Karnataka govt to launch employability assessment for STEM graduates in Kalaburagi

In an effort to bridge the employability gap among graduates in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, the government of Karnataka will launch a structured, assessment-led model to evaluate and enhance job readiness among STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) graduates. The initiative will begin with a pilot assessment drive in Kalaburagi on August 9 and 10. Addressing a press conference at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Kalaburagi on July 29, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and Kalaburagi district In-charge Priyank Kharge said the initiative is being rolled out under the State's flagship Nipuna Karnataka programme, through the Department of IT/BT, and the Karnataka Skill Development Corporation (KSDC). The effort is also supported by Kalaburagi MP Radhakrishna Doddamani. The pilot programme will target 2,500 STEM students in Kalaburagi in the first phase. Based on its success, the model will be adapted and scaled across other districts, making Karnataka the first State in India to launch a data-driven, localised employability assessment programme tailored specifically for STEM graduates. 'This is not just another skilling programme. We are introducing a diagnostic-first approach. Candidates will undergo a 90-minute online test to assess aptitude, communication, digital literacy and behavioural readiness. The assessments will be conducted by Unstop, a national engagement and hiring platform, and each participant will receive a personalised skill-gap report along with an Individual Development Plan (IDP). This will allow for further training and placements to be customised based on individual needs, shifting away from a one-size-fits-all approach,' said Mr. Priyank. The assessments will be held at Shetty Institute of Technology in Kalaburagi. There will be four slots each day (10 am, 12 noon, 2.30 pm, and 4.30 pm). Candidates must report at the venue by 9 a.m. Registration opens on July 29, and will remain open until August 7, via this URL, or by scanning a QR code. Slots will be allotted on a first-come, first-serve basis, with preference given to STEM graduates who had registered for the Kalaburagi Udyoga Mela held earlier this year. Assessment hall tickets will be issued via SMS and email on August 7 and 8. The Minister noted that a recent analysis during the Udyog Mela showed that 70% of students scored below 50% in aptitude and 63% in communication skills. The pilot initiative is aimed at closing such gaps systematically and measurably. The programme is also expected to improve hiring outcomes for employers by offering job-ready candidates, and enable educational institutions to better align their training with industry expectations. 'This initiative is not just about jobs, it is about holistic talent development and preparing our youth for the future,' the Minister said. Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil, MLAs Allamprabhu Patil, M.Y. Patil, Kalaburagi Urban Development Authority Chairman Mazhar Alam Khan, Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Taranum, Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa, Superintendent of Police Adduru Srinivasulu were present.

Sub-plan funds are spent as per rules, says Priyank

Kalaburagi: Our govt is spending the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) and Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) funds according to the rules. If the funds were used for other purposes, let the BJP provide evidence, and we will take action, said rural development and panchayat raj minister Priyank Kharge. On Monday, Priyank told reporters that during the BJP's Basavaraj Bommai tenure, the SCSP and TSP funds were spent elsewhere. "Bommai himself admitted it. After we came to power, we repealed the '7D' sub-clause of this act. Now, we are utilising the funds under rules 7A, 7B, and 7C. Let them point out if any rules were violated," he challenged. "If BJP leaders truly care about Dalits and tribals, they should strive to implement the SCSP and TSP Act at the Union govt level," he said. When asked about the BJP protest over the lack of fertiliser, Kharge retorted, saying BJP members should protest in Delhi and ensure the supply of fertilisers to the state.

My father has no regrets over not becoming Chief Minister, says Priyank Kharge

All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge has no regrets over not becoming Chief Minister, Minister Priyank Kharge said here on Monday. Replying to a query by media persons on his father's remark made during a programme in Vijayapura on Sunday about missing a chance to become Chief Minister, Priyank Kharge clarified that the former only recalled events in his political journey but has no regrets over them. Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mann Ki Baat, Priyank Kharge urged Mr. Modi to act and contribute to Kalaburagi district instead of giving speeches and taking credit for work 'done by others'. 'Last month, he spoke about Kalaburagi jowar roti and recently, about the Bahmani Fort. The Centre has neither made any contribution for the development of the roti industry nor taken steps for giving a facelift to the fort,' he said. Reacting to a question on Mr. Modi surpassing Indira Gandhi's tenure as the second longest serving Prime Minister, Mr. Kharge said that let Mr. Modi contribute even half of the achievements Indira Gandhi made. Her contributions include nationalization of banks and land reforms. She strategically disintegrated Pakistan into two. What has Mr. Modi done for the country,' he asked.

