Eid-ul-Azha: over 1.1m animals sold across Punjab

LAHORE: Over 1.1 million sacrificial animals were sold across 292 livestock markets in Punjab during Eid-ul-Adha whereas a total of 1.5 million animals were brought to markets throughout Punjab. Moreover, during an uninterrupted 72-hour sanitation operation, the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) collected and safely disposed of 88,927 tons of animal waste in the Lahore Division. According to the Punjab Local Government Department on Monday, the figure relating to the sales of sacrificial animals involved all nine administrative divisions of the province, which highlights the thriving Eid animal trade. Lahore topped the list of divisions with the highest sales, recording the sale of 665,000 animals, which included 443,000 small animals (goats and sheep) and 222,000 large animals (cows and bulls). In Faisalabad, 112,000 animals were brought to market and 88,000 were sold. The Bahawalpur Division also displayed significant activity, with over 100,000 animals sold; in contrast, DG Khan had more modest sales figures, with 38,000 small animals and just 30,000 large animals sold. Moreover, Rawalpindi saw 84,000 animals brought into the markets, with 46,000 sold while Sahiwal recorded 47,000 animal sales and Sargodha impressively posted 94,000 animals sold. In Gujranwala, around 10,000 animals were bought and sold, and Multan experienced trade involving 16,000 animals. The Local Government Department noted that the livestock markets across the province remained largely organised, with improved facilities and management contributing to the smooth conduct of buying and selling activities. Meanwhile, Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq remained active during the Eid holidays to monitor the Eid Grand Operation launched on Eid-ul-Azha. On the first day, he reviewed the areas of Lahore, Kasur, Pattoki and Okara districts, while on the second day, the provincial minister went to Faisalabad, Gojra and Toba Tek Singh. In Lahore, Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq, Special Assistant Zeeshan Malik, Commissioner Lahore Zaid Bin Maqsood and Focal Person Suthra Punjab Asim Mehmood jointly visited the Safe City Authority and reviewed the monitoring of waste disposal with the help of Safe City cameras. Later, the Local Minister went to Laxmi Chowk and Mall Road awareness camps and checked the record of waste bags there. He also inspected the ongoing operation at the Baba Ground Dumping Site while visiting the suburbs of Shahi Qila and took feedback from the citizens. While talking to the media, the Minister said that the workers cleaning the roads and streets in the scorching heat are our heroes; ideal arrangements have been made for cleaning in the entire Punjab, including Lahore. 'About 130,000 staff were engaged in cleaning and they have broken their previous year's record of cleaning. There is a team in every city and every village and we will ensure that the set targets are achieved,' he added. On the second day of Eid, he visited Faisalabad city; on this occasion, Deputy Commissioner Faisalabad Nadeem Nasir and CEO of FWMC Rauf Ahmed gave a briefing. Rafiq reviewed the ongoing Grand Eid operation in different areas of Faisalabad and visited the control room and awareness camp at Chowk Ghanta Ghar. He expressed satisfaction with the overall cleanliness arrangements in Faisalabad. Meanwhile, the LWMC said that this Eid-ul-Adha, the Lahore Division witnessed exemplary cleanliness arrangements, breaking all previous records in waste management across the Division. It not only achieved unprecedented success in Lahore city but also set new benchmarks in Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Nankana Sahib. The comprehensive and uninterrupted 72-hour sanitation operation resulted in the environmentally safe disposal of 88,927 tons of animal waste, it added. Breaking down the figures, the LWMC successfully removed 54,888 tons of waste from Lahore, 15,543 tons from Sheikhupura, 12,066 tons from Kasur, and 6,430 tons from Nankana Sahib. 'These efforts surpassed all previous benchmarks, reflecting an exceptional level of preparedness and coordination. Throughout the three days of Eid, the Lahore Division addressed and resolved 20,268 complaints promptly,' the LWMC said. It averred that to prevent illegal dumping of waste into streams, drains, and canals Safe City and drone cameras monitored the situation continuously. The enforcement wing took actions that included the registration of 20 FIRs, seizure of three vehicles, and fines exceeding Rs 300,000. Moreover, for eco-friendly waste disposal, 2.4 million biodegradable bags were distributed throughout the Lahore Division. Moreover, the clean-up infrastructure included 651 service delivery camps, 254 temporary collection points, and 34 dumping sites. According to doctors, extremely hot weather and consumption of spicy and unhygienic food caused gastroenteritis and other stomach diseases. Patients injured in road accidents and while slaughtering sacrificial animals were also brought the hospitals. Hospital officials in Lahore said a large number of patients were treated on the three Eid days. The people host parties with relatives to eat dishes cooked after the sacrifice. A large number of them faced health issues, resulting in an increased workload on the doctors and paramedical staff in the hospitals. A large number of patients was recorded in the Mayo, Sir Ganga Ram, Lahore General, Jinnah, Government Nawaz Sharif, Shahdara and Services hospitals along with the private health facilities. "In the hospitals of the city, a large number of patients were those who had consumed oily and unhygienic food or overeaten meat of sacrificial animals," said Mayo Hospital Senior Medical Officer Dr Fareed Ahmad. He said healthcare experts had advised the people to avoid overeating amid the hot weather and to eat light food. The doctor said the families should avoid cooking spicy dishes that were the major cause of stomach problems. He said the patients of heart, kidney and liver disease should especially avoid overeating. Besides overeating, patients of heat stroke, victims of road accidents and untrained butchers were also among the patients treated during the holidays. The Punjab government had instructed the all public sector hospitals to make arrangements to treat patients during the Eid holidays, including preparation of duty rosters to ensure day and night service in the emergency wards. "Although there was load on the hospitals during the Eid days, their arrangements were excellent this time as the health ministry was monitoring the situation. Our doctors, nursing and paramedical staff were on duty and they sacrificed their Eid to provide treatment facilities to the people and we salute them," said Punjab Health Department spokesperson Sayed Hamad Raza. According to figures released on Monday by the Punjab Local Government Department, more than 1.1 million sacrificial animals were sold across the province for the Eid. A total of 1.5 million animals were brought to 292 livestock markets established across the province. Lahore division recorded the highest sales, with 665,000 animals sold, including 443,000 goats and sheep, and 222,000 cows and bulls. In Faisalabad, 112,000 animals were brought to the markets and 88,000 were sold. Bahawalpur recorded over 100,000 sales. In contrast, Dera Ghazi Khan had modest activity, with 38,000 small and 30,000 large animals sold. The Rawalpindi markets saw 84,000 animals brought in, of which 46,000 were sold.

