Samsung's Project Moohan XR headset could be similar to Vision Pro in more ways than one
Lanh Nguyen / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung will reportedly procure some displays for its upcoming Project Moohan headset from Sony. Sony also produced displays for the Apple Vision Pro. Samsung's display arm will also develop some of the headset's displays, in a bid to cut dependence on Sony. Samsung and Google are openly collaborating to create the first extended reality (XR) headset based on Android. The headset, codenamed Project Moohan, is expected to be unveiled some time in 2025, and Samsung has now taken a major step in its manufacturing. Korean outlet The Elec has revealed crucial bits about Samsung's upcoming XR headset, including plans to source some displays from Sony. Besides sourcing the initial batch of displays from Sony, Samsung Electronics also plans to commission its sister company, Samsung Display, for more displays. Per the report, Samsung will reportedly deploy tiny OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon), aka Micro Si OLED, displays for each eye. Compared to a traditional OLED, an OLEDoS offers increased sharpness by more tightly packing pixels along with a compact layout. Notably, Apple's Vision Pro also uses OLEDoS displays measuring 1.42 inches in size. With its XR headset, Samsung is reportedly using slightly smaller 1.3-inch displays per eye, but with a higher pixel density. By relying on two display manufacturers instead of one, Samsung may not only avert Sony's monopoly, but also gain the necessary expertise for supplying XR displays to other manufacturers in the future. Samsung has its ambitions in check In terms of demand, Samsung plans to ship only around 100,000 units of Project Moohan in 2025. The conservative approach dictates caution towards the new segment of products, especially with even Apple failing to truly appease fans with its $3,000 XR headset. Samsung's XR headset is not expected to be cheap in any regard, which may delay wider adoption. However, Samsung is not cutting back on its sense of luxury, as our editor C. Scott Brown witnessed at Google I/O 2025. Meanwhile, Samsung's experience with producing its own XR displays could help it refine other XR headsets in the pipeline, including devices codenamed 'Haean' and 'Jinju,' which, as per another report by ET News, could launch sometime next year. These might also be relatively cheaper than Project Moohan. Based on other rumors, the Galaxy XR headset is likely to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and have 16GB of RAM. Samsung is taking a more realistic approach to VR than Apple did
Samsung will most likely unveil its upcoming XR ( Extended Reality ) headset — named Project Moohan — on September 29 this year. Unlike Apple's approach for the Apple Vision Pro last year, however, Samsung is reportedly taking a much more realistic approach with its foray back into XR. According to a recent report ( translated source ), Samsung is only considering 100,000 units for the headset's initial launch. To put that into perspective, even the upcoming Galaxy G Fold — Samsung's tri-foldable phone — will have at least 200,000 units made for its own limited release. This is obviously due to the fact that the XR industry still remains a niche market. Furthermore, according to all of the news that has come in about the hardware powering it, Project Moohan will likely be quite expensive. It might not be as expensive as the Vision Pro, which was $3,499 at launch, but it won't be as affordable as the Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S either. Project Moohan seen at Galaxy Unpacked. | Image credit — PhoneArena Apple was convinced that the Vision Pro would sell out everywhere. Initially, the company thought that they would have sold a million units by the end of 2024. Now, in the middle of 2025, rough estimates point to around half a million headsets having been sold. Enterprise interest in the Vision Pro, something that Apple was heavily banking on, also dwindled soon after release. Samsung has already lowered sales expectations for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 due to the foldable industry's current state. The company has been smart enough to apply that same logic to Project Moohan. Despite that, and that fact that Project Moohan will only come out in Korea at first, I think that Samsung's headset has a lot of potential. If the company is able to provide an experience comparable to the Vision Pro at a lower cost, I can see the headset selling a lot better than its rival. And, obviously, it should come with support for VR games. That was a mistake that Apple made with its headset. Naturally, as it becomes cheaper to manufacture, we'll see more affordable successors pop up in the coming years. But whether it will be able to compete against the smart AR glasses that Meta and Apple are working on remains to be seen. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! Samsung is likely to launch its first Android XR headset soon and here is everything we know about it