Let BJP provide evidence on diversion of funds meant for SCs, STs, says Kharge

Refuting the allegation that funds allocated for the welfare of Dalits under Scheduled Castes Sub-Plan (SCSP) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) have been diverted by the Congress government, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge has asked BJP leaders to provide records to prove their charge. 'Let the BJP leaders furnish detailed documents on the diversion of such funds, instead of making baseless accusation and misleading people,' Mr. Kharge told a press conference here on Monday. 'In fact, these funds were diverted for various department works during the then BJP government in the State. The former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who is now BJP MP, himself accepted it during Assembly session. But now the same BJP leaders are spreading false propaganda and attempting to criticize the Congress-led government in the State,' Mr. Kharge claimed. Mr. Kharge dared the BJP leaders to get more funds from the Central government for the welfare of Dalits and adivasis, if they are really concerned about them. He said that at least a State ruled by the BJP should receive additional funds from the Central government for the uplift of the marginalized communities. Reacting to the allegation made by the Opposition about discrimination in the allocation of development funds to constituencies represented by their MLAs, Mr. Kharge said, 'When the BJP was in power in the State, there was discrimination in releasing funds to constituencies represented by Congress MLAs.' 'They have not allocated equal grants and I have openly expressed this many times,' he claimed. Responding to a query on the shortage of urea in the State, Mr. Kharge said that Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy met the Union Agriculture Minister urging him to supply urea to meet demand. This year, the State has not received the required quantity of fertilizer. In Kalaburagi district, farmers have achieved 100% of the sowing target and there is a demand for 500 tonnes of fertilizer. Of this demand, 200 tonnes have already been supplied from Bagalkot and the remaining (300 tonnes) will be supplied soon, he said. Mr. Kharge urged the BJP leaders to protest in Delhi and ensure that adequate fertilizer is supplied to the State. Reacting to BJP national general secretary (organization) B.L. Santhosh's objection over AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Surjewala holding meeting with Ministers in the State, Mr. Kharge asked 'Whether the BJP leaders expect Mr. Santhosh or RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale to conduct such meetings.' Expressing displeasure over the recent developments at the Central University of Karnataka, the Minister accused Central Universities of functioning like RSS Shakhas. 'Earlier, we were denied permission for organising a programme on the university campus. The university was established with the efforts of All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge to facilitate the educational development of the region but the campus is being used for RSS activities,' he claimed.

Drone cameras to monitor public safety in Kalaburagi

Kalaburagi: The Karnataka govt has bolstered its public safety infrastructure by introducing drone technology in Kalaburagi, whilst creating opportunities for youth development in drone operations across the state. This demonstrates its dedication to enhancing law enforcement capabilities. At a ceremony in Bengaluru on Thursday, advanced surveillance drones - Nimble-Eye and OS01 - were presented to Kalaburagi district police commissioner SD Sharanappa by home minister G Parameshwara. These Karnataka-manufactured drones feature AI-enabled surveillance capabilities and have been implemented through corporate social responsibility initiatives. Speaking at the event, home minister G Parameshwara said, "Our vision is to equip every police station in Karnataka with drones, which will make our forces smarter, faster and more responsive. Karnataka-made drones are a symbol of how technology can serve public interest." The sophisticated features of drones include round-the-clock surveillance, number plate recognition, crowd and vehicle monitoring, and swift field deployment capabilities, providing enhanced support to police operations across districts. IT and BT minister Priyank Kharge, who also oversees rural development and panchayat raj, announced plans to train 500 Kalaburagi youth in DGCA-certified drone operations. This initiative aims to create opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, logistics, disaster management, and infrastructure monitoring. Minister Priyank Kharge said: "The strength of our technology should be a force for rural transformation and opportunity. The drone sector is one of the fastest-growing industries globally. Drones are being used in various fields. By upskilling the youth of Kalaburagi in cutting-edge drone technologies, we prepare them for future jobs, new livelihoods, local innovation, and rural technology. We are helping to create ecological systems. " Minister Priyank Kharge highlighted Karnataka's prominent position in embracing advanced technologies, establishing robust infrastructure, and generating job opportunities through integrated and efficient governance systems. He emphasised the state's commitment to smart administrative practices that foster development and progress.
