GMC steps up plastic ban campaign under Swachh Guntur initiative
GUNTUR: As part of the Swachh Guntur initiative, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Saturday intensified efforts to enforce the ban on single-use plastic through an awareness rally and public outreach programmes. Guntur Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra, who led the rally from NTR Municipal Stadium to Lodge Centre, warned of strict action against the use and sale of plastic, citing its harmful effects on public health and urban drainage systems. At the event, officials inaugurated cloth bag vending machines near Gandhi Park and NTR Stadium to promote eco-friendly alternatives. Awareness drives will be held across the city to educate residents on the impact of plastic waste. GMC chief Puli Srinivasulu said Guntur's inclusion in the national 'Super Swachh League' of 23 cities places greater responsibility on the city. He stated that the GMC will intensify enforcement measures aligned with the State government's Swarnandhra – Swachhandhra initiative, with this week's theme focusing on plastic ban compliance. Guntur MLA Galla Madhavi launched the Rs 20 cloth bag vending machine and flagged off the awareness rally. Divisional Railway Manager Sudeshna Sen commended the GMC's efforts and said the Railways would enhance cleanliness measures across stations in the Guntur Division. It concluded with a human chain, Swachh pledge, and distribution of cloth bags supported by ITC and Manavatha NGOs.

Mayor dedicates achievement to people, sanitary workers
Guntur: Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra announced that the prestigious award received by the Guntur Municipal Corporation in the 'Super Swachh League Cities 2024–25' competition, conducted under the Swachh Bharat Mission is dedicated to the citizens and sanitation workers of Guntur city. Addressing the media along with GMC commissioner Puli Srinivasulu at the GMC Council Hall on Friday, he expressed pride over receiving national-level recognition. He stated that the award was the result of the efforts of the officials, sanitation workers, and active participation of the public, which helped highlight Guntur's prominence at the national level. He said that under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and guidance from Union Minister of State for Rural Development Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, he is developing Guntur city. He mentioned that even officials from Indore, known for its sanitation achievements, had inquired about Guntur's progress after this recognition. He further said that inspired by the award, the city administration aims to improve street lighting, sanitation, drinking water supply, and overall infrastructure in Guntur city. GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu said 23 cities across India that previously ranked high and currently maintain superior cleanliness standards were declared 'Super Swachh League Cities.' Among cities with populations between 3 and 10 lakhs, Guntur city bagged the Award. He attributed this success to the combined efforts of elected representatives, officials, NGOs, stakeholders, and sanitation workers. He highlighted that the regularisation of sanitation workers, provision of essential equipment and vehicles, enhancement of sanitary divisions, and guidance from district collector Nagalakshmi helped a lot. He further stated that the city administration is committed to maintaining this national recognition and transforming Guntur into a plastic-free, clean, and beautiful city. Plans are underway to establish a C&D waste treatment plant, Sewage Treatment Plant and vending zones within GMC limits. Additional Commissioner Challa Obulesu was present.

Guntur secures top honours in Swachh Survekshan rankings
Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has made history by securing top national honours in the Swachh Survekshan rankings, District Collector S. Nagalakshmi announced on Friday. She congratulated the civic body for its exceptional performance, which placed Guntur among the 23 cities in India recognised as 'Super Swachh League Cities 2024–25.' Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu and Additional Commissioner Challa Obulesu presented the award and memento to the Collector at her camp office. The Collector credited the achievement to the collective efforts of officials, public representatives, and sanitation workers. She expressed confidence that the recognition would further motivate the city to enhance sanitation and build a healthier urban environment. Meanwhile, GMC Commissioner and Additional Commissioner appreciated the District Collector's role in helping Guntur secure national-level recognition under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative for Guntur Sannam Mirchi.

Guntur Municipal Corporation repairs pipeline, restores water supply
GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation has restored most of the disrupted drinking water supply caused by a breach near Nulakapeta and a strike by contract workers, with full restoration expected by Thursday morning. In-charge Municipal Commissioner Challa Obulesu said that a damaged raw water pipeline from Undavalli had been swiftly repaired. Meanwhile, 27 APCOS workers, including key technicians, returned to work at the headwater works, resuming operations such as pumping and filtration. To mitigate shortages, the municipal call centre (0863-2345103) coordinated tanker supply under the supervision of AE-level officials. In a separate advisory, Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu addressed concerns about turbidity in the drinking water, which is sourced from the Prakasam Barrage, currently receiving water from the Godavari via the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Water Scheme. Stating that the Godavari water has high mud content, he instructed intensified filtration and proper chlorine and alum dosing. AE-level staff and ward secretaries have been directed to monitor water quality through sampling at tail-end points across the city. Srinivasulu urged residents to continue boiling water for the next few days and assured private tankers would be deployed if needed.

GMC bags Swachh Survekshan award
Guntur: The Guntur Municipal Corporation bagged Swachh Survekshan award for the year - 2025 for better sanitation in the category of Swachh Super League cities having 3 lakh to 10 lakh population category. Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra, GMC commissioner Puli Srinivasulu will receive the award from President Draupadi Murmu at a programme to be held at Vidya Bhavan in Delhi on July 17. Puli Srinivasulu congratulated the people, public health department staff and workers who tried their best for improving sanitation and to get the national level award. This is the second consecutive year that GMC bagged Swachh Survekshan award.
