TASTE TEST: Cake and Coffee by Cheesecake Creations
If my eight-year-old niece was asked to design a cake shop this would be it - but with added flamingos. It's definitely the type of shop that brings a smile to people's faces and brightens up the High Street - even one as varied and vibrant as Prestatyn's. The cafe was even more colourful on the day I visited, having been decorated for Prestatyn's first Pride. (Image: Matt Warner) It's always great to see local businesses getting on board with events and celebrations close to the community's heart, as the majority in town had. Inside the cafe, it is colourful and cosy, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. I was familiar with Cakes and Coffee, it having opened in 2023, but I have never been in myself. Run by former NHS worker Julie Ivers-Ellis, Cake and Coffee's speciality is cheesecakes. But there is so many other cake slices on offer, such as chocolate sponge, Victoria sponge, carrot cake, coffee cake, lemon and blueberry cake, and banana loaf. (Image: Matt Warner) On this occasion, to celebrate Pride, there was a rainbow cake that looked spectacular and had obviously been very popular. Not to mention flapjacks, brownies, blondies, cookies, and pastries, as well as light bites like crumpets, tea cakes and toast with a selection of jam. All of the tempting slices and treats on offer are paired with a 'mug run' coffee sourced from suppliers Aisha and Tim from the area. Having spun out from Julie's lockdown business Cheesecake Creations, I felt it only fitting to try a slice of cheesecake. (Image: Matt Warner) I was tempted by one of the special cheesecakes on offer, opting for a sweet treat that looked like an explosion of strawberry. It terms of its appearance, the slice brought to me was fantastic, adorned with strawberries, cream, sauce, and topped with half a cake. It stuck me how rare it is to be given a slice of cake that is taller than it is long. As spectacular as the style was, nothing had been lost in terms of substance. It was one of the best cheesecakes I have had. A heady cocktail of sweetness and different textures, from the fresh bite of fruit through the rich cream and crumbly base, that was most enjoyable. (Image: Matt Warner)The coffee too was great, rich and mellow, with non-dairy milk alternatives to choose from. (Image: Matt Warner)I can see why Cake and Coffee is so popular. Once visited, I can see it becoming many people's sweet treat spot of choice when they are in the mood for something a little fun and indulgent. Cake and Coffee has a Tripadvisor rating of 4.9 out of five based on 14 reviews. It has been rating a maximum of 5 starts for hygiene by the Food Standards Agency. "Absolutely adore this little gem of a cake & coffee shop. The cakes are honestly some of the best I've ever had, the only problem is trying to choose which one to go for. The staff are always so lovely and friendly, and the option to grab a takeaway is such a bonus. Small, cute and super cosy, a perfect little sweet treat spot." "Literally the best cakes and cheesecakes we have ever tasted, including the gluten free ones! The owners/staff are such lovely, welcoming people. This is one of my favourite places which is a bit of a drive for me but worth it!" "The local coffee is excellent, the atmosphere is cosy, and your warm welcome is unmatched. Of course, the cake is fabulous. What more could you ask for? If you visit Prestatyn, be sure to try it—you won't be disappointed!"

AN English seaside holiday park has revealed plans to open a new JD Wetherspoon pub. The Haven holiday park near Prestatyn will be getting a new Wetherspoon pub called The Boathouse pub. 3 3 The design, according to the architects planning the site, will prioritise "natural light" and an "eco-conscious design". It hasn't been confirmed when it will open. Last January, Haven signed an exclusive agreement with JD Wetherspoon to operate at its parks. New Wetherspoons pubs will open at sites in Devon, Lincolnshire, Kent and Northumberland by the end of 2025, costing a total investment of £6.7million. The first JD Wetherspoon pub at a Haven park opened at Haven Primrose Valley Holiday Park in North Yorkshire last spring. The planning statement said: "This development not only supports the resort's growth but also reinforces our commitment to sustainability and accessibility, ensuring that Presthaven Beach Resort remains a premier destination for leisure and relaxation. "We believe this extension will contribute significantly to the local economy and community, fostering an inviting atmosphere that attracts both new and returning guests." The Haven holiday park is home to a heated indoor pool, outdoor lazy river, bungee trampolines, a climbing wall, crazy golf course and a 'jump tower'. There are also miles of sandy beaches and protected dunes full of rare wildlife. There are range of other places to eat at too, including Chopstix, Burger King, Cook's Fish and Chips and Papa Johns. The Sun visits Wetherspoons largest pubin Ramsgate Away from the holiday park itself, the seaside town of Llandudno is nearby and features an array of shops and arcades - especially on the town's 19th century pier. Seagulls baited with food and run over across north Wales
Seagulls are being deliberately enticed into roads with food and then injured or killed by cars, according to a Foundation for Feathered Friends, (FFF) said the practice had increased over the past couple of years, with both adults and children spotted baiting the founder Denise Theophilus, 71, said the charity had received reports of food being deliberately thrown into roads in locations along the north Wales coast, including Prestatyn, Abergele and are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, like all wild birds, meaning it is illegal to intentionally kill or injure them. Ms Theophilus, 71, started the group to "balance the hatred" she had seen for gulls when she moved to north Wales. They are also considered a conservation concern with the six main gull species found in the UK, particularly herring gulls, in decline."I don't want gulls thinking all humans are like this," she added. Ms Theophilus said gulls were starving at this time of year and trying to feed their chicks, so would look for food wherever they can find it."I have lost track of all the messages that come in," she said."I was told about kids throwing food for gulls in Rhyl and watching as the cars nearly hit them."Children grow up thinking gulls are winged rats and it's OK to do whatever to them." She added that a volunteer had picked up a bird in Prestatyn on Sunday after a man had thrown food out of his vehicle and it was hit by a car when it flew down to get it. Five of the charity's volunteers have small pens and aviaries at their homes where injured and sick birds can be cared for, but Ms Theophilus said some birds could not recover enough to be released back into the wild. She added that nothing was being done to enforce the law on the issue and the police were "not interested"."It's really discouraging that no-one does anything," she Wales Police has been asked to comment.
