Shefali Jariwala death: Top aestheticians explain anti-ageing fixation among celebs

The fixation around staying younger among people, especially celebrities, has opened a Pandora's box. Actor Shefali Jariwala's sudden death has put a spotlight on the growing trend of using anti-ageing suggest that anti-ageing took centre stage in the early 2000s after Hollywood became obsessed with looking perpetually young. As Indian celebrities also followed suit, their fans too realised that it's easier done than it looks. All you need is a loose string on your the popular fairy tale story, the witch had to kidnap Rapunzel to use her magical hair powers to stay younger forever, but celebrity dermatologists suggest that the same can be achieved in thousands. As per sources, while Botox is priced at Rs 5000 onwards, one can get fillers for Rs 15,000 and above. The thread's procedure costs Rs 30,000 to 40,000, while IV infusion is priced at Rs 6000 to Rs Today spoke to Mumbai's top celebrity aestheticians, who shed light on the craze for anti-ageing and how one can avoid any kind of complications while undergoing these pressure to look 'flawless'Dr Jyoti Aneja (founder of La Grace Luxury Skin Clinic) shared that the rise of high-definition cameras, red carpets, paparazzi and now social media has created an unrelenting pressure to look flawless, at every angle, every moment. She mentioned that what started as a pursuit of vanity has evolved, as people are trying to prolong their vitality to look and perform better in their 40s and 50s."Celebrities aren't chasing youth, they're chasing longevity," she can anti-ageing medicines keep one young forever? The answer is a clear no from Dr Apratim Goel, founder of Cutis mentioned that no medical treatments can stop ageing, but they can slow down certain signs, be it wrinkles, skin sagging, pigmentation or tiredness."But they don't change your biological age. Ageing is natural, and while we can manage it smartly, there is no 'forever youth' pill."She also addressed how unrealistic beauty standards affect mental health."The obsession with flawless skin and eternal youth leads to anxiety, body image issues and low self-esteem, especially among youngsters. People need to understand, beauty evolves with age. Healthy skin is better than white or wrinkle-free skin. We should feel empowered by skincare, not enslaved by it. It is okay to do aesthetic treatments if it makes you feel good, but don't resort to shortcuts."The most sought-after anti-ageing treatments and medicinesGiving a low-down on the most popular anti-ageing medicines and procedures among celebrities, Dr Goel said that celebrities often choose a combination of treatments like Botox for wrinkle prevention, fillers to restore lost volume, laser and RF treatments for skin tightening and pigmentation and skin boosters like Profhilo or NCTF for hydration and skin quality."There are skin-tightening procedures like Endolift, threads, HIFU and Ulthera. Also popular are oral supplements like collagen, NAD+ and sometimes off-label medications like fat burners, semaglutide, metformin or peptides. These should essentially be taken under a doctor's guidance," she Aneja also elaborated on the same."Glutathione injections are popular for that lit-from-within radiance. It's a master antioxidant that helps detox the body and brighten the skin by subtly reducing melanin production. NAD IVs, which are like charging your cellular batteries, boost energy, support DNA repair and are often called 'ageing's off switch'. Topical retinoids continue to be the gold standard. These vitamin-A derivatives boost collagen, reduce pigmentation and refine skin texture over time. There's also PRP and microneedling, popularly called 'vampire facials', which use your growth factors to stimulate skin renewal.""Non-invasive lifting treatments such as Thermage, Ultherapy and Morpheus are like a time machine – no surgery, no downtime. Then there are HiFEM + RF bodysculpting treatments (EmSculpt NEO, Emsella), which act as a medical gym from core to floor. They tone muscle and melt fat in one go. Many are also opting for IV nutritional drips, vitamin cocktails, glutathione boosters and hydration bags – wellness on drip for instant revival post-flight or pre-event," the dermatologist of the risks tooDr Aneja, however, warned that even the safest treatments need the right glutathione can cause sudden drops in blood pressure and dizziness, especially if done on an empty stomach, NAD IVs' side effects include potential nausea, fatigue or liver strain if not administered Aneja added, "Misuse over time can lead to fluid retention and insulin resistance. Also, Botox and fillers when botched can cause 'frozen expressions', asymmetry or worse, vascular complications leading to skin necrosis."Amid the sudden death controversy of Shefali Jariwala, Dr Goel also mentioned that in rare cases, these medicines can contribute to severe events like a heart attack or even death, especially if pre-existing conditions or illnesses are present."If taken incorrectly, especially unsupervised IV drips or high-dose vitamins, there are risks. A common trend among celebrities is to opt for these treatments at home without proper medical supervision."She also warned of allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), heart rhythm disturbances, organ overload (liver or kidney), risk of air embolism or infections with home IV use and added that some fat-loss injections or anti-ageing meds can alter metabolism and cause serious self-prescribed menaceDr Goel also touched upon the subject of unprescribed anti-ageing and vitamins being used by people, even celebrities."This is a disturbing trend. Social media pressure, unrealistic beauty standards, a quick-fix mentality, misguidance and a lack of proper regulation of wellness providers have all contributed. Celebrities are constantly in the spotlight, so there's a fear of looking old, and in trying to maintain perfection, many turn to non-medical sources or influencers for solutions, which is risky."Calling out Gen Z for self-prescribing NAD drips or popping anti-ageing pills in their 20s, Dr Aneja also said, "They are using meds their skin hasn't even asked for yet – whether it's glutathione injections, collagen pills or NAD IVs from unverified sources. India's regulations around cosmetic IVs and oral supplements are still evolving. Many products sold online skip medical scrutiny entirely. This makes it essential to consult a board-certified dermatologist. Your skin deserves science, not shortcuts from a viral reel."Both doctors stressed that before taking any kind of medicine, one should always consult a certified doctor or dermatologist. No one should self-medicate or buy products online without a prescription, and one must always ask about product authenticity and source."Go to clinics with proper emergency protocols in place. Start slow, listen to your body and follow up regularly. Anti-ageing is a medical process, not a spa treatment, and definitely not a fashion. Don't compare yourself to filtered faces online, and always believe that confidence is the best glow-up," Dr Goel Aneja also added that one should stick to science: use sunscreen, get enough sleep, eat healthily, stay hydrated and work out."Simplify your skincare, avoid stress and laugh more. Graceful ageing isn't about fighting age, it's about embracing yourself, feeling confident and taking care of your skin the right way."- Ends advertisement

