Donald Trump includes himself in Club World Cup trophy celebration with Chelsea
Cole Palmer has produced a scintillating first-half masterclass as Chelsea demolished a flat Paris St Germain 3-0 to win a one-sided Club World Cup final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Strangely though, it was US President Donald Trump who took centre stage during the trophy presentation. The 79-year-old put medals around the players' necks and handed trophy over to the EPL club, at which point it seemed a natural time for him to exit stage left — literally. Palmer appeared to say something in Trump's direction as FIFA boss Giovanni Infantino attempted to lead the President away from the stage. But Trump stayed, including himself in the iconic trophy lift, which set social media alight. 'Donald Trump has celebrated more international trophies than Arsenal,' one person quipped. 'Reece James asking Donald Trump 'are you gonna leave' and Trump just not moving for the trophy lift is mental,' another said. 'This is a simulation we are living in we now have Chelsea trophy lift pics with Donald Trump in the middle celebrating with the team,' an incredulous third joked. Back on the field, Palmer scored twice and provided an assist for Joao Pedro in a devastating display in the revamped tournament's decider that left the European and French champions, who finished with 10 men, shell-shocked. Chelsea, who won the 2021 Club World Cup in its previous format, struck first in the 22nd minute when PSG fullback Nuno Mendes gifted possession to Malo Gusto. While his initial effort was blocked by Mendes, Gusto collected the rebound and found Palmer unmarked in the middle and the midfielder made no mistake, slotting a tidy finish just inside the left post. Palmer doubled the lead after the 30th-minute cooling break with a goal of sublime quality. Latching onto a precise through ball from Levi Colwill, he cut inside before faking a pass to dummy a defender and firing into the bottom-left corner. Palmer then turned provider, running up the channel before finding Joao Pedro, who took the ball in his stride and beat the offside trap before chipping his finish beautifully over keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. PSG's misery was completed when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair in the 83rd minute, as PSG's players grew in frustration as the match progressed. The encounter turned into an ill-tempered match at the end, with players going at each other after the final whistle, but the flare-ups quickly dissipated as Chelsea's players went to celebrate with their fans. 'It's a great feeling. Even better because everyone doubted us before the game, we knew that. To put a fight on like we did, it's good,' Palmer told DAZN. 'The gaffer put a great gameplan out. He knew where the space was going to be. He tried to free me up as much as possible and I just had to repay him and score some goals.' Chelsea arrived in the US after winning Europe's third-tier Conference League and on the back of a domestic campaign in which they just managed a top-four Premier League finish. Prior to the match, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said he was expecting a 'game of chess' against PSG coach Luis Enrique, but it was a quick checkmate for the Italian who gave a tactical masterclass. Maresca's team employed a relentless high press and emulated the tactics used by Brazilian outfit Botafogo, who had beaten PSG 1-0 in the group stage and were the only team to score against Luis Enrique's side in the previous eight games. Their press caused PSG all sorts of trouble and when Maresca's side couldn't regain possession, they sat deep, frustrating the European champions, who were unable to play their usual game. The direct and pacey football we had become used to seeing from PSG was Chelsea's game on Sunday, with Palmer, Gusto and Joao Pedro picking apart the PSG defence, especially on the left side. Other than an early golden opportunity for PSG's Desire Doue that was wasted, the first half was all Chelsea's and, after they opened their three-goal lead, the French side could never recover.

