Mahathir Turns 100: Still Very Much Tun-ed In

Subscribe to our FREE As two-time former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad prepares to blow out the candles on his 100th birthday, most of us are left wondering: how is this man still going like he's half his own age? While many people slow down in their golden years, Tun M has thrown the idea of 'retirement' out the window. Let's have a look at how the elder statesman has continued to impress people, from his younger days to his (very) senior years. He started a blog… in his 80s Most 80-somethings are still learning how to forward WhatsApp messages, but not Tun M. At the age of 82, he launched a personal blog called ' Still driving himself in his 90s You might expect someone like Tun M to be chauffeured around, especially while he's in his 90s. But no, he has long insisted on driving himself even while in office – and long after. He has a keen interest in cars, as evident in various videos found on on the internet. For example, he was spotted driving a pink Cadillac just last year: Or, what about the time he drove a Proton X70 on the Sepang International Circuit, reaching up to 150kmh! He opened the first Malay-owned private clinic in Kedah Before 'Dr. M' became Prime Minister he was a medical doctor with his very own clinic. Tun M opened Klinik Maha in Alor Setar, Kedah, long before stepping into politics. While he no longer practices medicine, the clinic still stands. And yes, he has delivered babies, treated illnesses, and likely written as many prescriptions as political speeches (that's just a guess, so don't quote us on it). Fun fact: Klinik Maha, established in 1957 (the same year Malaysia gained Independence), was the first Malay-owned private clinic in Kedah. Maha Klinik in 2020. Image: Google Malaysia's (arguably) most meme-able man For a man who has embraced social media, even TikTok, it's no surprise that Tun M has become one of Malaysia's most meme-ified figures. There are memes of him jogging past politicians, memes of him 'resetting Malaysia like a router,' and memes asking how he's still standing while others half his age are tired. And through it all, Tun Mahathir has taken the memes with quiet grace – likely with a little chuckle and a blog post. Image: myy6179_splrkn via 9GAG The master of comebacks And we don't mean that he's particularly skilled at returning jokes or insults. What we mean to say is at 92 years old, Tun M made history again – returning as the oldest head of government in the world. No other leader has ever made a comeback like that. While we promised no politics, this one's too epic to ignore – it's really unbelievably wild that he managed to do this. Tun M circa 1981 vs 2025. Image: (left), Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad Facebook (right) He launched Malaysia's first car brand In 1983, Tun M unveiled Proton, Malaysia's first national car. It wasn't just a car – it was a symbol of national pride and industrial progress. Proton lives on today, with Tun often spotted driving newer models himself. Image: Carsome Married his medical school sweetheart, and they're still together Tun Mahathir met Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali in medical school. More than 60 years later, they're still side by side – Malaysia's most enduring power couple. She's been his partner through everything: medicine, politics, parenthood, and public life. Image: Perdana Leadership Foundation Facebook He outlived seven kings Yes, really. Tun M has outlived seven Yang di-Pertuan Agong since he first entered Parliament in 1964. His longevity is not just personal, it's practically historical. What's his secret? It may just be the Berocca he takes daily, but we can't be too sure. Proton ends first six months of 2025 with increased market share

