Printed, seized, forgotten: PSEB textbook scam stuck since 2016
1 2 Mohali: Nearly nine years after an FIR was registered in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) textbook paper scam, the case continues to languish with little progress. The board is still awaiting a reply from the Rajasthan board, after discovering that a paper carrying the latter's watermark was used in textbooks meant for Punjab students — a violation of publishing norms. The scam came to light in 2016, when PSEB that found several textbooks meant for Punjab schools, were printed on paper carrying the Rajasthan board's watermark, instead of the mandated PSEB watermark. Suspecting foul play, the board registered an FIR against Jalandhar-based Choice Printers, accusing the publisher of printing extra copies using unauthorised paper for financial gain. The board seized the questionable textbooks and placed them in the custody of police. The books remain under official possession to this day. In a surprising twist, the police, in a letter to PSEB recently, stated that none of the seven schools listed as recipients of the faulty textbooks appeared to record their statements. However, the board clarified that four schools had indeed deposed, while three had failed to do so — a shortfall the police claim is hindering further proceedings. PSEB chairperson Amarpal Singh, commenting on the matter, said, "I am new to the board, and this case dates to nearly a decade. I will ensure the officials concerned follow it up appropriately." Sources within the board said police were considering closing the case due to lack of evidence and witness cooperation. However, the board remains firm in its stance and is prepared to challenge any such move. "We will not let the case be closed without a legal conclusion. This is not just a violation of protocol, but a clear attempt to exploit the system for profit," a PSEB official said on condition of anonymity. The core allegation revolves around the use of Rajasthan board-marked paper in printing PSEB textbooks, allegedly to produce excess copies beyond the approved quantity. The board collected samples from various parts of the state and confirmed the discrepancy before filing the FIR. Despite the gravity of the matter, no substantial progress has been made since 2016, leaving questions over accountability and enforcement of publishing standards in the education system. With the board is now pledging to revive the investigation, the case may finally inch towards a long-delayed legal resolution.

Punjab School Education Board to create eco-system for protection of students' ideas
The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) on Thursday organised a special session titled 'Rethinking education framework for next generation learning' to help students turn their ideas into real products and protect them from being copied. 'Every student has a unique mind. We want to help them turn their ideas into reality and make sure no one steals them,' said Amarpal Singh, chairman, PSEB. (HT) The board shared that it was working to build a system to actively help students think freely, create new things and get support to protect their work legally. 'Every student has a unique mind. We want to help them turn their ideas into reality and make sure no one steals them,' said Amarpal Singh, chairman, PSEB. In an inspiring session, students and teachers learned how creative projects and inventions made by children can be turned into real products. Dr Ruchi Sharma, an expert in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), explained in simple words how students can register and safeguard their own creations, whether it's a science model, an app or a small invention. This session was part of PSEB's larger mission to make education more meaningful and modern — not just based on books and exams, but on creativity, innovation and real-world learning. A proud moment came when Mayank Sharma, a student from GGSSS, Dhuri, took the stage. With guidance from his teacher Kiran Bala, Mayank built a project called 'Depression Detector' using artificial intelligence (AI). His tool helps understand if someone might be feeling low or mentally unwell. The audience clapped as he told his story — from learning basic coding to creating a meaningful project that could help people. The chairman said, 'We want every child in Punjab to believe that their ideas matter. We will help them create, build and protect their inventions.' To support more brilliant students, PSEB has decided opening of more Atal Tinkering Labs in schools. These labs are spaces where students can use tools and technology to turn ideas into real projects. Raminderjeet Kaur from SCERT Punjab also shared that schools will now work more actively to help students think creatively and develop their problem-solving skills.

Mohali: Govt to collab with foreign embassies for Punjab's educational growth, says Bains
In an initiative to promote Punjabi as the mother tongue at both national and international levels, the Punjab government has introduced the 'International Punjabi Boli Olympiad' as an annual event. This olympiad provides an online syllabus and a structured testing platform to assess proficiency in the Punjabi language, said education minister Harjot Singh Bains on Friday while distributing prizes to the winners at the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB). Punjab education minister Harjot Singh Bains (HT File) Minister Bains stated that the initiative aims to strengthen the connection of the younger generation with their linguistic roots. The olympiad, which began two years ago under the aegis of PSEB, honoured the winners of the International Punjabi Boli Olympiad 2024 with cash prizes— ₹5,100 for first place, ₹3,100 for second, and ₹2,100 for third position. The olympiad was open to students from Class 3 to 5, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. Registration began in August, followed by a mock test in November. The final examination was conducted on December 7 and 8, 2024, scheduled as per the time zones of Europe, Africa, America, Australia, and India to facilitate global participation. Commending PSEB for the successful execution of the event, the minister urged that it be made a permanent annual feature to promote the Punjabi language wherever Punjabi-speaking communities reside. Bains further announced that the Board would soon collaborate with foreign embassies and educational institutions to strengthen Punjab's global educational footprint. He added that in the near future, PSEB would be recognised internationally for its exceptional initiatives. Bains also revealed that a Science Olympiad would also be launched soon by PSEB. 'The Board is also set to launch its own YouTube channel to support educational outreach,' he added. Appreciating the efforts of teachers and subject experts involved in developing the Olympiad curriculum and coordinating related activities, the minister felicitated them during the event. While interacting with media persons, Minister Bains addressed concerns regarding vacant principal posts. He assured that 450 principals would be promoted soon, and that teachers' vacancies are being filled through the due process. Amarpal Singh, chairman of PSEB, thanked the education minister and reaffirmed the board's commitment to continuing the olympiad and launching the Science Olympiad.