The Future Of Beauty: Organic vs Tech-Infused Skincare In 2025

Skincare is no longer just about appearances—it's about making choices that feel right. More people are looking for products that do more than just work; they want skincare that aligns with their values. At the same time, advancements in beauty technology are reshaping the way we care for our skin. As the industry evolves, the demand for both innovation and sustainability is growing. People expect products that deliver results without compromise, and brands are adapting to meet these expectations. The future of skincare isn't about choosing between science and nature—it's about finding a balance that makes beauty smarter, more mindful, and better suited for today's world. Dr Palki Sharma, Aesthetic doctor, Skin Expert, Chief Consultant at PS Body Skin Hair Clinic shares inputs on Organic vs Tech- Infused skincare in 2025 The Growth of Organic Skincare Consumers today want to know exactly what goes into their skin products. They are looking for transparency and effectiveness that are sourced responsibly. In response, brands are also simplifying their formulas, turning to natural components like aloe vera, turmeric, and locally grown botanicals that help preserve biodiversity. At the same time, there's a growing demand for water-efficient options, with solid cleansers and concentrated formulas becoming increasingly popular. All about the Rise of Tech-Infused Skincare Skincare is also becoming smarter and more effective with AI, advanced diagnostics, and at-home devices. AI-powered apps can now analyze skin concerns, while tools like LED masks and microcurrent devices bring professional treatments into the home. New technologies are also transforming in-clinic procedures, offering targeted solutions for aging, hydration, and hair removal. Bio-remodeling treatments like Profhilo use ultrapure hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate the skin, improving elasticity and smoothing fine lines. Hair removal has also advanced, with the Soprano Titanium Special Edition and its Trio MAX technology providing a fast, virtually painless experience for all skin tones. Nanotechnology is enhancing how well ingredients like vitamin C and retinol are absorbed, making them more effective while minimizing irritation. Meanwhile, biotech innovations are creating sustainable alternatives to traditional skincare ingredients, ensuring both potency and environmental responsibility. This fusion of science and beauty is making high-performance skincare more accessible than ever. What are the Challenges in Skincare this year? Consumers are paying closer attention to what's in their skincare, but it's not always easy to tell which products are truly organic and which are just marketed that way. Many want natural ingredients but worry they won't be as effective as lab-created actives. Meanwhile, high-quality organic products and advanced skincare technology often come at a premium, making them out of reach for many. AI-powered skincare tools add another layer of complexity. While they provide personalized insights, they also collect sensitive data, raising concerns about privacy and security. As the industry evolves, finding the right balance between authenticity, effectiveness, affordability, and ethical technology remains a key challenge. Skincare is now all about finding the right balance between organic and lab-made products. While bio-fermented botanicals make natural ingredients more powerful, AI tools help personalize skincare routines, and lab-grown extracts offer a sustainable way to get real results. Rather than competing, nature and science are working together. As part of your skincare routine this year, you might start with a gentle organic cleanser and follow it up with a high-tech serum, combining the best of both worlds. As skincare evolves, this blend of tradition and innovation is making it smarter, more effective, and better for both people and the planet.