66 cities of Punjab to be uplifted in new financial year

LAHORE: Under the Chief Minister Cities Development Programme, the Punjab government has decided to launch development schemes in 66 cities of Punjab in the new financial year. Under this programme, all dirt roads will be paved or repaired, along with the construction and repair of connection roads, and a comprehensive sewage system will be introduced. Moreover, disposal stations will be solarised while sewerage problems will be solved by keeping in mind the needs of the population in 2050. In addition to rainwater drainage, storage tanks will also be built, and restoration of parks will also be included in the project. In this connection, the copies of PC-1 have been sent to the relevant municipal bodies. In this regard, Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq issued instructions while chairing a meeting through a video link on Thursday. Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Additional Secretary Ahmar Kaifi, PMDFC MD and Deputy Commissioners of various districts participated. The Minister directed the concerned deputy commissioners to keep the model of the Lahore Development Programme in mind while working on the development schemes. He clarified that there will be no additional recruitment for the Cities Development Programme except for technical experts, and thus, only the available human resources will be utilised. 'The Punjab Local Government Department will complete this mega project in collaboration with Public Health Engineering,' he added. Rafiq said that in the next phase, 110 more cities will be included in the programme; in every city, all dirt roads will be paved or repaired, along with the construction and repair of connection roads, and a comprehensive sewage system will be introduced. 'In this connection, the copies of PC-1 have been sent to the relevant municipal bodies,' he added. He said the deputy commissioners have also been made members of the steering committee. He observed that in the past, only partial schemes were completed in cities; however, for the first time, an end-to-end solution for sanitation will be provided. He directed that transparency should be taken care of while implementing the project on the timeline. On this occasion, the Secretary said that e-tendering and digital payment methods should be implemented in the programme. He directed that before the construction of the streets, sui gas, electricity companies and cable network institutions should complete their work. 'After the completion of the work,' he warned, 'digging will be prohibited without the NOC of the district administration.' He said the use of safe and durable sewer pipes is the highlight of this program, adding that the benefits of HTP-lined sewer pipes will last for the next 100 years. The Punjab Cattle Market Management and Development Company (PCMMDC) will oversee the implementation of the system, which will bring all 112 registered cattle markets in the province under a unified digital auction platform. According to a spokesperson for the department, the move aims to ensure transparency, curb corruption and streamline the auction process through digital means. Online registration for contractors is under way.
