UAE leaders offer condolences on passing of Saudi prince
UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has extended his condolences to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, on the passing of Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al Saud. Known to many as Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince', Prince Alwaleed passed away after spending 20 years in a coma following a car accident in 2005. Born in April 1990, he was the eldest son of Prince Khalid bin Talal Al Saud and the nephew of billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, also offered their condolences. Furthermore, condolences were expressed by the rulers of Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Qaiwain and Ras Al Khaimah. Prince Alwaleed was remembered across the Arab world as a symbol of patience, hope and enduring faith.

UAE leaders extend condolences to Saudi Arabia over death of ‘Sleeping Prince'
UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has offered his condolences to the Saudi Arabia following the passing of Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, known to many as the 'Sleeping Prince.' The message was sent to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, WAM reported. Two other top UAE leaders, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, also sent their messages of sympathy to the Saudi King. Their messages followed the death of Prince Al Waleed, who had been in a coma for nearly 20 years. His father, Prince Khaled, confirmed his passing in a social media post on July 19. He was 36 years old. At age 15, he was involved in a car accident in London in 2005 that left him with severe brain injuries and internal bleeding. He was eventually moved to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained on life support and under close medical care for the next two decades.

US ambassador visits Liwa Date Festival

During her visit to the festival, Ambassador Strong expressed her deep admiration for the distinguished event, which offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore dates and the diverse products derived from the palm tree. She noted that the experience provided her with valuable insight into traditional crafts and local cuisine. Strong also commended the rich educational content presented by the organisers and their tremendous efforts in hosting such diverse heritage festivals. These events, she emphasised, offer an authentic window into the UAE's vibrant cultural heritage, blending the past with the present. As part of her tour, the US Ambassador viewed several pavilions in the date and fruit beauty competitions. The 2025 Liwa Date Festival, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, has welcomed 50,225 visitors during its first five days. The 21st edition of the festival, organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, continues until 27th July in Liwa City, Al Dhafra Region. The Liwa Date Festival is one of the UAE's most significant platforms celebrating palm heritage and traditional agriculture. It is an annual event eagerly awaited by farmers and the wider community due to its vital support for the agricultural sector and food security. The festival features 24 competitions with a total of 308 prizes valued at Dhs8.735 million, in addition to stage competitions designed for visitors. The event reflects Abu Dhabi's commitment to preserving and transmitting heritage across generations while celebrating the date harvest season and the palm tree, a deeply rooted cultural and social symbol in Emirati heritage. The festival also attracts visitors and tourists from across the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council, offering a traditional and interactive atmosphere that supports farmers and provides engaging experiences for families and attendees.
