A case of elderly ‘Puan Sri' who is also Datuk Seri felt ‘entitled' to park her car in neighbour's porch
'I AM a Puan Sri! I also (personally) have a Datuk Seri title'. One wonders if those acquired titles allows a person to behave in a certain manner, including the right to park in a neighbour's porch! In a video that has been making the rounds on social media courtesy of Penang Indian Networks Facebook page, an elderly lady is seen taking umbrage at being asked to move the vehicle. While details of the incident remain sketchy, it does highlight a very negative trait among some Malaysians – that of throwing their weight around because they belong to the 'titled' class. That this matriarch was further flexing her entitled muscle by pulling on her police 'cable' to sort out matters further paints her in an unflattering light. The video which has since garnered 7.4K likes, 4.9K comments, 1.9K shares and 1.3 million views at the time of writing can be watched here. Many were unimpressed by the manner in which this lady threw her weight about by claiming she and her husband were titled individuals. That this even came with parking privileges surprised more than a few. One commenter even applauded this lady's energetic performance in giving an 'ala-TED Talk' lecture! The cable pulling with the cops also left a bad impression of this aunty who is clearly used to having things her own way even though she claimed 'we're decent people'. However, a few cautioned that nobody actually knows what sparked the confrontation. There are always two sides to the story. A few things this video brings up. First and foremost, the act of parking in neighbour's porch is a no-no (not to mention parking in front of someone's main gate). In Malaysia, parking in a neighbour's porch is generally illegal under the Road Transport Act 1987. Specifically, Section 48(1) states that any driver causing an obstruction or inconvenience to other road users is liable for a fine and/or imprisonment. Parking in a way that blocks access to a neighbour's property or obstructs the road falls under this category. Obviously, owning a title does not confer immunity from it. Secondly, the details of what caused this quarrel is unknown. But this video highlights the need for proper decorum and civility as anything and everything can now be captured on today's smart phone. Nevertheless, this elderly aunty's boasting of titles and belligerently claiming 'you can be from China, I'm from London' has painted an incredibly poor picture of her regardless of what sparked the confrontation. 'We aren't loafers' she can be heard proclaiming loudly, but this clip has made her look even worse. Online infamy is surely not what she bargained for. – June 8, 2025

House speaker Puan warns Indonesian govt against whitewashing history
Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati (left) handing over a document on the government's response to the deliberation of the mother and child welfare bill to House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani (right) during a House plenary session at the Senayan legislative complex in Jakarta in a file photo fromn June 4, 2024. - Antara JAKARTA: Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani has warned Culture Minister Fadli Zon, who currently leads the job of rewriting Indonesia's national history, against what she called promoting a distorted version of the country's past. Puan, the granddaughter of the country's founding president Sukarno, said that in rewriting the country's history, the Fadli-led initiative must present a comprehensive look into the past instead of promoting what the government regards as fitting with its political agenda. "What matters the most is never to engage in an obfuscation or erasing some parts of history and failing to straighten up that history," Puan said as quoted by Antara. Earlier on Monday, House Commission X overseeing education and culture held a hearing with activists and historians to get their take on the government's plan to rewrite the history books, an endeavour that Minister Fadli expected to wrap up before the celebration of the country's 80th Independence Day anniversary in August this year. The activists and historians have rejected the controversial plan, warning that it could whitewash the country's darkest chapters and serve only the interests of President Prabowo Subianto. A former Army general, Prabowo has faced long-standing allegations of human rights abuses taking place in the late 1990s, claims that he has consistently denied. The Culture Ministry pressed ahead with the work to rewrite the country's history despite claims from lawmakers that they were not consulted about the plan. Commission X chairperson Hetifah Sjaifudin said lawmakers had not yet been briefed by the ministry about the plan. "To be very honest, we haven't had the opportunity to have a direct meeting on what issues will be revised or how the process will take place," Hetifah told reporters on Monday. - The Jakarta Post/ANN

Malaysian UN troops in Lebanon remain safe
JOHOR BARU: Malaysian peacekeepers in Lebanon under the UN mission remain safe, despite security threats in the region, says Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan. He confirmed that no high-risk incidents have been reported involving the Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) 850-12, deployed since November last year. "We are concerned about possible uncontrolled actions by conflicting parties that could lead to them opening fire in our operational area," he said. Contingency measures, including bunker construction, have been taken to ensure troop safety, he said. He spoke after attending a gathering at Dewan Serigala, Ulu Tiram Camp, with families of Malbatt 850-12 personnel. Also present was his wife Puan Sri Hartiah Hamzah, who is chairman of the Armed Forces Family Welfare Body (Bakat). During the event, families were honoured and allowed live video calls with their loved ones in Lebanon. Contributions and welfare aid were distributed, especially to those with family members with health issues. Hafizuddeain said Malbatt 850-12 will return in stages by November and be replaced by Malbatt 850-13. He said that during their deployment so far, personnel have been allowed to take annual leave, and they have now begun to go on a month-long leave in stages. Malbatt 850-13 will include about 850 personnel, with a Royal Brunei Armed Forces platoon. "The new team will be formed soon and is currently in the process of selecting the commander and staff officers. "The unit selected for Malbatt 850-13 is the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment based in Sungai Ara, Penang. The team will be assembled next month to undergo integrated force training in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, he said. Meanwhile, Nur Fazliana Mazli, 33, said she supports her husband Corporal Muhammad Fared Amran's mission in Lebanon, despite their year-long separation. Their five-year-old child, who has a heart condition, is undergoing treatment. "I told my husband not to worry about us here and to focus on his duty," she said.
