Chhagan Bhujbal speaks on OBC reservation and his political comeback Pulse Maharashtra

In this episode of Pulse Maharashtra, Vinaya Deshpande sits down with Maharashtra Cabinet Minister and veteran OBC leader Chhagan Bhujbal for a wide-ranging conversation on the state's most politically charged issue: reservation. Bhujbal shares his reaction to the Supreme Court's interim order restoring OBC reservation in local body elections, criticises the Bhatia Commission report, and explains why the inclusion of Marathas in the OBC category is unacceptable to him. He revisits the historical fight for OBC rights, makes a strong case for a nationwide caste census, and warns of the growing tensions between communities due to what he calls political mismanagement. Bhujbal also speaks candidly about his return to the cabinet, past grievances with his party leadership, and whether the fractured NCP can ever be reunited. A sharp, emotional, and deeply political interview, this episode captures the pulse of Maharashtra's reservation politics. Notification awaited, Aaditya lists party's agenda for BMC elections

Raising apprehensions about whether the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections will be held this year, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said he hoped for a transparent and fair process were they to be held. Also Read | Aaditya Thackeray demands probe into scrapped MMRDA tenders He listed three priorities of the party for the municipal polls. 'The biggest priority is fixing BEST (Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking), which is the city's second biggest lifeline after the local trains. Then, fixing the schools and the healthcare system, and thereafter working on the roads and footpaths, the connectivity,' the Sena (UBT) leader told The Hindu in an interview. During a week when the arrival of monsoon brought Mumbai to its knees, he accused the BMC of 'wilful apathy'. 'The mechanisms didn't fail. I observed that none of the pre-monsoon meetings with the 17 agencies were held this year,' he said. The corporation is currently being run by a Maharashtra government-appointed administrator, the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner, with municipal elections pending for the last three years. The Supreme Court recently directed the Maharashtra State Election Commission to hold all pending local body elections within the next four months. The elections haven't been notified as yet. 'For the last three years, the BMC has been running like a headless chicken and this headless chicken is laying golden eggs for the government,' Mr. Thackeray said, adding that the corporation, which once had a surplus of over ₹90,000 crore, now has a liability of almost ₹2 lakh crore. Pawar family and Thackeray family should reunite, says Maharashtra Cabinet Minister

Batting for the re-unification of the Thackeray cousins and the Pawar uncle-nephew duo, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said that he would want the Thackeray family and the Pawar family to come together. 'Who likes to see the families being split like this? I would want them to come together. But I also know that it is not going to happen,' he told The Hindu in an exclusive interview for 'Pulse Maharashtra', a show on The Hindu's YouTube channel. The statement is significant on the background of the speculations in Maharashtra politics about the re-unification of Thackeray cousins – Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray. There have been speculations about Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar too coming together. Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar split ways after Ajit Pawar, in 2023, staked a claim to the party formed by Sharad Pawar. Also Read | Chhagan Bhujbal slams Banthia panel report on OBCs 'I have seen them together. I have seen the kind of love that the Thackeray family had for Raj Thackeray. During each vacation or holiday, Balasaheb Thackeray would call Raj over to his residence. The family would not have lunch till Raj arrived. Such was the love the family shared towards him. Then, the family split. It does not feel nice for the families to be separated. Similarly, about Ajit Pawar. I have seen him since very young days. He was groomed under the tutelage of Sharad Pawar. Who likes to see them apart? Even I want the families to be together. But I know, it will not happen. They will not come together,' he said. Recently, Raj Thackeray had said that it will not be easy to wipe off the legacies of the Thackeray and Pawar families. He had said that the families have left their mark not just in regional politics, but also in national politics, and that there was an effort to 'finish off' their names from politics. Chhagan Bhujbal was recently inducted in the Maharashtra cabinet, days after he had publicly expressed strong reservations against his party leader Ajit Pawar's decision to exclude him earlier. From OBC reservation to the State politics, from Maratha quota demand to slamming Manoj Jarange-Patil, and from Thackerays to the Pawars, he spoke on a range of topics in a free-wheeling conversation.
