Finland's Premix, LYB & Maillefer partner for PP based cable solution
Premix, LyondellBasell (LYB) and Maillefer have joined forces to deliver a technically advanced and recyclable power cable system, combining high-performance polypropylene materials, state-of-the-art compounding and leading cable manufacturing technology. Together, the three companies offer a robust, compatible PP-based solution for MV and HV cable insulation and semiconductive screens, providing an alternative to traditional XLPE systems. Premix, LyondellBasell, and Maillefer have teamed up to offer a recyclable, PP-based power cable system for MV and HV applications. The solution combines Premix's conductive PP, LYB's PP insulation, and Maillefer's advanced extrusion tech. It delivers fast processing, stable performance, and circular economy benefits, providing an alternative to XLPE cables. A synergy of expertise: Materials, compounding and cable manufacturing Premix contributes its expertise in conductive polymers with PRE-ELEC PP18220, a semiconductive PP compound tailored for MV and HV cable screens. It delivers excellent carbon black dispersion, stable conductivity and a flexural modulus aligned with PP insulation — ensuring compatibility and reliable performance. LYB supports the solution with Catalloy Hifax CA 7910A, a polypropylene insulation material (PP-TPO) that provides outstanding mechanical and thermal properties. Its consistency and ease of processing make it well suited for advanced cable insulation. Premix opens new manufacturing facility in North Carolina
Premix Group, an electrically conductive plastics manufacturer, has inaugurated its new manufacturing facility in Apple Creek, North Carolina, US. The development of the facility was backed by a $79m investment from the US Department of Health and Human Services. It is expected to strengthen the domestic supply chain for crucial diagnostics and other high-impact applications. The facility will utilise US-sourced raw materials to produce advanced polyethylene- (PE) and polypropylene (PP)-based compounds and concentrates. These materials are seen as key for extrusion and injection moulding applications, enabling accurate liquid level detection and providing protection against uncontrolled electrostatic discharges. Such features are essential in diagnostics, chemicals, electronics, industrial packaging, and other high-performance applications. The Apple Creek plant will offer the US market locally manufactured products with reduced lead times, a smaller carbon footprint, and better supply chain security. Premix Group CEO Jaakko Aho said: "These materials enable high-precision liquid level sensing in diagnostic testing, and safer handling, transport, and storage by protecting against uncontrolled electrostatic discharges (ESD) - a critical requirement in electronics, industrial packaging, diagnostics, and other high-performance applications.