Samsung's first Android XR headset might finally be close to its official debut. After months of appearances at different events, leaks and teaser videos, a new report out of South Korea suggests that Samsung will unveil the headset — currently codenamed Project Moohan — on September 29 in its home country. If this report is accurate, the headset will go on sale in South Korea on October 13, with a global rollout expected to follow soon after. Of course, Samsung hasn't confirmed any of this just will be Samsung's first Extended Reality (XR) headset, and it's being developed in partnership with Google. The headset will run Android XR, a version of Android built specifically for mixed-reality devices. Android XR is the result of a joint effort between Samsung and Google, much like their collaboration on recent versions of Wear OS for smartwatches. The new platform is also expected to come with built-in Gemini AI, giving users access to smart tools and contextual information right inside their headset. For example, imagine using Google Maps in a 3D interface or receiving AI-generated assistance while navigating or working in the hood, the headset will be powered by Qualcomm's XR2+ Gen 2 chip, which is reportedly built on Samsung's own 4nm process. This should help deliver smooth performance along with balanced power efficiency, both of which are key for wearable Even though it hasn't launched yet, the headset has been seen in public a few times. Samsung showed off early prototypes earlier this year at MWC 2024 and the Galaxy S25 launch, and is expected to tease it once again during its July Unpacked event alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip for features, the device is said to support both mixed reality and full virtual reality experiences. Samsung is reportedly focusing on making the headset lightweight and comfortable, though specific design details remain unknown. Rumours also hint at a sleek form factor that's more user-friendly than bulkier course, all of this comes as competition in the XR space grows. Apple's Vision Pro has already made the headlines with its high-end approach, but it also raised eyebrows for its price and bulky design. Samsung may be aiming to strike a better balance, offering top-tier performance and a good user experience, but at a more accessible price said, nothing is set in stone until Samsung makes it official. But if the latest reports are accurate, we might not have to wait long to see what Project Moohan is really all tuned to India Today Tech for all the latest on Samsung's upcoming Android XR headset.

Samsung to launch Android XR device to rival Apple Vision Pro in September: Report
Earlier this year, Samsung gave us a glimpse of Project Moohan, its Apple Vision Pro competitor. First teased during the second Galaxy Unpacked event in 2024, the extended reality headset was rumoured to launch sometime at the end of the year. However, Samsung's extended reality headset may hit markets sooner than expected. According to a report by the Korean publication Newspim, the company might launch the upcoming Android XR-powered headset at its very own event on September 9. It also suggests that the headset will be coming to South Korea a month later on October 13, with a global launch planned afterwards. Rumour also has it that Samsung will be showcasing the prototype and playing teaser videos of the Apple Vision Pro competitor at its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event, which is scheduled to take place in July. Compared to Meta and Apple's offerings, Samsung is reportedly working on fixing some issues associated with the technology, such as weight, battery life and performance. And while not much is known about Project Moohan's hardware except for the fact that it will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 chip and run on Android XR. In December last year, Google previewed Android XR – its new'open, unified platform for XR headsets and glasses.' Compared to the Apple Vision Pro and Meta's Quest range of mixed and virtual reality headsets, Google has confirmed that Android XR devices will support existing mobile and tablet apps on the Play Store 'right out of the box.' The tech giant is also building its very own XR version of popular apps like Maps, Photos and YouTube. For example, the Android XR version of Google Chrome will let users browse the internet with multiple windows, which will help enhance the headset's multitasking capabilities. Google also said that it will bring new AI-powered features backed by Gemini, which recently got multimodal capabilities. However, some important details like price, the product name and hardware specifications still remain under wraps, so we will have to wait a few months to get the full picture.

Here's when Samsung's XR headset is rumored to launch
Samsung's first XR headset, currently codenamed Project Moohan, has already been showcased by the company a bunch of times, but it's still not fully official. A new report out of Korea claims the company has now set a date for its unveiling: September 29. Then, it will become available for purchase on October 13, in Korea first. After the domestic market launch, it will gradually start to make its way to other places. This will be the first headset to use Android XR, which, as the name implies, is a version of Android made specifically for such headsets. Android XR itself was initially announced last year and is jointly developed by Google and Samsung, following their co-development success with the last few versions of Wear OS. You won't be surprised to find out that Android XR will include Google's Gemini AI. The Samsung headset is using Qualcomm's XR+ Gen 2 chipset, which is apparently manufactured by Samsung using a 4nm process. Before its full unveiling, the Samsung XR headset will be showcased once again at the company's Unpacked event next month, where it will announce the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7. Source (in Korean)
