Emmys Analysis: Streamers Inject Fresh Blood Into Nominations With ‘The Studio', ‘Severance', ‘The Pitt' & Other Breakthroughs
After last year's Primetime Emmy broadcast that sported fresh blood in terms of marquee category winners with Hacks for Comedy Series, Shōgun for Drama Series and Baby Reindeer for Limited Series/Anthology, even down to the usually tired and predictable Reality Series lineup with newcomer The Traitors, this morning's announcement of nominees for the 77th annual Primetime Emmys gives us hope for a repeat of no repeats in the major categories. That is something increasingly rare but perhaps is a new trend where voters actually aren't doing the same old/same old that Emmys past, fairly or unfairly, were accused of. With Severance dominating the Drama Series field with an impressive 27 nominations (wow) in its second season, doubling the haul of its first which debuted way back in 2022 (and only two crafts wins then), it looks like a front-runner for a triumph come September. Should it falter, a first-season entry with 13 nominations, The Pitt, seems the most likely to benefit and perhaps pull off a win for its debut as a powerhouse on HBO/Max. It even might get a win for star Noah Wyle, who, after losing regularly decades ago for ER, has returned to an emergency room with a real chance to finally join the winners circle. More from Deadline 'Squid Game,' Diego Luna & Elisabeth Moss Snubbed In Emmy Nominations; Beyoncé & Martin Scorsese Among Big Surprises Everything We Know About the 2025 Emmys So Far 'The Studio's Seth Rogen And Evan Goldberg Recruit Guest Star Sarah Polley As Season 2 Writer; Ron Howard Says He Would Return "In A Heartbeat" RELATED: Kathryn Hahn, Kaitlyn Dever, Catherine O'Hara, Michael Urie & More React To 2025 Emmy Nominations And in Comedy Series, the seesaw battle of the past couple of years between FX's The Bear and HBO/Max's Hacks now looks to bow to the sensational showing of Apple TV+'s industry favorite The Studio, with a remarkable 23 nominations (tying The Bear's first-season haul). Proving, as Hacks did, that voters can't resist shows about themselves, nearly half its nominations belong to the cast, with star/creator Seth Rogen nabbing three nominations including Lead Actor, co-stars Ike Barinholtz, Catherine O'Hara nd Kathryn Hahn in Supporting categories and a whopping six nominations for Guest Stars. Five of those are playing themselves, including four out of six for Guest Actor (Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie and Martin Scorsese) and one for Guest Actress (Zoë Kravitz) in addition to Bryan Cranston definitely not playing himself. Is this a record for acting nominations for people playing themselves? It has to be. Incidentally, for Howard, who started acting at age 5 in the late 1950s and has co-starred in several series as well, his bonkers turn as director Ron Howard represents his first Emmy nomination ever for acting, even though he has won a few as a producer in the past. Joining him in the newbie acting Emmy stats is a long-overdue Harrison Ford, up for his first-ever Emmy for his moving role in season 2 of Shrinking, a show that is another breakthrough with its first Comedy Series nomination among its seven mentions. RELATED: Where's My Show? Why Some Of Your Favorites Won't Be Emmy-Nominated This Year Apple TV+ is responsible for Shrinking, as well as both Severance and The Studio, and looks to have a very good night when the Primetime Emmys are handed out on September 14. Netflix, which was the runner-up to HBO/Max's personal-record 142 nominations with 121 of its own, also looks to continue its impressive streak in the Limited Series/Anthology category, having won it in three of the past four years including the past two with Beef and Baby Reindeer. This year it not only has the unquestioned and global sensation front-runner in Adolescence with 13 nominations but also Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. with 11 nominations and anthology Black Mirror with 10, making for 34 noms overall in a strong category against HBO/Max's leading The Penguin with 24 and Hulu's Dying for Sex with nine. It is the one category where surprisingly Apple didn't come to play despite two contenders from early in the season, Presumed Innocent and especially Alfonso Cuarón's Disclaimer; neither the cut, though some of their stars did. This particular category just begs to be expanded to eight nominees, just as the TV Academy did with Drama and Comedy series. CBS will be televising the Emmys this year with their turn at the wheel of the four rotating broadcast networks, and it got the opportunity to make an early jump on things by announcing the nominees in two categories on CBS Mornings that generally still friendly to broadcast TV: Talk Series and Reality Competition Series. Coincidentally, the network had three of the combined eight nominees in those categories — Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Survivor and The Amazing Race — making it appear that CBS was the early nominations leader (!). It would be a short-lived lead because when the rest of the nominations were announced nearly four hours later, momentum predictably changed. And no matter how you look at things, it is the streamers that control this competition and make the Emmy-friendly contenders that continue to draw the big names and become the center of conversation. It actually is why there were no jaw-dropping shockers this morning. I mean, didn't we know that two-thirds of The White Lotus cast would be nominated? When the Actors branch likes a show, they really like it. RELATED: Everything We Know About the 2025 Emmys So Far Of the shows that campaigned heavily, the biggest loser was the final season for The Handmaid's Tale which only landed a single Guest Actress nomination for Cherry Jones, who either wins or gets nominated no matter what show she is in. Consider that Handmaid's Tale won big in its very first season and is going out very quietly in its sixth, which might indicate that voters indeed are looking for fresh blood — or this particular series' vision of a dystopian future has just gotten too close for comfort to our current reality. RELATED: Emmy Scorecards: Nominations By Program & Network Television Academy chair Cris Abrego said a record was set in terms of voters turnout of the 26,000-plus members, and that indicates an excitement for this season and the freshness of the nominees including so many potential first-time winners ranging in age from 15-year-old Adolescence star Owen Cooper to 83-year-old Ford, who could become the youngest and oldest ever-winners in their respective categories on their first try. I guess that means it is never too early or too late, Emmy-wise. On to Phase 2 as the campaign for Emmy gold heats up. Richard Gadd reveals he cut Baby Reindeer episode to make it 'even darker'
