What's the score on ‘score'?
The courtship rituals of the Treasury and the Office for Budget Responsibility last ten weeks. The consummation is a fiscal event, such as the Budget coming in the autumn, if we survive. Eligible young ladies used to have dance cards on which to enter the names of their suitors. The Treasury has a scorecard on which its proposed measures are drawn up for the OBR to score. The analogy is with the cricket field rather than the ballroom. The OBR score indicates its forecast for spending, receipts and public debt. It also takes into account knock-on effects of a policy change. This is called dynamic scoring. I had to ask Veronica about this and, since it's years since she split up with her unsatisfactory City trader, she might have got it wrong. In 2021 the OBR had to explain that the dynamic effect of a rise in tobacco duty was so large that 80 per cent of the increase was lost to the Treasury. After the increase, people changed their behaviour: some gave up cigarettes, some rolled their own and not a few got cigarettes from illegal sources. Is that where all those Turkish barbers come in? There was a response that benefited government coffers when it cut the top rate of tax from 50 to 45 per cent in 2012. The static effect would have cost the Treasury £3.8 billion. But behavioural changes, such as hours worked, meant the OBR's estimate of the loss of revenue was only £100 million. Dynamic scoring shares an etymology with the score cut in pork skin to make crackling – from a productive ancient Germanic word that also gives us shear, shard and share (used for ploughing). Dynamic scoring is also a variant of the scoring done by our Anglo-Saxon forebears cutting a score in a stick every time they'd counted 20 sheep. 'The days of our age are threescore years and ten,' says the Psalm, 'and though men be so strong that they come to fourscore years, yet is their strength then but labour and sorrow.' We know the score.

A Love Supreme, Famous Spiegeltent, Edinburgh ★★★★★ John Coltrane regarded his suite A Love Supreme as a gift to God, responding to the spiritual awakening he had experienced some years before. In this 60th anniversary celebration of its release it would have been impossible to replicate the intense spiritual and cultural circumstances surrounding Coltrane at the time. However, this quartet of four of Scotland's finest new generation jazz players – saxophonist Harry Weir, pianist Fergus McCreadie, double-bassist Ewan Hastie and drummer Graham Costello – created a memorably powerful salute to a landmark work in jazz history. Harry Weir | Contributed Echoing the original, a gong ushered in Weir's tenor sax as it sounded the unignorable clarion call that opens Acknowledgement, the first of the suite's four movements, and bassist Hastie struck up the famous, almost hypnotic four-note motif, saxophone expounding over it with increasing vehemence before Weir broke off to lead the liturgy-like 'love supreme' chant that echoed the bass line. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The following Resolution worked up powerful turbulence with Weir's forceful attack and pianist McCreadie embarking on a dazzling keyboard excursion, while an industrious drum break led into a thrilling Pursuance, driven by racing bass, with McCreadie releasing further keyboard fireworks, saxophone fairly baying at times with Weir himself urging things on with the odd yell. Another drum link led to the suite's final, stately exposition of Psalm, opened by extensively ranging and eloquent bass musings from Hastie before the saxophone sounded out once more, at times growling, at others blistering, over dramatically rumbling toms and cymbal crashes, drawing things toward a mighty conclusion.

Malema slammed for singing 'Kill The Boer' at mass funeral
Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Julius Malema has been criticised for singing Kill The Boer at the mass funeral for those who died in a bus crash earlier this week. Ten people – EFF members – died in a head-on collision near Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal, while returning home after a June 16 rally in Durban on Monday. Malema has been condemned by his critics – including US President Donald Trump and the world's richest man, Elon Musk – for his decision to back the controversial struggle song. On Sunday, Julius Malema attended the mass funeral of 10 EFF members who were killed in a KZN bus crash. The bus tragically collided with a truck on the R34 near Ulundi in KZN. The funeral – dubbed the June 16 battalion – took place in Vryheid and was attended by the party leader and his leadership. Malema told the crowd of those who had died in the horror crash: 'They died while in pursuit of life. They were travelling with hope in their hearts. But the journey that should have taken them toward opportunity ended in tragedy.' Malema – who used the opportunity to mobilise EFF party members – promised to build a house for the families of those who had died. As he does with many rallies, Malema closed the event by singing Kill The Boer. However, his decision left many South Africans on social media questioning the timing and choice of song. @LangelihleMaph1: 'If there's no connection between these deaths and the Boer, why sing the song?' @MariaJacob49230: 'No respect for the dead, Julius Malema? You're at a funeral, not a political rally! This has been an occasion for a Psalm.' @muzizaks: 'What shameful display for lack of sense of occasion'. Meanwhile, Gayton McKenzie has condemned the EFF and Julius Malema for their decision to sing Kill The Boer. Speaking at the welcoming party for the Proteas at OR Tambo International Airport, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture claimed that the anti-Apartheid song had no place in modern-day society. He said of the national cricket team, which recently won the ICC World Test Championships: 'This country has amazing sportspeople, and it is the greatest sporting nation in the world. If you do not agree with me, or if you want to argue with me, I do not argue with idiots. EFF leader Julius Malema and party leadership in Free State. Image: X/@EFFSouthAfrica 'Today, we had Black, Indian, White, and Coloured kids singing the Temba Bavuma song. Why should we worry about nonsense like Kill The Boer? These players [Proteas] will go places because we have the best team ever. 'Those people who are singing the Kill The Boer song are idiots'. He added in an X post: 'They are the biggest idiots, the current South Africa has no place for such a song. It has no value and contributes nothing towards the SA we are trying to construct.
