National Press Club: Update on Appeal In Case of Journalist Dong Yuyu
WASHINGTON, July 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Following is an update on the case of Chinese Journalist Dong Yuyu, provided by his family. 'After being sentenced to seven years in prison for espionage at the trial level in November, Dong has appealed his wrongful verdict to the Beijing High Court. The Beijing High Court heard his appeal on March 31, with a deadline for a decision in early May. In early May, however, the Court asked the procuratorate for additional evidence in Dong's case. Chinese law gives the procuratorate one month to complete this step. However, it only took one week for the procuratorate to respond to the court with no additional evidence. This move allowed the Beijing High Court four additional months to render a decision on appeal. Now the deadline is September 13, though the Beijing High Court can find ways to extend it. All these procedures clearly show that the case against Dong is completely meritless. If it had merit, then the Beijing High Court would have had no trouble rendering a decision upholding his conviction, just like the vast majority of appeals cases in China. It is also clear that the case is being decided not according to the law, but rather based on politics. This is why we urge all stakeholders involved to keep advocating for Dong. We urge press organizations throughout the world to keep demanding Dong's immediate release. We urge the Japanese government to directly raise the case with the Chinese government as their diplomats were directly and wrongly accused of espionage in this case as well. In vigorously defending Japanese integrity, they help ensure the future safety of their own diplomats. Finally, we urge the United States government to keep pressing China for Dong's immediate release and to include his case in the human rights portfolio accompanying the much anticipated bilateral later this year. Advisory: Press Freedom Center to Host Panel on Investigative Journalism and the Fight to Save the Amazon
WASHINGTON, June 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Press Freedom Center at the National Press Club will be hosting an upcoming event focused on the book How to Save the Amazon: A Journalist's Fatal Quest for Answers. The discussion will explore the intersection of investigative journalism, environmental justice, and press freedom, highlighting the extraordinary and often perilous work of journalists reporting from the frontlines of ecological crises. How to Save the Amazon recounts the story of journalist Dom Phillips and his research partner Bruno Pereira, who were killed in 2022 while documenting the threats to the Amazon and its protectors. At the time of their deaths, the book was unfinished, but a team of journalists and friends — including Dom's wife, Alessandra Sampaio — worked together to complete the volume. Three years later, it is a finished product that sheds light on the critical role of journalism in exposing environmental destruction and government inaction. It also extensively covers the relationship between the Amazon and indigenous populations of Brazil and sheds light on how much can be learned about this region of the world from the people who have lived in it and protected it. The panel will take place on Wednesday, June 11, at 6:00pm at the National Press Club. It will feature Sampaio, The Intercept's Andrew Fishman, and others, who will discuss the journey to finish the book, the impact it has had so far, and the ongoing threats faced by reporters and other leaders working to protect the Amazon. To reserve your spot, please RSVP at this link. Copies of the book are available for purchase with a ticket online and will also be available for purchase at the event as well. Press Freedom Center at National Press Club Petitions UN Working Group for Arbitrary Detention on Behalf of RFE/RL Reporter Nika Novak Held in Siberia
WASHINGTON, May 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Following is a statement from Mike Balsamo, president of the National Press Club, on an important legal action taken by the Club's Press Freedom Center in the case of Nika Novak, a reporter for Radio Free Europe currently being held in jail in Siberia: 'Today, on World Press Freedom Day, we are announcing that the Press Freedom Center at the National Press Club, with the support of its pro bono attorneys at Covington & Burling LLP, have submitted a petition with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on behalf of Nika Novak calling for her immediate release. Miss Novak was the first person arrested under Russia's revised Article 275.1, which has led to a heightened crackdown on speech and dissent in Russia, particularly against journalists reporting on the war with Ukraine. Our partners at Covington did an outstanding job preparing this petition and received significant help from interested parties along the way. Miss Novak was sleeping at her mother's home in the early morning hours of December 25, 2023, when she was arrested without warrant. We again ask that Miss Novak be released immediately and without conditions. She is a journalist, and journalism is not a crime. The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention comprises five independent experts appointed by the Human Rights Council. Once they have agreed to accept a petition, it may take six weeks or more before they announce a finding. That process is now underway. We look forward to a positive outcome. We are grateful to Covington & Burling for their efforts in drafting the petition, which will show the world that Miss Novak's detention is arbitrary and make a compelling case for her release.' Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world's leading professional organization for journalists. With more than 2,500 members the Club, through its Press Freedom Center, is a leading voice for a free press in the U.S. and worldwide.
