Preble County man accused of fatally hitting Middletown woman with machete

Jun. 25—A man was charged in a homicide investigation after he reportedly hit a Middletown woman with a machete while she was riding on a motorcycle in Preble County. Kenneth W. Brabant, 59, is facing two counts each of murder and felonious assault and one count each of tampering with evidence and attempt to commit an offense in Eaton Municipal Court. At 10:32 p.m. Sunday, Preble County sheriff's deputies and medics responded to the 3700 block of Aukerman Creek Road for a woman who was bleeding profusely from a severe cut on her leg. Deputies arrived and spoke to a man who said he was driving a motorcycle with the woman on Upper Sommes Road near Camden while heading to Eaton, according to the sheriff's office. While in the 7700 block, the motorcyclist saw a man running down a driveway something, according to an affidavit. He accelerated to pass the man and shortly after the woman reported she was bleeding badly. He drove to a friend's house on Aukerman Creek Road. The woman, 41-year-old Leigha L. Huff, was pronounced dead at the home. Deputies served a search warrant at an Upper Sommes Road property and recovered a machete believed to have been used in the assault. They interviewed Brabant before arresting him and booking him into the Preble County Jail. Brabant said he heard a motorcycle coming through the S-curves on the road and grabbed a machete before going to the street, according to an affidavit. He swung it at the motorcycle and then noticed blood on the machete. He reportedly tried to clean it and then hid it in the woods behind the home. Brabant said he didn't know who was on the motorcycle or how many people were on it, according to court records.

'There's 820 families just like my family right now, and I don't want anyone to have to go through, one more is too many,' Brian said. The family set up a tribute for Katherine at their home. They say she had a heart of gold. 'You never left our house hungry. If you did, it was your own fault,' Brian said. 'She didn't have any room in her heart for hate, it was love.' Brian had a message for all drivers. 'Stop driving distracted, get off your cell phones, turn off the radio,' Brian said. 'It's not that important. It'll be there when you get home.' The Dailey family is in contact with the Ohio State Highway Patrol about the investigation. Both the family and OSHP are urging drivers to look out for motorcyclists on the road.
