Proton ends first six months of 2025 with increased market share

PETALING JAYA: Proton has closed its books for the first six months of the year with an increased share of the Malaysian automotive market. Group sales in June amounted to 11,069 units, a slight increase over the same month in 2024, while total year-to-date (YTD) sales totalled 72,156 units, the second highest in the industry. Market share for the month is estimated to be at 20.7%, an increase of 1.1% over the previous month and 1.2% ahead of the YTD figure of 19.5%. Conversely, total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have closed at 53,500 units in June, a reduction of 21% compared to the TIV figure of 68.007 in May. One of the constants for Proton's sales performance has been the strong performance of its B-segment SUV model, the Proton X50. Launched in October 2020, over 140,000 units have been sold in Malaysia and overseas markets, firmly cementing its position as the sales in its class for five years in a row. For June 2025, 1,657 units of the Proton X50 were sold, keeping it ahead of all competitors in the class. The total includes 353 units for the export market where the model accounts for 47% of the company's total export volume. For the first half of the year 11,361 units have been sold, marking an increase of 11.3% over the first six months of 2024. While sales of the current model remain strong, Proton is launching an all-new Proton X50 this month. Depressed market conditions in June resulted in lower sales compared to May but there were three Proton models that ended the month as segment leaders. One of these was the Proton X50 while the other two were the Proton X90 and Proton S70, which continued to lead the D-segment SUV and C-segment sedan markets, respectively. The model with the highest sales growth figure for the first half of 2025 is the Proton X70. 'After performing strongly in May, automotive sales dropped by 15,000 units in June due to external factors such as rising tensions in the Middle East and the expansion of the scope of SST affecting buyer sentiment. Despite this, Proton managed to outperform the market to increase our market share percentage ahead of a busy second half of the year where we have a full slate of events and model introductions. With new models arriving in our showrooms, the outlook is for the company to have a stronger second half to 2025 as we seek to increase sales for our ICE and EV offerings,' said Proton Edar deputy CEO Zhang Qiang.

Proton, Grab Malaysia expand partnership with more car models and e-hailing perks

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd and Grab Malaysia have expanded their partnership to offer more car models, including the Proton S70 and X-Series, with added benefits for Grab drivers. In a statement, Proton said the partnership builds on the success of the 'Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners' campaign launched in November 2024, which has so far generated 220 leads and resulted in 148 Proton Saga registrations. The continued collaboration underscores the strong demand for Proton's models in the e-hailing segment and reinforces the shared goal of modernising Malaysia's ride-hailing with affordable and reliable cars. Driver-partners can now choose from a wider range of Proton models, including GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-Seater) options. The partnership also offers up to RM13,000 in cash rebates, a 5% service discount for two years or 40,000 km, and RM500 in fuel support to ease initial ownership costs. 'Our strengthened partnership with Grab Malaysia marks a crucial step in empowering the e-hailing sector. Proton is thrilled to make our S70 and premium X-series models more accessible to Grab drivers. 'For gig workers, this comprehensive programme extends beyond exclusive benefits to assurance of driving Proton cars. Its reliability and affordable maintenance costs are important factors for those who use cars as their primary working tools,' Proton Edar deputy director sales, Ong Chee Wooi said. Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia's director of country operations and mobility, Rashid Shukor, said this collaboration made it easier for its driver-partners to access vehicles, enabling them to earn and support their families while meeting the growing demand for rides. 'With the expansion of our partnership – now extending to the S70 and premium X-series models —drivers now have the chance to elevate their driving experience, upgrade their vehicles, and cater to an even broader consumer base. We look forward to continuing this journey together to build a future where opportunities are accessible to all."

Proton-Grab tie-up grows stronger with S70, premium X-Series for E-Hailing segment

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd and Grab Malaysia have expanded their strategic partnership to further support the e-hailing community. The collaboration now includes more Proton model options, such as the Proton S70 and premium X-Series models, providing Grab driver-partners with greater variety as they continue earning on the platform. This builds on the success of the "Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners" campaign launched in Nov 2024, which has so far generated 220 leads and recorded 148 vehicle registrations for the Proton Saga. According to Proton, the continued partnership reflects strong demand for its vehicles in the e-hailing segment and supports the shared goal of modernising Malaysia's ride-hailing industry with affordable and reliable cars. Driver-partners can now choose from a wider selection of Proton models, including those under the GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-Seater) categories. Proton April sales up 14.7pct, boosted by e.MAS 7 EV debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd's sales increased 14.7 per cent in April, led by the brand's first electric vehicle (EV) model 7. Proton's group sales closed the month at 12,692 units, which also pushed the company's market share to 20.8 per cent. In comparison, total industry volume (TIV) for April is estimated to have grown by just 1.8 per cent year-on-year to 60,886 units and declined 16.3 per cent from March, reflecting slower sales during the festive period. "The strong results have strengthened the company's grip on second position in the overall automotive sales table in Malaysia," it said in a statement. "This comes at a time when offerings and price cuts from new brands have created an extremely competitive market environment, leaving car buyers with a wide range of options," it added. The 7 has seen its numbers climb each month since its launch in December last year. The trend continued in April as the model breached the 800-unit barrier by achieving 863 units. This brought year-to-date (YTD) sales to 2,716 units. Proton said this positioned the model as the best-selling EV in the country and the Proton brand in second place for overall EV sales despite currently having only one model in its range. "More importantly, the result means EVs now account for six per cent of overall Proton sales," said Proton. Proton Edar chief executive officer Roslan Abdullah said automotive sales in Malaysia continue to be robust with TIV in 2025 sits behind the record- setting pace from the previous year. "Our figures show the deficit currently stands at five per cent, which is respectable after two big festive periods in the first four months of the year. "With many new models slated for introduction over the next eight months, expect the gap to shrink as buyers are presented with a bevy of new options," he said. Meanwhile, the Proton X50 took the lead in the B-segment SUV market last month. A total of 2,389 units were sold in April, its highest volume for 2025. YTD sales climbed to 7,506 units as well as 420 units ahead of YTD sales from the previous year. The Proton X90 remains the default choice for buyers looking for a D-segment SUV, with 194 units sold in April, bringing YTD sales to 873 units. The Proton S70 remains as the dominant C-segment sedan model in Malaysia with another 1,716 units sold in April to boost its YTD total to 6,181 units. As for Proton X70, its YTD sales stood at 2,839 units after it sold 682 units last month. As for the other models, the Proton Saga achieved 5,213 sales last month, the Proton Persona finished the month as the second ranked B-segment sedan with 1,328 units sold while the Proton Iriz posted 290 sales and currently sits fourth for B-segment hatchback sales. Proton also saw export growth gathered momentum in April as the company had its best month for export sales in 2025. A total of 520 units were exported last month led by the Proton X50, Proton Saga and Proton 7, the latter being previewed at The Car Expo in Singapore during the first weekend of May. "Export sales remain a vital area of focus for Proton as we view it as the main driver of sales growth in the future. We continue to lay the groundwork for our expansion by adding our EV offerings to our export markets, which will help keep us ahead of the curve when EV adoption takes off overseas," added Roslan.