PETALING JAYA: Proton has closed its books for the first six months of the year with an increased share of the Malaysian automotive market. Group sales in June amounted to 11,069 units, a slight increase over the same month in 2024, while total year-to-date (YTD) sales totalled 72,156 units, the second highest in the industry. Market share for the month is estimated to be at 20.7%, an increase of 1.1% over the previous month and 1.2% ahead of the YTD figure of 19.5%. Conversely, total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have closed at 53,500 units in June, a reduction of 21% compared to the TIV figure of 68.007 in May. One of the constants for Proton's sales performance has been the strong performance of its B-segment SUV model, the Proton X50. Launched in October 2020, over 140,000 units have been sold in Malaysia and overseas markets, firmly cementing its position as the sales in its class for five years in a row. For June 2025, 1,657 units of the Proton X50 were sold, keeping it ahead of all competitors in the class. The total includes 353 units for the export market where the model accounts for 47% of the company's total export volume. For the first half of the year 11,361 units have been sold, marking an increase of 11.3% over the first six months of 2024. While sales of the current model remain strong, Proton is launching an all-new Proton X50 this month. Depressed market conditions in June resulted in lower sales compared to May but there were three Proton models that ended the month as segment leaders. One of these was the Proton X50 while the other two were the Proton X90 and Proton S70, which continued to lead the D-segment SUV and C-segment sedan markets, respectively. The model with the highest sales growth figure for the first half of 2025 is the Proton X70. 'After performing strongly in May, automotive sales dropped by 15,000 units in June due to external factors such as rising tensions in the Middle East and the expansion of the scope of SST affecting buyer sentiment. Despite this, Proton managed to outperform the market to increase our market share percentage ahead of a busy second half of the year where we have a full slate of events and model introductions. With new models arriving in our showrooms, the outlook is for the company to have a stronger second half to 2025 as we seek to increase sales for our ICE and EV offerings,' said Proton Edar deputy CEO Zhang Qiang.

Malaysian dad in tears after 11 children pool together to buy him new SUV, Malaysia News

A Malaysian father was moved to tears after his 11 children surprised him with a brand new car. The emotional scene was captured in a viral TikTok video uploaded by user Azzerruleyoung on Tuesday (June 17), which has since garnered nearly 10 million views. In the two-minute clip, a woman is seen covering the elderly man's eyes as he fishes a car key out of a gift box. He is then led out of his seat as his family members look on elatedly. As he touches the exterior of the Proton X70, the man — who still has his eyes covered — realises the present and appears overwhelmed with emotion, squatting for a moment as his children guide him into the driver seat. [embed] When his eyes are uncovered and it is finally revealed that he is sitting in a brand-new SUV, the father bursts out crying while his children clap and shower confetti on him and the car. He appears to still be in disbelief as he alights, covering his face and staring at the vehicle while his wife hugs and comforts him. In the post caption, Azzerruleyoung wrote that the SUV is a gift from the 11 siblings for Father's Day as well as their parents' 38th wedding anniversary. According to 8world, the user also said in the comments that his father only had an old motorcycle which he used to ferry the family around. The moment has left several netizens emotional, with some commenting that they had teared up while watching the video. "Am I the only one who cried seeing this? When will I be able to be like this and make my parents happy while they are still around?" said one user. "Friends who don't have siblings, don't be stressed. Giving a car is just one method. The key is to make your parents happy. Bring back the happy smiles of those who sometimes lose time building a family for us," another wrote. [[nid:718958]]

M'sian siblings surprise parents with brand new Proton X70

It's not every day that siblings come together to gift their parents a car — let alone a gleaming new Proton X70. But that's exactly what one big-hearted Malaysian family did, and their heartfelt gesture has since gone viral across social media. In celebration of two major milestones — Father's Day and their parents' 38th wedding anniversary — 11 siblings pooled their resources to surprise their beloved 'Abah' and 'Ma' with the ultimate gift of gratitude. In a touching TikTok post, one of the siblings shared: 'A gift from us, your 11 children, who were raised by your hands, Abah & Ma. In conjunction with Father's Day and your 38th anniversary together, this is for you.' The emotional video showed the moment their father was led outside to see the Proton X70, beautifully decorated with red ribbons. Visibly moved, he teared up before stepping into the car and admiring the generous gift. Netizens were quick to flood the comments with praise and admiration. 'Alhamdulillah, the process was made easy for the 11 siblings to buy a car for their parents. With a RM10,000 deposit, each of them chipped in around RM1,000. The monthly repayment comes up to just about RM100 per person. Smart planning — and more importantly, solid teamwork among siblings,' wrote user AS. Another comment by Arif Haqim read: 'You are all amazing children. You are truly blessed to be able to bring joy to your parents. The reward and blessings for that are immense. May Allah bless all of you, dear siblings.'
