Gardaí continue to question suspect in 'deliberate' hit-and-run killing of man in Balbriggan

GARDAÍ ARE CONTINUING to question a suspect arrested after a man was allegedly deliberately mowed down in a feud-related hit-and-run killing in north county Dublin. The victim, a man in his 30s, named locally as Mircea Rostas, died on Monday on Railway Street, Balbriggan shortly after 9pm. He had been hit by a car. Mircea was working as a delivery driver, it is understood. A video circulating on messaging apps showed the immediate aftermath – a young man can be seen with a hurley stating to onlookers there was 'beef' between groups in the area. Local people attempted to give first aid to the man who was lying lifeless on the street, while other people arrive in a car in a distressed state. Others stood nearby filming the scene. There was then a series of follow-up outbreaks of violence, with disturbances across the area including a fight between two groups at the local garda station. Sources have confirmed that the death is part of a feud between members of the Roma community in the area. It is understood there was a serious assault as part of the same dispute in recent weeks. Advertisement A major garda operation in the area after the incident led to the discovery of the black BMW car gardaí suspect was driven in the attack. Gardaí arrested a man in his 40s and he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act – he can be held for a maximum of 24 hours which excludes rest periods. Today, gardaí will make the decision on whether they have enough evidence to contact the Director of Public Prosecutions to seek a direction to charge or release the man. A post-mortem examination was carried out by the Office of the State Pathologist at Dublin City Mortuary, gardaí said. Gardaí have also said that the area was fully examined by the Garda Technical Bureau and Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The road has since reopened to traffic. Detectives have begun trawling for CCTV footage in the area and interviewing witnesses. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward, and have appealed for people not to share footage of the incident online. Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage, including dash-cam footage, from the area at the time are asked to make it available to Gardaí. Anyone with information is asked to contact Balbriggan Garda Station on 01 666 4500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station. Woman allegedly abducted from Kildare home is rescued by gardaí

Detectives are investigating if the suspected kidnapping was 'directed' by another woman A woman was allegedly abducted from a home in Kildare and held captive for around 90 minutes before being rescued by gardaí in south Dublin. Detectives are investigating if the suspected kidnapping was directed by another woman over a personal dispute with the victim. During the woman's ordeal her captors warned her they would take her to a cemetery in the capital while also demanding money from her. Gardaí were alerted to the incident that began in the Castletown area of Celbridge, Co Kildare, at around 10pm on Monday. They received reports that a woman had forced her way into a house in the area before dragging the victim out. The victim was bundled into a car containing two male passengers before it was driven away at high speed. An alert for the Volkswagen involved was put out to gardaí in the eastern region and Dublin, notifying them of the suspected kidnapping. Officers had also received information that the group were planning to bring the woman to a cemetery in south Dublin. Around 90 minutes after the incident in Celbridge, gardaí came across the suspect vehicle in the Tallaght area. It was brought to a halt by local units and the woman was found unharmed in the back seat and freed. Demands for money were made from the victim Two of the occupants, the female driver and a male passenger, both aged in their 30s, were arrested and taken to a garda station in the eastern region. They were both being held last night on suspicion of false imprisonment. They can be questioned for up to 24 hours before they must either be charged or released from custody pending a file being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The offence of false imprisonment carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment on conviction. Photo: Stock image News in 90 Seconds - June 25th Gardaí are also investigating if the female suspect was the instigator of the incident. A source said: 'The suspicion is that the female suspect was the instigator in this and is essentially the chief suspect, the one directing this. 'Demands for money were made from the victim, and this is being treated as a targeted incident. 'Thankfully, gardaí intervened before the woman was physically harmed and the gardaí involved have to be commended for bringing this to a safe conclusion very quickly.' A garda spokesperson said they were continuing to investigate the alleged false imprisonment incident on Monday night.

Sergeant Chris Cahil arrested Thomas Heising of Frankfield Terrace, Summerhill South, Cork, on the night Saturday, June 21, and charged him on the following day with causing criminal damage. On Monday the defendant was brought before Judge Mary Dorgan at Cork District Court. There was no objection to bail being granted to the accused. Judge Dorgan adjourned the case until July 28, on the application of Sergeant Aisling Murphy, to allow time for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions. Bail Bail conditions require him to sign on twice weekly at Anglesea Street garda station between the hours of 9am and 9pm, reside at the Summerhill South address and stay away from the environs of the constituency office of An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin at 137 Evergreen Road, Turner's Cross, Cork. He is also required to have no contact, direct or indirect, including on social medial platforms, with An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin TD, or any staff members of the constituency office and engage in no commentary, including on social media platforms, in respect of matters before the court. These were the conditions required by the prosecution. Shane Collins-Daly, solicitor, said the accused man agreed to all of these conditions. Charge The charge states that: 'On May 27 at 137 Evergreen Road, Turner's Cross, Cork, he did without lawful excuse damage property, to wit, the walls, door and windowsill of 137 Evergreen Road, intending to damage such property or being reckless as to whether such property would be damaged, contrary to Section 2(1) of the Criminal Damage Act, 1991.' It was previously reported that the office was vandalised with the words related to Israel and Palestine including the words, 'Zionist pawn', written on a window, as well as red paint daubed on the walls.