Everything You Need To Know About Skin Rejuvenation With Profhilo

Skin boosters like Prohfilo are "injectable moisturizers" that significantly improve skin's texture, tone, and overall hydration. Skin boosters have recently gained popularity for its ability to improve tone, texture, and overall hydration of skin. These injectables typically contain natural ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamins, antioxidants and amino acids. There are several skin boosters currently available in the market today, but among those, Profhilo is widely known for holding the highest concentration of pure hyaluronic acid (HA). A friend's testimonial brought me to Belo Clinic for my first session. 'It is a heaven sent! My skin has never looked better. It is more hydrated and radiant without that scary, frozen face you get from fillers or other treatments.' I was immediately sold. Profhilo treatments are quick, but not necessarily painless. High concentrations of hyaluronic acid are strategically injected into five precise points of the face including the sides of the face, cheeks, jawline, chin and near the ears. Pioneer in the Philippine aesthetics industry, Dr. Vicki Belo, explains, 'These specific points are chosen because they are anatomically safe, minimize bruising, and allow the HA to diffuse effectively across the mid and lower face, where we tend to lose volume and elasticity first.' While some shots were bearable with the help of topical anesthesia, other areas like the jawline and cheeks had me squirming and tearing up a little. Despite having sworn off doing Profhilo again, I found myself back at the clinic after a month. 'It was definitely worth the pain,' I told my doctor. The treatment saw a dramatic improvement in my skin. Pores appeared smaller. Skin was visibility more radiant and hydrated. I liken it to the post facial glow, except it was staring back at me in the mirror–every single day, even without makeup. 'Profhilo is truly a breakthrough in the world of aesthetic dermatology because it works on bio-remodeling the skin,' Dr. Belo explains. 'Unlike traditional fillers that simply add volume or contour, Profhilo stimulates the skin to rejuvenate itself. It contains one of the highest concentrations of pure hyaluronic acid on the market, which deeply hydrates while also triggering collagen and elastin production. It's the perfect treatment for those who want to refresh their appearance without altering their facial contours.' Prohfilo is best described as an injectable moisturizer. Dr. Belo adds, 'Imagine a high-performance skin booster that doesn't just sit on top of your skin, but works from within to restore youthful bounce and glow. It's like injectable skincare, but with deeper, more lasting effects.' Two sessions, spaced a month apart, are recommended to optimize the effects of Profhilo. This allows for the hyaluronic to saturate and sit in a gradual, controlled way. The first session primes the skin by hydrating from the inside and stimulating collagen production. After a month, a 'top up' helps to lock in the skin benefits for long-term skin improvement. Profhilo enhances quality, elasticity, and hydration at the cellular level. It is nothing like dermal fillers, which smoothens out wrinkles by relaxing the muscles. 'Think of it as nourishment for your skin, while Botox, Thermage, and Ultherapy are more like structure and scaffolding,' says the renowned doctor. 'We have yet to find a treatment that can target every single layer, giving you that natural and bright lift. This is why I think Profhilo works beautifully when administered alongside these treatments for a more comprehensive anti-aging approach.' Profhilo treatments also go well with in-clinic facials, gentle lasers and LED therapies. 'A good skincare routine with vitamin C, ceramides and broad-spectrum SPF is essential to maintain effects,' advises Dr. Belo. 'I always recommend using a hyaluronic acid-based serum to lock in hydration and a retinol or peptide-based cream at night to synergize with the collagen-boosting effects of Profhilo.' A few days before and after my Profhilo treatments, I was also told to avoid abrasive treatments, harsh acids and exfoliants. 'We recommend pausing treatments like micro-needling, chemical peels, and RF machines for about a week to two weeks to minimize sensitivity or inflammation.' Apart from the doctor recommended skin care protocol, Profhilo is an efficient, easy, and maintenance-free treatment especially during the summertime. It is non photosensitizing, which spares skin from becoming extra sensitive to the sun. Most peels or lasers require that you hide from the sun for a few days to prevent burning and hyperpigmentation. Dr. Belo concludes, 'Best of all, it has no downtime, so you can go straight back to your summer plans looking refreshed, dewy, and radiant.'