At Least 47 People Injured After Car Plows Into Crowd at Liverpool Parade
At least 47 people, including four children, were injured after a car plowed into a crowd during a victory parade for Liverpool's Premier League soccer title on Monday, according to police. Merseyside Police Police arrested a male suspect after the car stopped at the scene. Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the suspect is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. 'Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision and it is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media,' Sims said at a Dave Kitchin of North West Ambulance Service said that 27 people were hospitalized with injuries, while 20 others were treated at the scene. Among them were four children, one of whom sustained serious injuries. A cyclist paramedic was struck by the vehicle but was not injured. Kitchin said that some patients self-presented at local hospitals following the 'significant incident.' Related Stories 11/4/2024 1/5/2025 Nick Searle, chief fire officer at the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, said that four people were trapped under the vehicle and have since been rescued. 'Our crews rapidly lifted the vehicle, removed people from beneath and passed them to our ambulance colleagues,' Searle told reporters, adding that fire crews will maintain a presence in the area in the coming days. Footage shared on social media showed a gray minivan surrounded by people and police on the parade route, before it ploughed into the crowd, pushing people along the street before it came to a stop, surrounded by outraged fans. Harry Rashid, who joined the parade with his wife and two children, told The Associated Press that the car was moving 'extremely fast.' 'Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car,' Rashid said. Once the car stopped, the crowd surged toward it and began smashing the windows, he said. 'But then he put his foot down again and just plowed through the rest of them, he just kept going,' he stated. 'It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.' Another witness, Peter Jones, told the news outlet that the vehicle passed by him as people chased after it to try to stop it. 'He then drove into people, police, and medics ran past us, and people were being treated on the side of the road,' Jones said. Police are still investigating the circumstances that led to the collision. Sims has urged people to refrain from sharing 'distressing footage' from the incident. 'What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it,' Sims said. 'The incident is not currently being treated as terrorism.' British Prime Minister Keir Starmer 'The scenes in Liverpool are appalling—my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,' Starmer said. Liverpool fans had gathered to celebrate the team's winning the Premier League this season for a record-tying 20th top-flight title. In a 'Once again, our hearts go out to all of those affected,' Robinson said. 'Liverpool is a city that has a proud history of coming together and supporting each other during challenging times. I've no doubt that will again be the case over the coming days and weeks.' The team said in a

Man Utd and Tottenham fans brawl in streets of Spain with punches and objects thrown
A brawl broke out on the streets of Spain between Manchester United and Tottenham fans on the eve of the Europa League final, with punches and objects thrown. Footage of a violent clash between fans in Spain, ahead of the Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham on Wednesday night, has been widely shared on social media. The two Premier Leagu e teams are set to face off at Athletic Bilbao's home ground, with both hoping to redeem their disappointing domestic seasons. A spot in next season's Champions League is also up for grabs, and thousands of supporters from both clubs have travelled to Spain for the crucial match. However, alongside the friendly banter in Bilbao, disturbing footage of a brawl in nearby San Sebastian, where fans were seen throwing punches and objects at each other, has emerged. The fight, which took place on the eve of the final, was widely circulated on X. The Sun reports that local authorities were alerted to the disturbance around 9.20pm after violent behaviour was spotted on Fermín Calbetón Street. Eyewitnesses allege that the situation escalated when two rival groups of fans began trading insults. Chaos ensued as fans started throwing punches and objects, including a wheelie bin and drinks, reports the Mirror. One fan even overturned a table to use as a weapon before order was restored by the police. The report further states that no arrests were made, although police maintained a presence in the area. An ambulance was reportedly on standby, with 'several people' receiving treatment at the scene, but no one required hospitalisation. Tens of thousands of Brits have journeyed to Spain to back their teams, despite sky-high flight costs and a scarcity of available lodgings in the Basque region. The vast majority have conducted themselves well with no significant disturbances prior to the incident in San Sebastian. It's estimated that thousands of fans have made the trip without tickets for both team's second last match of the season. Supporters of both Manchester United and Spurs have witnessed their respective sides suffer disastrous campaigns in the Premier League, where they currently sit 16th and 17th respectively in the table having lost a combined total of 39 matches. The victor of Wednesday night's match could become the lowest-ranked team to ever clinch a European trophy, with West Ham - who finished 14th the year they secured the Europa Conference League - currently holding that record.

