Chandigarh chief secretary orders quick fix to power outages

Chief secretary Rajeev Verma conducted a review meeting of Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) on Tuesday following rising public complaints about frequent unscheduled power cuts across the city. The meeting, attended by engineering secretary Prerna Puri, chief engineer CB Ojha and senior CPDL officials, focused on improving the power situation since CPDL took over distribution responsibilities on February 1 this year. During the meeting, Verma expressed serious concerns about the deteriorating power supply quality, particularly highlighting issues of unscheduled outages and delayed response times that have inconvenienced residents. CPDL officials presented a detailed status report outlining both ongoing corrective measures and future plans to stabilise the power supply. Officials informed that CPDL has initiated grid infrastructure strengthening through scheduled maintenance at all substations, especially crucial ahead of peak summer demand. To address immediate fault resolution, CPDL has outsourced specialised Fault Response Teams (FRTs) to ensure quicker complaint redressal. On the consumer service front, CPDL has launched a 24x7 call centre, a dedicated WhatsApp helpline, and now provides both electricity meters and power cables free of cost — items that consumers previously had to purchase themselves. The new system ensures meter installations within 72 hours of application. The presentation also revealed significant challenges, including aging infrastructure with frequent equipment failures identified during post-privatisation surveys and acute staff shortages currently being managed through outsourced manpower. Looking ahead, CPDL is developing a robust cybersecurity framework and an 'islanding network' to maintain uninterrupted power supply to critical services like hospitals during grid failures. The CPDL is also actively implementing the PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana to promote solar energy adoption. The chief secretary was also apprised of the ongoing rollout of the PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG-MBY), along with future projects aimed at expanding and modernising Chandigarh's power delivery network. The chief secretary has directed officials to ensure that power disruption is minimalised and response time be improved.

Every principal, teacher will be held responsible for students who didn't perform well: Chandigarh Education Secy

A COMPREHENSIVE meeting with all principals will be held to review the Class X and Class XII board exam results, Education Secretary, Chandigarh Administration, said. Teachers with the highest number of students in the compartment or failed category will be required to attend the meeting and present an explanation. In a meeting on Friday, Prerna Puri, Education Secretary, Chandigarh Administration, highlighted the robust infrastructure and the presence of a well-qualified teaching community in government schools. In light of these strengths, she pointed out, there should be no reason for students to fail or be placed in the compartment category in the board exam results. 'Every principal and teacher will be held accountable for lapses, and at the same time, due credit will be given to teachers and principals whose students excel and perform well,' Puri said in a statement. The Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs) of teachers will now include evaluations of student performance for accountability. Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) will be held on May 17 for parents of students who have a compartment in the board exams. Subject teachers will be present in these meetings to discuss the challenges of the students and discuss and plan the way forward with parents. Principals and teachers will review the results and begin extra classes for students to ensure that every compartment student clears the re-exams. The District Officer (DO) will prepare a detailed analysis of Class X and Class XII results, presenting the details of students who have passed, failed and have got a compartment, and these details will be categorised school-wise, area-wise, and subject-wise, to identify the gaps. It was also noted in the statement that despite clear instructions, not many teachers have yet adopted an adult learner, as this initiative is 'mandatory and compulsory'. Teachers who have adopted at least one adult learner were appreciated. It was further instructed in the meeting that teachers teaching only morning sessions must adopt at least one adult learner. Teachers posted in central sectors of the city will adopt an adult learner, and failure to adopt will lead to a recommendation for transfer of the teacher to peripheral area schools and assignment to teach evening sessions. Also, transfer requests will not be considered from teachers who have not adopted an adult learner, and those who do not adopt an adult learner will have a negative reflection in the ACR starting this year.

Chandigarh embarks on ‘Mission 100' to improve govt schools' result in board exams

Following Chandigarh's poorer show in comparison to the rest of the region in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 and 12 exams, the UT education department has launched 'Mission 100' to improve the academic performance of students enrolled in government schools after analysing the results. The main objective of the mission is to achieve 100% performance in various academic and administrative targets across government schools. Key objectives include aiming for 100% student attendance, 100% pass result and teacher accountability and training. The focus areas include improving academic performance percentages in board classes, providing remedial support to underperforming students, and regularly monitoring, evaluating and tracking students' academic progress. The department will also hold monthly reviews and school performance analysis using a digital platform. Teachers will have to take accountability of the students' performances. To increase parental engagement, the department also aims to strengthen school management committees (SMCs). A parent-teacher meeting to review the Class 10 and 12 board results of students who got placed in the compartment category will also be organised. All schools will ensure that extra classes are held. The district education officer will prepare an analysis of Class 10 and 12 board results, highlighting the students who have passed, got a compartment, and failed. This detailed report will include the demography, subject constraint and other shortcomings, if any, at the school level. Such constraints shall be removed on priority. Prerna Puri, UT education secretary, will visit a government school each Friday, meet 10 principals on midday meal lunch, and monitor educational practices and teaching methodologies. The first meeting was held at Government Model High School, Sector 12, on Friday. Speaking at the meeting, Puri said there is no question as to why students of government schools should fail or have a compartment in the board exam results. She added that the principals and teachers will have to be held accountable for any lapses leading to students' failure in the board exams. Due credit will be given to those whose students are high achievers. Puri added that a meeting with all the principals will be held shortly to review the results of Class 10 and 12 board exams. The teachers who have maximum students under the compartment category will be required to explain their position. The UT education secretary has directed the department to constitute subject-wise committees under the principals who have specialised in a subject to prepare comprehensive and special learning material for the board classes by Monday. This material will be ready before the end of the summer vacations so that it can be distributed to the children when they come for their classes. The department will also felicitate toppers and schools who performed well.
