Traffic constable suspended after viral video shows him taking bribe
Chandigarh: A UT traffic police constable has been suspended after a video showing him allegedly accepting Rs 500 from a motorist went viral. The UT police department has also initiated a departmental inquiry into the incident. Constable Praveen, posted near Sector 45/46/49/50 chowk, was caught on camera accepting money instead of issuing a challan. The video, which surfaced during heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon, prompted DSP (traffic) Shriprakash to submit a report to SSP (traffic) Sumer Pratap Singh. Following this, Praveen was suspended, and an inquiry was ordered. DSP (traffic) Lakshya Pandey has been assigned to conduct the investigation. According to the police, the incident occurred when a vehicle bypassed the mandatory slip road at the intersection and proceeded straight through the chowk. The occupants of the vehicle later explained that waterlogging on the slip road due to the rain forced them to take an alternative route, and they usually follow traffic rules. Constable Praveen, in his defence, claimed that the motorists handed him Rs 500 for an online challan payment but left without collecting the receipt. He maintained that he intended to process the challan online using the money. The video also captured a conversation between the constable and the driver, in which the latter agreed to settle the matter quickly. When Praveen offered a reduced challan, the driver asked about the minimum amount. Upon learning it was Rs 500, he handed over the money and declined the receipt before driving away.

World University Games silver part of my prep for Worlds, says TN triple jumper Praveen Chithravel
CHENNAI: Triple jumper is in the middle of a wonderful season. The Tamil Nadu athlete equalled his own national record at the Federation Cup and then went on to bag silver at the Asian Athletics Championships. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He did not stop there as he clinched silver in the recently-concluded World University Games. While the 24-year-old Praveen played with caution at the University Worlds in Germany, it was enough to take him to the second spot. 'I wanted to compete in tournaments consistently in the build-up to the World Championships. I did not prepare separately for the University Games and did not strain myself. I knew that I would win a medal,' Praveen told TOI. What made the moment even more special for Praveen was that he secured the medal on his sister's birthday, a detail he mentioned on his bib. He dedicated the second-placed finish to his new-born nephew and said that he could not have given him a better gift. Prior to the University Worlds, Praveen had a brief training stint in Spain with Olympic medallists like Yulimar Rojas and Juan Miguel Echevarria. The spell in Spain helped him understand certain aspects which he could apply to his game. 'I could not stay relaxed when I was training with them as I always wanted to stay competitive. One important thing is that they come to train with a peaceful mind and do not take pressure while we are not like that. We sometimes put more pressure on ourselves and that goes against us. This is something I learnt personally,' Praveen added. In Spain, Praveen tried his hand at long jump and succeeded, recording his personal-best mark of 7.86m, one of the best jumps by an Indian this season. 'Many asked why I am competing in long jump when I am doing very well in triple jump. I do long jump as it helps me progress in triple jump. Personally, I love long jump, and I have the capacity to cross 8m and achieve a good jump. When I do triple jump, I am very cautious but when it comes to long jump, I do it without much stress. 'Unfortunately, I am not able to compete in three to four competitions in a year in long jump due to the hectic schedule. I am confident that I will spring a surprise in long jump in the future,' Praveen said.

Didn't bathe for months, quenched thirst eating ice: Kargil braveheart recalls
Shimla, "We did not bathe or shave for three months and on several occasions quenched our thirst by eating ice," recalled braveheart Naik Praveen on the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas Saturday. Didn't bathe for months, quenched thirst eating ice: Kargil braveheart recalls Praveen, from the 10 JAK Rifles, said that on the evening of May 4, 1999, there were sudden orders to move to the Drass sector with only rifles as the climb was steep. "After travelling all night, when we reached our destination the next morning, the village in Drass sector was empty and suddenly the Pakistani army started heavy bombing. Two soldiers from our group were martyred while two were injured," said Praveen, a resident of Sanjauli in Shimla, at a district-level function organized on the occasion. "Food used to arrive at night," he added. Pakistan had captured several hill tops including the Tiger Hill which is a prominent peak in Drass sector in Kargil, known for its strategic military importance as the peak offers a commanding view of the Srinagar-Leh highway. Retired Subedar Major Diwakar Dutt Sharma said the temperatures ranged from minus 30 to 40 degrees and the hills occupied by the enemy were very steep. It was not possible to climb in one day and we had to stop at intervals, he said. Then we attacked the enemy from behind when they had no clue, he added. "We lost many of our soldiers in this war. But the Indian Army hoisted the flag of victory as everyone decided to take revenge for the martyrdom of our comrades and defeated the enemy during the Kargil war," said Subedar Major Ram Lal Sharma who was posted at the G unit along with his cousin Diwakar Dutt Sharma. The Indian Army on July 26, 1999, announced the successful culmination of Operation Vijay, declaring victory over Pakistan after a nearly three-month-long war on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh. The day is observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap said that the ex-servicemen who were part of the Kargil war will share their experiences in schools so that the feeling of patriotism can be awakened in students. He said that about 20 per cent of the soldiers killed in the Kargil war were from Himachal Pradesh. Seven ex-servicemen from Shimla district were also honoured on the occasion.