Southampton bag point to avoid ‘worst team in Premier League history' tag
Pep Guardiola has an extremely fond memory of St Mary's Stadium. It was here on the final day of the 2017-18 season that he watched Gabriel Jesus score a stoppage-time winner to ensure Manchester City finished as the Premier League champions with a record 100-point haul. It was a number at the opposite end of the spectrum that provided a prominent sub-plot this time. Southampton kicked off on 11 points, level with the all-time lowest haul by a team in the competition – that collected with apologies by Derby in 2007-08. Could Southampton, who had suffered so much, get something to lift them clear of the unwanted association? Related: Welbeck spot on to reach goal milestone as Brighton solve equation at Wolves The chances felt slim beforehand, particularly with Erling Haaland back in the City lineup after a six-week ankle injury lay-off. But by the end, the answer was a stirring yes. After a performance of discipline and burgeoning resilience, the Southampton interim manager, Simon Rusk, had held Guardiola's side to a scoreless draw and the ground was rocking. 'Sorry if we got your hopes up, Derby,' the Southampton X account posted, even if having 12 points from 36 games is surely not so worthy of banter. City might have had one eye on next Saturday's FA Cup final against Crystal Palace, but they still wanted a win to pull them level on points with second-placed Arsenal, albeit with an inferior goal difference before the London club's trip to Liverpool on Sunday. They wanted to win a fifth league game in succession for the first time this season. And they wanted a result to allow them to breathe a little more easily in the push for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification. It did not happen and the last target is not yet certain, Guardiola admitting afterwards that he expected it to go down to City's final game at Fulham. His team were dreadfully flat in the first half and they stirred too late, the closest they came during a flurry towards the end being a blast by the substitute, Omar Marmoush, that came back off the crossbar. City dominated the shot count 26-2, although only four of them were on target, and their frustration was summed up by the centre-half, Rúben Dias, who essentially accused Southampton of being anti-football. Rusk's 5-4-1 system certainly left little to the imagination of his players; he knew that going toe-to-toe with City was not an option. And if Guardiola's team had rediscovered a few of the old certainties in recent weeks, they were unable to do anything in the first half. City gorged themselves on possession and territory, working their patterns, coming this way and then that. Repeat and repeat. There was no tempo, and it was hard to remember anyone in sky blue beating his man before the interval. Very little happened, apart from Kevin De Bruyne popping one free-kick over the crossbar and another into the wall. ● Manchester City failed to defeat a side starting the day bottom of the table in the Premier League for the first time since November 2015 (0-0 vs Aston Villa), with that also the last time they were unable to score against such opponents. ● Manchester City have failed to score in four of their last 11 Premier League games, as many blanks as in their previous 55 in the competition. Indeed, City have failed to score in six Premier League games this season – their most in a single top-flight campaign since 2015-16 (8). ● Southampton have kept a clean sheet in the Premier League for the first time since December last year against Fulham, ending a run of 18 games without a single shutout in the competition. ● Manchester City had 26 shots in this match, which is their most in a Premier League game without scoring since July 2020 – also 26 and against Southampton at St Mary's. Lesley Ugochukwu, on a yellow card for a foul on Mateo Kovacic, diced with disaster when he stopped City from taking a quick free-kick just before half-time. He could have been sent off. Perhaps the referee, Tim Robinson, was lulled by the apathy. There have probably been duller halves of football this season. It was just difficult to say which ones. There was more life after the break, the home fans incensed when Robinson penalised Tyler Dibling for a foul on Josko Gvardiol when it appeared that the Southampton winger had got past his marker. There would later be a flare-up between Jan Bednarek and Haaland. Guardiola introduced Jérémy Doku for James McAtee at the start of the second half and the winger made a difference. It was his cutback that offered Bernardo Silva a chance, Jack Stephens just about clearing the City player's shot up and over his own crossbar. Doku nearly fed Haaland on a City counter. And it was a genuine counter because Southampton were able to make a few forays upfield. Related: Rúben Dias rips into Southampton's negative tactics but Guardiola doesn't agree City turned the screw in the closing stages and the chances started to come. Manuel Akanji had a header pushed out by Aaron Ramsdale while Haaland put a square ball just behind the onrushing substitute, Nico O'Reilly. Another replacement, Savinho, could not get a Haaland header to sit down for him while Dias extended Ramsdale. Southampton put their bodies on the line. Their fans increasingly lived on the end of their nerves. It felt as though City were lining up the decisive blow but when Marmoush shot against the crossbar at the beginning of stoppage time that would be that for them. In the sixth of the seven additional minutes, yet another replacement, Cameron Archer, threatened the heist at the other end. Ederson had his angles covered but it did nothing to douse the Southampton celebrations.
