Will Smith addresses Oscars slap controversy in fiery freestyle on Fire in the Booth

Will Smith (R) hits Chris Rock as Rock spoke on stage during the 94th Academy Awards in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, U.S., March 27, 2022. REUTERS/Brian Snyder Will Smith seems to be revisiting the infamous 2022 Oscars incident involving Chris Rock in a newly released freestyle on Charlie Sloth's 'Fire in the Booth.' The moment adds another layer to Smith's musical comeback, which began with his March 2025 album, Based on a True Story. 'If you talking crazy out your face up on the stage and disrespect me on the stage, expect me on the stage,' Smith raps in the track. 'Jokers dish it out, cry out when it's time to take it, City full of real ones wasn't raised to fake it.' While Smith doesn't mention Rock by name, the reference to public disrespect on stage closely mirrors the Oscars moment that saw him slap the comedian over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The 94th Academy Awards in March 2022 made global headlines after Smith walked on stage and struck Rock during his hosting gig, yelling, 'Keep my wife's name out your f**king mouth!' The fallout included Smith's resignation from the Academy and a ten-year ban from attending its events. Smith's return to music started earlier this year with Based on a True Story and continued in June with the release of his single, 'Pretty Girls.' The freestyle marks his most direct lyrical reference yet to the Oscars controversy. While both Smith and Rock have made public comments about the incident in the years since, this verse signals that the event continues to resonate with Smith creatively — and may still be shaping his public narrative.

Will Smith Slammed Over New Song: 'He Should Slap Himself For Making This Music'

It seems Will Smith isn't making any new fans with his new music. The "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" just dropped a new single, but some on social media are wishing that he had never released it. Smith is certainly getting the Internet talking with his music video for "Pretty Girls," but maybe not in the way that he had hoped. In the introduction to the song, Smith, with the help of OBanga, lets fans know that he both likes and loves 'pretty girls,' but he gets into the meat of the song, which, as one can probably guess, is about sex. However, the lyrics have become fodder for social media memes, with some questioning the real meaning of 'Five plus five, you a dime tonigh,t' while others took offense at the listing of different 'flavors' of women, with Smith rapping 'vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, lemon.' The music video has also come under scrutiny, from the stark visuals to the decision to open the video with Smith describing a "problem" that he has inside a therapist's office. The music video made its way over to a music Reddit board over the weekend, where many questioned if this was part of Will Smith's planned 'comeback' following the infamous Chris Rock Oscar slap. 'Is this part of the bounce back? Yikes,' one fan commented, while another follower agreed that his new vibe was giving 'Divorced dad core.' 'He should slap himself for making this music,' another reader chimed in while several leaned into the Oscars slap. 'Keep your music out of your mouth!' another shared, prompting another user to add, 'No, let him keep this music in his mouth.' Other users wished that he didn't try to revive his music career at all and stayed out of the spotlight. 'Just go enjoy your money in private, bro,' one user wrote. This prompted a longer response from another netizen, who added, 'All the money in the world and this is what you choose to do with it. The legacy was already tarnished, and now he's trying to set it on fire.' Many on the Internet have been calling the lyrics to the song 'cringe,' while one asked, '5 + 5, you a dime tonight… is he implying he's f-cking two 5s? Therefore, their combined hotness is a ten?' 'That's how it works. Everyone knows that,' another snarked in response. 'Same as two ones make eleven.' 'Would low-key go kinda hard if that was the intention of this corny BS,' another chimed in while another user called his song 'KIDZ BOP for adults.' Other users felt that Smith put so little originality into his work that it could be the product of AI, with one user jokingly claiming that Smith wrote 'make me a generic cr-ppy rap song' into ChatGPT just to see what it wrote. 'Okay, now make it as if it's the worst song you've heard and add sh-ttier lyrics,' another user jokingly added to the 'prompt.' A third played along, adding, 'Okay, now make it sound like the worst of 2008 music and we're almost there.' 'Let's pause here — This request is pushing into territory that violates OpenAI's harmfulness content guidelines. I can't follow any requests that would lead to the creation of music that would be actively harmful to the ears of those who hear it,' another user joked. 'If you'd like, we can write some harmlessly stupid Country music songs instead! It seems that, although he is trying his best, this might not be the comeback that Will Smith was hoping for. As one user bluntly put it: 'I can't wait to never listen to this again.'

Will Smith Reveals He Also Turned Down Christopher Nolan's Inception

Will Smith has been going around promoting his new music video Pretty Girls , and while everyone knows the story of how he passed on The Matrix, he's revealed that there was another blockbuster project that he was almost a part of. In a recent talk with Kiss Xtra (via @ArtofDialogue), Smith reveals that he was actually approached by Christopher Nolan to be part of Inception , Nolan's 2010 blockbuster hit about dream thieves. Will Smith reveals director Christopher Nolan brought him the movie "Inception" first, but he turned it down and says movies about alternate realities don't pitch well. (🎥 Kiss Xtra) — The Art Of Dialogue (@ArtOfDialogue_) June 15, 2025 'I don't think I've ever even said it publicly before… Chris Nolan brought me Inception first and I didn't get it… I've never said that out loud, and now that I think about it, it's those movies that go into those alternate realities, they don't pitch well.' Admittedly, Smith hasn't been batting a lot of hits like he used to, with projects like Gemini Man and Emancipation . He did win the Oscar for King Richard , but everyone mostly just remembers him slapping Chris Rock during that event. For now, it does seem like Smith is leaning back on his rap career, and while others have been dubbing Pretty Girls as 'UncRap', some people think that the beat could be a hit if they sped it up. Personally I think it's great, and Smith still has that superstar charisma. Maybe there's room for him in Nolan's next film now that he's put it out there. Honestly I'm rooting for Smith after all the drama he's been through in the recent years. Hopefully he manages to bring the good graces of the audience back to him soon.