Why holistic aesthetics matter more than you think

Dr. Nina Bal, Facial Aesthetic Practitioner and Founder of the Facial Sculpting Clinic, on how healthy skin begins from the inside-out and how investing in yourself is a form of self-care. Talk us through your background. I am one hundred percent Italian. My medical background is in dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. After completing my degree in Milan, I worked in cosmetic dentistry and decided to move to London – this was 15 years ago. In London, I started my move into facial aesthetics. I always loved the art of symmetry and beauty, so facial aesthetics I believe has always been destined for me. How do you define face sculpting with a holistic approach? My approach is always holistic. When I analyse my patients, I consider the ageing process, I ensure to educate them on how and why we age so they understand the clinical procedures fully. My reports are very detailed, and I look to target all three skin layers: the epidermis at the top, the dermis (middle) and the subcutaneous layer underneath. I often rely on my anatomical knowledge from my dentistry background that helps me to identify areas to treat using the skeletal and dental form as my guide. From this analysis, I can create a very bespoke treatment plan to deliver beautiful results. What inspired you to transition from cosmetic dental surgery to facial aesthetics? It was a very natural pathway for me, I allowed myself to follow my passions for medicine, aesthetics and fashion. I found my dream job in facial aesthetics, where I can use my aesthetic creativity and my medical expertise. I love science and creativity. What emerging trends or technologies in aesthetics are you most excited about? First and foremost, I love the art of injectables, and I see daily how they can be used to sculpt and perfect the architecture of the face. There's a surge in popularity of injectables to address skin quality and focus on skin regeneration like polynucleotides, Profhilo, and skin boosters. I witness such a difference in improved skin quality when I integrate these regenerative treatments both for myself and for my patients. For me a good skin peel can address skin clarity. I Like the new AlumierMD Radiant TXA Peel– it truly helped me with my melasma. I turn to device-led treatments where skin laxity is a concern. Device-led treatments such as InMode Contoura and Endolift work beautifully to create a sculpting and lifting effect, the results of these can have a huge impact on the lower third of the face where we often witness skin laxity. 'For me, my work is all about bringing out someone's natural beauty. I am not changing anything, I am just correcting, balancing and enhancing' You focus on the 'Golden Ratio of Beauty' in your work. Could you explain how this concept guides your treatments? The Golden Ratio defines how the human eye perceives beauty. I follow the ratio rules when I am analysing a patient's facial structure. I firstly look for the symmetry for the three thirds of the face and combine this with a mathematical ratio approach to consider the features, then, I use my artistic side to create a beautiful and harmonious balance to the face. This is a delicate equation of mathematics and creative skill. For example, in practice, if a patient has a recessive or weak chin, I look at the ratio of the three thirds of the face and measure it with a ruler, then I consider the side profile to increase the projection to where it should align with the positioning of the lips. There is a very specific ratio between the top and bottom lips, if someone has a very thin upper lip, I work to increase the volume to create a balance to the proportions. On a malocclusion class 2 (where the chin is retracted), I increase the horizontal projection of the chin with fillers. In a malocclusion class 3 (where the chin is over projecting), I increase the lip projection with filler, with the goal to create a softer and more aligned profile and balance between the lips and chin. How do you ensure subtlety while achieving noticeable enhancements? For me, my work is all about bringing out someone's natural beauty. I am not changing anything, I am just correcting, balancing and enhancing. Working on the symmetry and facial structure and then addressing the canvas – ensuring the skin tone and clarity is also enhanced. How do you approach creating personalised treatment plans for your clients? It's all about understanding the ageing process and the structure of the skin. Assessing the facial contours and taking into consideration any malocclusions. Applying the golden ratio to create the perfect balance and then addressing any skin conditions. Why does gut health matter when it comes to good skin? Gut health is at the basis of skin health, skin conditions such as rosacea and acne are related to gut health and the skin can be a window to reflect what is going on, on the inside. I work closely with my patients to help their skin glow with health. I encourage a healthy lifestyle and work with my clients often via the GetHarley platform, to prescribe a tailored, clinical grade skincare routine. I also advocate daily supplements and work with the nutritionists at W-Wellness to ensure the right supplements are integrated into their daily routine. It is important my patients are working on their skin health from the inside and out. What advice would you offer someone considering their first aesthetic treatment? Do your research and ensure you are going to a qualified medical professional. Aesthetic treatments are medical treatments and are not to be undertaken lightly. I think it's also paramount that you align with the aesthetic of the practitioner. Study the before and after photos to see whether you like their eye. I also advise to have a consultation so you can see whether you feel at ease with the person and take the opportunity to ask all the questions to include downtime and address complications. This is The Self-Care Issue – what is your non-negotiable when it comes to your self-care routine? For me exercising and moving the body is important. Prioritising sleep and eating well and daily meditation for me is a must. – For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and Instagram Images: Supplied