Richard Gadd has revealed there is one episode of Baby Reindeer that never made it to air. The writer and actor, 36, was propelled to global fame last April when his seven-part drama series hit Netflix. In a plot inspired by Gadd's own trauma, the hit series follows struggling comedian Donny (played by the creator) and his encounters with a female stalker, Martha (Jessica Gunning), who, among other behaviours, sent him over 41,000 emails and 350 hours of voicemails. The black comedy proved somewhat of an overnight success for the streamer, breaking into its all-time most viewed shows with 335.2million viewing hours in 2024 alone. However, the series would have turned out very differently if not for Gadd insisting that one episode be removed. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. Appearing at the Future Visions conference in Melbourne, Australia, the star said he 'fought hard' for the ep to be cut as it would have—somehow—made Baby Reindeer even darker. 'I remember when we were developing it, there was the note that kept coming in, and probably rightfully so, about 'The show is just too dark. You need to give us a respite',' he revealed today. Spilling details of the lost episode, Gadd said it showed his character 'escaping' Martha by visiting his parents outside of London. 'There's a whole episode where I go to the football with my dad, and I spend a day with my dad (played by Mark Lewis Jones).' However, Gadd felt like Martha's absence was felt the moment she left the screen. He continued: 'But I felt like a lot of the note that was coming in was that we needed a break from Martha because she's so relentless. 'But really, when we got to the edit, I thought, 'You miss her every time she's not on screen.' And I thought, in a lot of ways, the sooner you get back to her, the better.' Since its debut, Baby Reindeer and its cast have gone on to scoop several prestigious awards. These include six Primetime Emmys, two for outstanding writing and outstanding lead actor for Gadd, and another being outstanding supporting actress for Gunning. It also won two Golden Globes, again, with a best supporting actress gong for Gunning, and triumphed in major categories at the TV Baftas. Although Gadd has not been able to ride the wave of success of the show as blissfully as he might have liked, as the 'real Martha', Fiona Harvey, launched a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against him and Netflix. It didn't take long for social media sleuths to uncover her identity and expose her old posts, with the woman claiming to be her later giving interviews and making public appearances. She is now seeking monetary damages of at least $170million (£132m) for alleged defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and violations of her right of publicity. The legal battle has been quietly rumbling on in the background of Baby Reindeer's awards show glory, with Harvey claiming the show, billed as a 'true story,' portrayed Martha as a 'twice-convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison.' Harvey herself has never been convicted of stalking Gadd, branding the show 'the biggest lie in television history.' The case is yet to reach court; however, US District Judge R. Gary Klausner ruled last September that Harvey's case had legs, saying it was wrong to label Baby Reindeer a 'true story', with 'no effort' made to conceal Harvey's identity. Appealing in response, Netflix lawyers argued that Harvey 'did not allege a provably false statement of fact was made about her', saying damage had already been done to her reputation due to past news stories relating to her alleged hounding of other public figures. In his own court filing, Gadd stated that Baby Reindeer is a 'fictionalised retelling of [his] emotional journey through several extremely traumatic real experiences'. He wrote that 'the series is a dramatic work' and it is 'not a documentary or an attempt at realism'. In May this year, the Scottish comedian opened up about the struggles of penning a smash hit show, comparing the aftermath to a 'hurricane'. 'There have been a lot of challenging moments,' he confessed to The Guardian. 'The show has reached such an extreme pitch—there have been times when I've felt like the pressure was intolerable. 'It's been a hurricane. I don't think I'm at the point of reflection yet. I need some real time off to figure out how to get my feet back on the ground, because I feel very squeezed.' Gadd said, over a year later, he is 'still getting used to' people knowing who he is, having had people 'knocking on [his] door for autographs' just days after Baby Reindeer premiered last spring. 'I was an arthouse comedian, performing to five people every night, so it was a huge adjustment. 'I'm still getting used to it. Going to the supermarket comes with a million caveats now.' Following Baby Reindeer, Gadd is set to star in a new BBC series, of which he is the creator, writer, and executive producer. More Trending Titled Half Man, the original six-episode drama series also stars Jamie Bell as Niall, while Gadd plays his 'estranged brother' Ruben. When Ruben shows up unexpectedly at Niall's wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults viewers back through 40 years, from the 1980s to present day. Revisiting all the ups and downs of their lives, it aims to explore what it means to be a man. A release date is yet to be announced. Got a story? Lisa Kudrow's The Comeback Season 3 Sets Release Date Window in Video
HBO has officially announced Season 3 release date window in a new announcement video, confirming when the Lisa Kudrow-led series will air. The Comeback Season 3 will release sometime in May 2026, according to HBO. The third and final season of the series comes 20 years after the show first debuted on the network back in 2005 and 10 years after its second season aired in 2015. Production on Season 3 is set to begin this summer and will see Lisa Kudrow, Dan Bucatinsky, Laura Silverman, and Damian Young all return as series regulars. Check out the Season 3 announcement video below: 'Valerie Cherish has found her way back to the current television landscape. Neither of us are surprised she did,' said creator Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow in a statement. The Comeback originally premiered in 2005 and was created by both Kudrow and King. The series was a satirical look inside the entertainment television industry and is presented as found footage. The show follows Valerie Cherish (Kudrow), a veteran B-list sitcom actress who is looking to revive her career in a Hollywood that is getting increasingly younger. The show originally ran for just one season but was revived in 2014 for a second season. Throughout its run, The Comeback was nominated for four Primetime Emmys, with Kudrow being nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series twice.