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A musician has gone viral for his simple suggestion that left social media fascinated by Will Smith's new single. Smith became popular for his work as both an actor and a rapper, but in the past few years, his career has been mainly focused on acting. However, the 56-year-old artist released a full-length album in March 2025 and he dropped a new single called "Pretty Girls" on Friday. The song prompted popular X, formerly Twitter, account HaterReport_ to post "I have no idea what possessed Will Smith to try to make new music." Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty Images Hip-hop artist Michael Christmas, however, wasn't so sure the song was a lost cause. "This is just a tempo issue," Christmas wrote on the platform. "Speed it up to 1.25 or slow it down to .75 and watch, much more fire song." Christmas' post went viral, drawing more than 11k reposts and 186k likes. This is just a tempo issue. Speed it up to 1.25 or slow it down to .75 and watch, much more fire song — Michael Christmas (@MickeyChristmas) June 15, 2025 "If anybody wants to pay me to listen to your music and give you what feels like very minute advice to maybe help, I am available," Christmas noted in a follow-up post. Christmas, who is based in Boston, has experienced success of his own—his song "Grab Her Hand," which features late hip-hop legend Mac Miller, has earned more than 6 million listens on Spotify, while his song "Not The Only One" has more than 5 million. Christmas averages more than 43,000 monthly listeners. "I have random posts go viral all the time, I never expect it, it's always dumb," Christmas told Newsweek. "At least this time it showed I am good at music." Users React Christmas' observation drew a big reaction from users shocked that such a simple correction could make such a difference. "You killed this for real," Oscar-winning filmmaker Matthew Cherry replied to Christmas. "0.75 is way better woah," user gothamhiphop added. "1.25x is FIRE," user ishverduzco wrote, adding, "Wow, great call." 'Stuck between genres' Christmas told Newsweek he expected the track to be bad because of the reaction online. However, "I make music so I don't believe in hating for the sake of, especially on a legend. I listened and immediately thought (and said out loud), 'You speed this up it's probably fire'," Christmas said. "I sped it up to 1.25 and said 'see!'" Christmas said he thought the song sounded like it was "stuck between genres," as if Smith was too attached to rapping instead of just making a party song. "The slower one to me reminded me of almost like some trippy goth-strobe-lighty party for models in a cave," he said. "But the fast one feels like a Jersey club type of night. In Boston we have these parties called 'Deep Cutt' and 'Red Eye.' I think they would mix that in so fire." He added that people should listen to his music and follow him on social media. "And call your mom," Christmas said, "I gotta call mine too."

Will Smith mocked over the release of ‘cringe' new music video Pretty Girls

Will Smith has been mocked mercilessly online over the release of his 'cringy' music video for his new single Pretty Girls. The internet had some thoughts about the song and its accompanying video on which Smith dances and sings about his love for all women. 'It's a full house, better play your cards right. Imma post your pic if you pose. Make one phone call, you in Vogue. Head, shoulders, knees, toes. Hold up, wait, pose,' the 56-year-old raps in the clip. 'I like BBLs. That stand for 'Bad b****es link up. Poppin in the club all night in the section. Picture perfect, I swear you perfection.' In the music video, the rapper, who rocks various technicolour outfits reminiscent of his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air days, is surrounded by multiple women as he sings: 'I like pretty girls. I love pretty girls. Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, lemon. All right f**k it I like women.' The clips has raked up over half a million views and counting on YouTube since its release on Saturday, but many reviews on social media unfavourable. 'I'm not a Will Smith hater but this is bad bad,' one user tweeted on X, as another wondered, 'Is this a humiliation ritual?' 'Will Smith released the WORST song of the decade,' one user commented, with one writing, 'Oh my god this is beyond terrible.' 'Fire everyone on his team that said yes will this is a good idea,' read another comment, with one fan saying, 'Imagine being 56 yo and this is how you want the world to see you.' Other fans threw some support behind the track, calling it a 'banger'. 'Honestly if the hook was dramatically less corny, the song wouldn't be that bad,' one reasoned, while one commented, 'I actually don't get the hate on this. For what it is it's pretty dope.' The song features on Smith's new album Based On A True Story which he released in April, marking his first record in 20 years. In the week of its release, the album shifted just 232 copies on streaming services and was downloaded only 36 times in the UK. It also missed the charts completely here in Australia. The album failed to crack the Top 200 and has become Smith's first album not to chart in the US. Even his collaboration with DJ Jazzy Jeff on the album didn't resonate despite the pair experiencing success on their 90s hits including Summertime and Boom! Shake the Room. It's a long way from the heights of his 1997 debut solo album Big Willie Style, which was certified nine times platinum in the US for sales of more than nine million copies. It was hoped that Smith's new album would help relaunch his career three years after he derailed it by slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Despite the disappointing new album sales, Smith said he is planning on releasing two more albums this year. He has also announced a tour for later in the year.
