Wigan homebuyers 'got £10,000 off by mucking in on site'
People buying homes on a new housing estate were able to get £10,000 off their mortgages by mucking in to help build them. They laboured, landscaped, painted and decorated at the St William's Church and Presbytery site in Wigan to get the reduction. The scheme, run by housing association Prima and charity Housing People Building Communities (HPBC), is known as "sweat equity". While mother-of-two Chloe Radcliffe said saving for a deposit had been impossible, putting the hours in on site had "given me the chance as a single parent to realise my dream". She added: "Me, my mum, dad and sister loved working on my home and building a great little community."Other people who did the same are now my neighbours."People who took part volunteered 500 hours each towards the shared-ownership development. They helped create 13 apartments and 14 new-build houses. Rachael McCoy, a nurse who also works alongside Ms Radcliffe at her nearby beauty salon, said getting on the property ladder would have been difficult without the scheme."It meant we could get our home without saving for a deposit," she added. Prima Group chief executive John Ghader said sweat equity was a "great alternative to the Bank of Mum and Dad".He added: "Instead of putting their hands in their pocket to help with a deposit – something not every parent can afford – some have got their hands on a shovel and contributed to their children's on-site sweat equity hours."HPBC chairwoman Reverend Dr Shannon Ledbetter said the project had help "provided affordable, accessible homes for those who might otherwise never have dreamt of it". Get to know Manchester contestant ahead of stint on The Great British Sewing Bee
The Great British Sewing Bee is back, and one of the contestants is from Manchester. Amateur sewers will hope they've got what it takes to make it to this year's final and ultimately be crowned the champion. Here's what we know about the Manchester contestant and the new series. What to Watch explained: 'Kit grew up in Surrey with their parents, brother and sister. In primary school, their mother started teaching their sister to sew sock puppets, so Kit taught themself out of spite. 'Kit then tried to sell their creations at school and got in trouble for trying to start a business! They picked up the hobby again at uni and have since been making a garment every week. 'Kit will often explore a haberdashery and look for the most 'awful' fabrics, on a mission to turn them into something beautiful. Kit also enjoys something (they call) 'pointless fashion', describing this style as 'so camp! Wearing something so utterly useless but looking fabulous'. Kit's 'pointless' concepts range from mesh hoodies to a coat held together with chains.' Prima explains that Kit now 'lives and works in Manchester'. If you've not watched the series before, here's how it works, according to What to Watch: 'Each week, the contestants must take part in three challenges: a Pattern Challenge to test their basic dressmaking skills, a Transformation Challenge to assess their creativity, plus a Made To Measure Challenge to create a bespoke garment. 'One contestant's creation is awarded Garment Of The Week by the judges, and another is sent home from the competition. 'The grand final sees the remaining three sewers battle it out to be crowned the winner.' You can watch the first episode of the 11th series of The Great British Sewing Bee on Tuesday, July 15 at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer. This Famous 2000s Rom-Com Star Is Headed For Divorce After 15 Years Of Marriage
It's over for Dermot Mulroney and Prima Apollinaare. According to ABC News, Dermot filed for divorce from Prima on Monday, June 23, citing irreconcilable differences. The actor, best known for his roles in My Best Friend's Wedding, Friends, and Zodiac, had been married to the musician for 15 years. They share two children, daughters Mabel Ray, 17, and Sally June, 15. Dermot married Prima, who previously went by Tharita Cutulle, in 2010. It was his second marriage behind Catherine Keener, whom he split from in 2007 after 17 years of marriage and one son, Clyde Keener Mulroney, 26. In court documents, Dermot reportedly requested joint physical and legal custody of their kids. People reported that he also asked for spousal support and for the court to deny Prima from receiving it from him — however a source refuted those claims. "No one is asking for anything," the insider told People, "and no one is denying anything. They are not arguing over the children nor money." According to the source, their split is "amicable." "They used mediators, not lawyers, as they are friends and this is amicable," the source shared. "They were advised to file this way." The divorce comes just over a year after the two made a rare appearance for the Fox game show We Are Family. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dermot gushed over how "fun" it was to perform with Prima on the show. "We both like to do karaoke together and we both like music so much," Prima added. "It was actually, for me, it was really an amazing experience to be on television and singing. Of course, with my husband, I play with him all the time in the house. We all play instruments. We have harps, guitars, ukulele, pianos, you name it. So we're all musicians, but to actually do it and just have people winning money is also very rewarding. I've been singing since I was very little and music is my heart. So it was a great experience. They made it so easy for us. We had so much fun. I wish we could do it again."
