Chennai: IIT Madras Zanzibar campus held its first-ever degree distribution ceremony for MTech data science and artificial intelligence students recently. Students from diverse professional backgrounds completed a rigorous 190-credit curriculum. "The students trained in AI technology will join the global workforce. We are in the process of onboarding the third batch of MTech students," said professor Preeti Aghalayam, director of IIT Madras Zanzibar campus. Lela Mohamed Mussa, minister of education and vocational training, Zanzibar, presided over the degree distribution ceremony. Commending the day as historic for Zanzibar and Tanzania, she said, "The Zanzibar campus is a symbol of international cooperation." She also praised the Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi and IIT-M for establishing a world-class academic institution on the island. Professor Mohammed Sheikh, chair of the IIT-M Zanzibar Governing Council, urged graduates to serve as ambassadors for the India-Zanzibar partnership. The campus, which is situated on a 4.5 acre transit campus, will move to a 200-acre permanent campus soon. The campus is now home to 105 students, with 30% women. Students are from India, Nepal, mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar island, Kenya, and Zambia. The campus is also planning to launch more degrees in the coming years. This year, the campus launched a BS programme in chemical process engineering. The campus is also engaged in research partnerships, industry collaborations, STEM outreach for schools, and community skilling initiatives, reflecting IIT Madras' vision of inclusive and globally connected education.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras Zanzibar has launched a new undergraduate programme in chemical process engineering from this academic year. The application for the programme, which is open to candidates of all nationalities, will close on July 6. The four-year, full-time programme will offer a curriculum blending core chemical engineering fundamentals with practical laboratory work, industry-aligned projects and electives to encourage interdisciplinary learning. The Zanzibar campus of IIT Madras commenced in October 2023 and programmes are open to all, including Indians. Preeti Aghalayam, director-in-charge of Zanzibar campus, IIT Madras, said as a chemical engineer it was a pleasure to bring the programme to the institute. 'We believe that it will be a very meaningful step forward for the campus,' she said. The campus currently offers a 4-year BS degree in data science and AI and a 2-year M Tech in DS and AI and an M Tech in Ocean Structures. Candidates who have qualified in class 12 or equivalent, with physics, chemistry and mathematics as mandatory subjects, may apply. Candidates will undergo a screening test on July 13 at Chennai, Zanzibar and other locations. Online interviews will be held from July 25 to 31. Classes will commence on Oct 6. The course will have a strong core in chemical process engineering with concentrations in data science, energy and sustainability. The four-year full-time undergraduate degree programme in the Zanzibar campus is open to candidates of all nationalities, including Indians. "The programme offers a comprehensive curriculum blending core chemical engineering fundamentals with practical laboratory work, industry-aligned projects and electives that encourage interdisciplinary learning," a senior official said. The last date to apply is July 6. "It would be delivered by a distinguished faculty team from IIT Madras, IITM Zanzibar, and partner institutions, ensuring rigorous academic standards and global relevance," the official added. Preeti Aghalayam, Director-in-charge, Zanzibar campus, IIT Madras, said, "As a Chemical Engineer myself, it is such a pleasure that we are bringing this programme to IITM Zanzibar. We believe that it will be a very meaningful step forward for the campus."
