Focus will be on people-friendly policing, crime control, cyber security, says DGP

1 2 3 4 Jaipur: Ending weeks of speculation and interim leadership in state police, the Rajasthan govt Thursday appointed senior IPS officer Rajeev Kumar Sharma as the new Director General of Police (DGP). The 1990-batch officer of Rajasthan cadre assumed charge in the evening and was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at the police headquarters here. Sharma's appointment follows his premature repatriation from central deputation, where he served as the Director General of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) in New Delhi. His return fills the leadership void created after former DGP UR Sahoo was appointed Rajasthan Public Service Commission chairperson on June 10 and the brief interim charge of the state police force held by DG (ACB) Ravi Prakash Meharda, who retired on June 30. In a formal order, the Department of Personnel announced that Sharma will serve as the head of state police for a period of two years, irrespective of his age of superannuation or until further orders, whichever is earlier. He has also been placed in the apex pay scale (Level 17) with a fixed monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh. Speaking the media shortly after taking charge, Sharma expressed gratitude to the state leadership, saying, "I thank the Chief Minister and the state govt for the trust they have placed in me." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Emphasising his commitment to public service, he said, "I will fulfil this opportunity to serve the people with utmost dedication and sincerity." He also stressed the importance of modern policing and tackling new-age crimes. "There will be effective efforts to control the growing menace of cybercrime," he said. He added, "We will strive to make Rajasthan a model state in the country in terms of policing." Sharma brings with him a diverse career spanning over three decades. His experience at the field level includes postings as SP in Jodhpur, Jhalawar, Dausa, Rajsamand, Bharatpur and Jaipur North. Rajeev Kumar Sharma takes charge as Rajasthan DGP in Jaipur

Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rajeev Kumar Sharma took charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Rajasthan in Jaipur on Thursday (July 3, 2025), succeeding former DGP Utkal Ranjan Sahoo, who took voluntary retirement after being appointed chairman of the State Public Service Commission. Anti-Corruption Bureau's (ACB) DG Ravi Prakash Meharda, who was given additional charge of the State DGP after Mr. Sahoo's exit, retired on June 30. Mr. Sharma was earlier on the Central deputation, serving as Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development, New Delhi. Mr. Sharma, an IPS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, arrived at the Police Headquarters in Jaipur on Thursday (July 3, 2025) after being relieved by the Centre following a formal request sent by the State government earlier this week. The Department of Personnel has issued an order for his appointment for a period of two years. The appointment was made on the basis of a recommendation made by the empanelment committee, which was formed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The State government had submitted a panel of seven DGP-rank IPS officers, in the order of seniority, for consideration by the UPSC. Mr. Sharma said after assuming office that he would concentrate on taking forward the 'glorious traditions' of Rajasthan police and make Rajasthan a model State in policing for the entire country. 'The police team of the State will work with promptness, sensitivity and collaboration to ensure safety and security for all. Every police station will be people-friendly,' he said. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Mathura, Mr. Sharma earlier held several key positions in Rajasthan, including the ACB DG, State Disaster Response Force DG and Director of the Rajasthan Police Academy. He also served as Superintendent of Police in several districts. He was awarded the President's Police Medal in 2014.

Centre clears decks toappoint Rajeev KumarSharma as state DGP

Jaipur: The Union home ministry on Wednesday approved the premature repatriation of senior IPS officer Rajeev Kumar Sharma to his home cadre, clearing the deck for his appointment as the next director general of police (DGP) of Rajasthan. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Though a formal Rajasthan govt order announcing his appointment was awaited at the time of going to the press, Sharma is expected to arrive in Jaipur on Thursday and assume charge once his appointment is notified. Sharma's repatriation from Delhi, where he served as director general, Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), is expected to put an end to a three-week wait for a new police chief after UR Sahoo demitted office on June 10. While DG (ACB) Ravi Prakash Meharda was given additional charge as DGP, he also retired on June 30. A 1990-batch officer, Sharma, a native of Mathura, is among the state's most experienced officers. He has been a recipient of the President's Police Medal and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, and is known in policing circles for his clean image, legal acumen, and administrative foresight. Beginning his police career as Jodhpur (Central) ASP in 1992, Sharma went on to serve as SP in Bharatpur, Jaipur (North), Jhalawar, Dausa, and Rajsamand. He was also posted as IG in Bikaner and Bharatpur ranges. His diverse range of assignments include a posting in Bosnia, roles in CBI in Jaipur and Delhi, including in its special unit. In Rajasthan, he served as director general of anti-corruption bureau (ACB), the Rajasthan Police Academy, apart from leading key branches such as administration, law & order, RAC, and personnel. Once he joins office, Sharma's first task will likely be to restore order in the police force, grappling with top level vacancies and an overdue IPS reshuffle, stalled amid administrative indecision for over six months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now For instance, the state has been without a permanent DG, cyber crime, since Hemant Priyadarshy retired on May 31. Similarly, the post of DG and commandant general, Home Guards, has remained vacant since Rajesh Nirwan's central deputation and appointment to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in Delhi on Feb 12. While the 1994-batch IPS officer Malini Agarwal was given additional charge of Home Guards on Feb 15, no full-time replacement has been named though Rajasthan has eight DG rank officers, two on central deputation, and the remaining — DGP designate Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Sanjay Agarwal, Govind Gupta, Anil Paliwal, Anand Srivastava, Ashok Rathore and Malini Agarwal — posted at the Police Headquarters. The last major IPS reshuffle, meanwhile, was done on Sept 22, 2024, with only a handful of transfers or awaiting posting orders (APO) notifications issued since. As a result, dozens of IPS officers, including Anand Sharma (SP, Jaipur Rural), Bhuvan Bhushan Yadav (SP, Sikar), Gaurav Yadav (SP, Sriganganagar), and Rajan Dushyant (SP, Kotputli-Behror) — promoted to DIG rank on Dec 31, 2024 — still serving in their earlier SP roles. A senior official told TOI, "Although transfers should ideally be timely, it has not affected ground-level policing due to the established hierarchy." However, prolonged vacancies at the top raise concerns about the force's ability to address emerging challenges effectively.

Delhi Police chief Sanjay Arora to retire on July 31

A month and a half before Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora's retirement, the Delhi government's Home Department has issued a notification informing that the Commissioner will be leaving office on July 31, it is learnt. Arora, who is a 1988-batch IPS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, took charge of the Police Commissioner's office in August 2022. With Arora's retirement confirmed, police sources said that a call on his successor will be taken later. Director General of Prisons Satish Golcha (1992-batch IPS AGMUT cadre) and CISF Special Director General Praveen Ranjan (1993-batch IPS AGMUT cadre) are among the other senior officers in the force. However, sources have pointed out that the last two Police Commissioners, including Arora, have not been from the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre. The previous commissioner, Rakesh Asthana, was from the Gujarat cadre. Police Commissioner Arora's career has spanned over four decades. During his time in the Tamil Nadu Police, he was the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the Special Task Force and carried out operations against forest brigand Veerappan in the sandalwood forests of the state. In 2004, the sandalwood smuggler was killed in a shootout by Arora's team, which was led by famed IPS officer K Vijay Kumar. Arora would earn the CM's Gallantry Medal for Bravery and Heroic Action for his role. His work in Tamil Nadu would also earn him a Police Medal for meritorious service in 2004. Ten years later, he would be awarded the President's Police Medal for distinguished service. He was also part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo, for which he earned a UN Peacekeeping medal. He went on to serve as the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal from 2021 to 2022.
