After its release, the film became a hot topic and garnered controversy for its bold scenes, including the kissing scene. Nevertheless, this did not hinder its success; it became one of the biggest blockbusters of that year, propelling Mandakini to overnight stardom. When Padmini Kolhapure Talked About Rejecting Ram Teri Ganga Maili During a session of Rajshri Unplugged, Padmini Kolhapure reflected on her decision to reject the film. She explained, 'When Raj uncle told me about the film and mentioned the kissing scene, I had never done anything like that before, so I didn't want to participate in it. I had no issue working with Rajiv Kapoor, but I was uncomfortable with kissing on screen. That's why I chose to decline the offer.' Padmini had also mentioned that 45 days of shooting of 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili' had been completed, even after Raj Kapoor wanted to remove Mandakini and cast her.

Rajiv Kapoor, the youngest son of legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, unfortunately didn't manage to make as big an impact in Indian cinema as his father or his illustrious brothers. Yet, he remains widely remembered and loved for his role in Ram Teri Ganga Maili, a film directed by his father that went on to become a massive blockbuster. In a old interview with Lehren Retro, Rajiv candidly spoke about how surprised he was when his father chose him as the lead actor in the film. He recalled, 'I had only prayed that I get the chance to become Raj Kapoor sahab's assistant. I was his son, of course, but he was also my guru, and I was his student. I got the opportunity when he started Prem Rog and asked me to assist him. That was a big moment for me because I was getting a chance to learn from an absolute legend.' Rajiv Kapoor further revealed that his father had always wanted him to be independent and make a mark on his own. 'He always wanted me to work as an actor for the first time on my own… to do something independently like he had done. He believed, 'Why should I start something for you… you do it yourself.''
