Proton all-new X50 draws 5,000 bookings in 10 days ahead of launch
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd has received 5,000 bookings for its all-new Proton X50 just 10 days after opening orders on July 5, averaging one booking every three minutes. This accounts for half of the 10,000 early bird units under a special launch promo, which includes a RM1,000 cash rebate, a limited edition Touch 'n Go card and an exclusive 'Gempak! Deal'. Full pricing will be revealed at the official launch on the evening of July 24, Proton said in a statement today. Proton Edar Sdn Bhd deputy chief executive officer Zhang Qiang said the strong response underscores Malaysians' enthusiasm for the model. "To build on this momentum, we'll begin offering test drives at our outlets from July 19 so customers can experience the X50 firsthand," he said. Zhang said Proton's Tanjong Malim plant has ramped up production to ensure immediate availability. "Our goal is to have at least 5,000 units ready for registration by end-August to minimise waiting times," he added. The new Proton X50, aimed at buyers with active lifestyles, features refreshed styling, a more powerful engine, and an upgraded 14.6-inch infotainment display. It also debuts Bahasa Melayu voice recognition and an enhanced Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System with semi-autonomous driving functions.

BYD Sime Motors hints Atto 2 launch in Malaysia, compact EV matches Proton X50 in size
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — BYD Atto 2 is coming soon to Malaysia, according to several teasers that BYD Sime Motors has published on social media. These teasers depict selected sections of the car, and even though they are masked, their features are visible enough that we can identify that they are images of Atto 2. We have taken the liberty to match the official press images of the electric compact SUV with the teasers: However, none of the teasers that BYD Sime Motors has published so far have revealed the launch date of the new EV. On a related note, we are also still unsure of the relationship between the capybara and Atto 2. If you are interested in the new EV, you are already able to register your interest through the BYD Sime Motors official website. Known as the Yuan Up in China, there is only one main variant of Atto 2 for the international market that we know of so far. As noted by the European specs sheet, this variant carries a 45.12kWh BYD Blade LFP battery, which allows it to deliver up to 312km of WLTP-rated range. The Atto 2 also features a 130kW (174hp) electric motor that produces 290Nm of torque. The specs sheet noted that the EV can go from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds, while it also has a maximum speed of 160km/h. Physically, the BYD Atto 2 size is quite close to the Proton X50 as the EV is 4,290mm long, 1,770mm wide, and 1,570mm tall. At 2,620mm, its wheelbase is slightly shorter than Atto 3 (2,720mm) and even Dolphin (2,700mm). The EV also has a kerb weight of 1,570kg, which puts it nicely in between those two BYD EVs. When it comes to boot size, the Atto 2 offers 400L of space, which can be expanded further to 1,340L once you fold down its rear seats. For the European market, it comes standard with an 11kW 3-phase AC on-board charger, and it takes around 6 hours and 12 minutes for the Atto 2 to be fully charged from empty. The EV also supports a DC charging speed of up to 65kW, which allows it to be charged from 10% to 80% through DC charging in 37 minutes. Over in Europe, the Atto 2 is available in two trims, including Active and Boost, which mainly differ in terms of selected comfort and tech features. For example, Atto 2 Boost comes with a 12.8-inch infotainment display and 8 audio speakers, while the Atto 2 Active has a smaller 10.1-inch display and 6 audio speakers. The Atto 2 Boost also has heated steering and front seats alongside electrically folding side mirrors, monochrome ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera, front parking radars, and a 15W smartphone wireless charger. — SoyaCincau

#NSTviral: Video of exchange at zebra crossing sparks debate on road manners
KUALA LUMPUR: A video of a motorcyclist stopping at a zebra crossing in the city, only to be honked at by another driver has drawn attention to road manners and the importance of respecting pedestrian crossings in the city. In a video posted by Facebook user driving4dummies, a short reel depicted the motorcyclist giving way to pedestrians before being confronted by a driver. The driver, driving a Proton X50 pulls up beside him, winds down the window, and questions why he stopped, claiming it was unnecessary. "He then repeatedly asks whether he had hit the motorcyclist, suggesting there was no need to give way unless contact was made," he said. Despite the confrontation, the user remains composed and explains that vehicles are legally required to stop when pedestrians are waiting to cross. The driver, however, continues to press the point before eventually driving off. In a caption accompanying the video, driving4dummies urges fellow road users to observe the rules and stop at pedestrian crossings. "I was honked at. I was scolded. But I still stopped. Because I know… every crossing carries a life. "Sometimes it's an elderly person. Sometimes a small child. And sometimes, it's someone I know personally. We stop not because of the rules, but out of respect" he said in the caption accompanying the video. The incident ended on a conciliatory note where in a follow-up post, the Facebook user said he later met the driver, who offered an apology. "I have a chance to meet Brother X50. We greet and forgive, with an open heart. "Maybe through the incident with this Brother X50, we can all pay attention to the zebra crossing issue in Malaysia, a place where there are many people who find it difficult to cross and all this time there are many that 'suffers in silence'. "I also call on the crowd to stop attacking and bullying this X50 brother. Let's not do the same thing but online anyway," he wrote.

Proton ends first six months of 2025 with increased market share
PETALING JAYA: Proton has closed its books for the first six months of the year with an increased share of the Malaysian automotive market. Group sales in June amounted to 11,069 units, a slight increase over the same month in 2024, while total year-to-date (YTD) sales totalled 72,156 units, the second highest in the industry. Market share for the month is estimated to be at 20.7%, an increase of 1.1% over the previous month and 1.2% ahead of the YTD figure of 19.5%. Conversely, total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have closed at 53,500 units in June, a reduction of 21% compared to the TIV figure of 68.007 in May. One of the constants for Proton's sales performance has been the strong performance of its B-segment SUV model, the Proton X50. Launched in October 2020, over 140,000 units have been sold in Malaysia and overseas markets, firmly cementing its position as the sales in its class for five years in a row. For June 2025, 1,657 units of the Proton X50 were sold, keeping it ahead of all competitors in the class. The total includes 353 units for the export market where the model accounts for 47% of the company's total export volume. For the first half of the year 11,361 units have been sold, marking an increase of 11.3% over the first six months of 2024. While sales of the current model remain strong, Proton is launching an all-new Proton X50 this month. Depressed market conditions in June resulted in lower sales compared to May but there were three Proton models that ended the month as segment leaders. One of these was the Proton X50 while the other two were the Proton X90 and Proton S70, which continued to lead the D-segment SUV and C-segment sedan markets, respectively. The model with the highest sales growth figure for the first half of 2025 is the Proton X70. 'After performing strongly in May, automotive sales dropped by 15,000 units in June due to external factors such as rising tensions in the Middle East and the expansion of the scope of SST affecting buyer sentiment. Despite this, Proton managed to outperform the market to increase our market share percentage ahead of a busy second half of the year where we have a full slate of events and model introductions. With new models arriving in our showrooms, the outlook is for the company to have a stronger second half to 2025 as we seek to increase sales for our ICE and EV offerings,' said Proton Edar deputy CEO Zhang Qiang.
