HORNELL, N.Y. (WROC) — News 8's Primetime 585 Shining Star features students who are making their mark on their communities through sport and academics. Wednesday's Shining Star spotlights Brynna Wilkinson, a seventh grader from Hornell. At the young age of 12, Wilkinson has proven herself to be a promising athlete, playing at the varsity level for the school's soccer team and running track. Having just begun her varsity career in seventh grade, Wilkinson has achieved 13 goals and 5 assists during the soccer season, helping her team become the LCAA D1 champions, Section V Class B champions, Far West Regional champions, and participate in the New York State Final Four. Without experience running track before, she joined the indoor team this winter and broke the school's record in the 1000-meter run during the RWTL Championship meet. Wilkinson is also credited with clocking the fastest time in the nation for a seventh grader during the season with a time of 3:10:48 before going on to win a sectional title in the 4×800 relay. She continued with track this spring, breaking another school record running the steeplechase for her first time, an impressive feat to achieve as a middle schooler. A sectional title in the same event followed Wilkson's run. That night, she also took home first place in the 800 and second place in the 1500. Outside of her athletic achievements in high school sports, Wilkinson plays for the Western New York Flash, NYW ODP, and Gaffer City Woman's FC teams. Most recently, she was named Play of the Match in her first game with the Gaffer City Woman's FC after she scored two goals, one of which was a header.
