public apology from Mr. Prasanna. While maintaining that the TDP would never encourage attacks, he said the attack on Mr. Prasanna's residence could have been resorted to by any of the beneficiaries of the Vemireddy family.

KEA: Opportunity to enter NEET roll number till July 8
The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has activated a link on its official website for candidates who have already applied for UGCET and qualified in the NEET exam to enter their NEET roll number. Candidates will be allowed to enter their roll numbers until 11 a.m. on July 8. Those seeking admission to medical, dental, and AYUSH courses must mandatorily enter their NEET roll number, according to KEA Executive Director H. Prasanna in a release. Once candidates enter their roll number, it will be cross-verified with NTA data. If found eligible through UGNEET, candidates will be allowed to download a copy of their application form. They can then download their verification slip, he added. Candidates who qualified in NEET but have not yet applied to KEA will be given another chance to register and submit their application between July 7 and 10. The schedule for document verification of these newly applied candidates will be released in the coming days, he explained. All candidates who have claimed NRI ward status in their application must appear in person with original documents at the KEA office between July 8 and 10 for verification, Prasanna said. On July 8, candidates with ranks up to 4 lakhs in NEET must attend, on July 9, those with ranks up to 8 lakhs, on July 10, those with ranks up to 12 lakhs must attend verification. Candidates who have applied for admission to St. John's Medical College under Category-2 to Category-8 must appear for document verification on July 9 and 10 at the college itself. The verification will take place in the Council Hall of the Medical College in Koramangala, and candidates must be physically present on both days with all original documents.
