‘Don' director Chandra Barot dies at 86; film fraternity mourns his demise
Last Updated: Mumbai, Jul 20 (PTI) Veteran filmmaker Chandra Barot, best known for directing the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan-starrer 'Don", passed away on Sunday due to cardiac arrest at a hospital in Mumbai, his family said. He was 86. Barot was battling 'Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis' (IPF-fibrosis of lungs) for the last 11 years and had been receiving treatment at the Guru Nanak Hospital, as per his family. 'Chandra passed away at the Guru Nanak Hospital this morning at 6.30 due to cardiac arrest caused by a chest infection. He had IPF, which is fibrosis of the lungs, for the past 11 years," his wife Deepa Barot told PTI. Before making his directorial debut with 'Don", the filmmaker served as an assistant director to actor-director Manoj Kumar in 'Purab Aur Pachhim", 'Roti Kapada Aur Makaan", 'Yaadgaar", and 'Shor". After 'Don", Chandra Barot directed a Bengali film – 'Aashrita" (1989). Released in May 1978, 'Don", featuring megastar Amitabh Bachchan in a double role — that of a mafioso and a simpleton — went on to become a blockbuster with its racy music, iconic dialogues and pulsating action. One of the most celebrated films of Chandra Barot's career, 'Don" had its fair share of ups and downs. On the 40th anniversary of the movie in 2018, Chandra Barot in an interview with PTI shared an interesting insight that he, along with his friends Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Pran – all three who featured in 'Don" — decided to make the film to pull one of their producer friends, Nariman Irani, out of debt. 'Bawa's (Irani) wife was a hairdresser and knew writer Salim Khan. We asked her to put in a word for us. When we met Salim, he didn't have a script ready but told us, 'There is one subject which no one understands'. 'We said 'we don't care, we just want 'Salim-Javed' written on the posters'. It was a ready script and we took it immediately. It didn't even have a title. Everyone in the industry called it 'Don waali script'," Chandra Barot had recalled. Sadly, Irani passed away six months before the release of 'Don", he added. The filmmaker also revealed that many big stars in the industry, including Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Dev Anand, had refused the movie, which was one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 1978. Chandra Barot is survived by his wife and a son. 'Don" was turned into a franchise by filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, son of Javed Akhtar, who had written the original script of the movie along with Salim Khan. Film industry colleagues took to social media to mourn Chandra Barot's death, remembering him as a wonderful filmmaker who made one of the most entertaining Hindi movies – 'Don". Farhan Akhtar paid tribute to the 'OG' 'Don" filmmaker on Instagram. 'Saddened to learn that the director of the OG Don is no more. RIP Chandra Barot-ji. Deepest condolences to the family," said the actor-filmmaker. Farhan Akhtar's Excel Entertainment bought the rights to the 1978 film and directed it in 2006, with superstar Shah Rukh Khan playing the titular role. He made the follow-up movie 'Don 2" in 2011. The third part of the franchise will see actor Ranveer Singh stepping into the shoes of Khan. Filmmaker Kunal Kohli fondly remembered assisting the late director on an unreleased movie, 'Boss", starring Vinod Khanna. 'Chandra ji RIP sir. The only director I assisted. Not in 'Don'. For a film with Vinod Khanna called 'Boss' that never saw the light of day. But what an enriching experience working with him. Heard so many BTS stories of 'Don'," Kohli said on X. 'I sided bunk college and assisted Chandra ji. Remarkably sharp man. Lovely person. Had a very enlightening and fun chat with him. Thank you, sir, for giving us #Don Indian cinemas' most stylish films to date," he added. Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta thanked Barot for making 'Don", which he described as one of the most entertaining Hindi movies ever made. 'Rest In Peace, Chandra Barot Sir. Many thanks for DON. One of the most entertaining Hindi films ever," he said. When Amitabh Bachchan Revealed That No Distributor Was Willing To Accept Chandra Barot's Don: "They All Thought..."
New Delhi: Veteran filmmaker Chandra Barot died on Sunday, July 20. He was 86. His wife, Deepa Barot, confirmed the news and told TOI, 'He had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for the past seven years.' Did you know that when Chandra Barot's 1978 cult classic film, Don, was released, many distributors were not too happy with the film's title? Not only that, several people even confused the title with the name of an undergarment brand. In fact, in a 2020 blog post, Amitabh Bachchan shared a funny anecdote about it. He wrote, "When Chandra and Salim-Javed announced the name of the film as Don, no distributor was willing to accept the title. They all thought it to be named after the Dawn underwear, a popular brand during those times. The film 'Godfather' was just making a mark in film circles. The word Don was unknown till then,' as quoted by Business Standard. Don features Amitabh Bachchan in dual roles – Don and Vijay – alongside Zeenat Aman as Roma, Pran as Jasjit, Iftekhar as DSP D'Silva and Om Shivpuri as Vardhaan. The cast also includes Satyen Kappu, P. Jairaj, Kamal Kapoor, Arpana Choudhary and Helen. The film follows the story of a wanted criminal named Don. During a chase, Don dies, but only one police officer knows the truth. To catch the rest of Don's gang, the officer recruits a simple man named Vijay who happens to look exactly like Don. Before turning director, Chandra Barot worked as an assistant director on films like Purab Aur Pachhim, Yaadgaar, Shor and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan. Apart from Don, he directed projects like Aashrita, Pyar Bhara Dil, Hong Kong Wali Script and Neil Ko Pakadna... Impossible.

Chandra Barot, director of Amitabh Bachchan's iconic film ‘Don,' passes away at 86
Veteran filmmaker Chandra Barot, best known for helming Amitabh Bachchan's 1978 cult classic Don, passed away at a hospital in Mumbai on Sunday (July 20). He was 86. Chandra was battling 'Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis' (IPF-fibrosis of lungs) for the past 11 years and had been receiving treatment at the Guru Nanak Hospital, as per his family. 'Chandra passed away at the Guru Nanak Hospital this morning at 6.30 due to cardiac arrest caused by a chest infection. He had IPF, which is fibrosis of the lungs, for the past 11 years,' his wife, Deepa Barot told PTI. Farhan Akhtar, who is directing the third film in the renewed Don franchise, paid tribute to Chandra on Instagram, writing, 'Saddened to learn that the director of the OG Don is no more. RIP Chandra Barot-ji. Deepest condolences to the family.' Born and raised in Tanzania, Chandra worked at the Barclays Bank in Dara-es-Salam, before racial turmoil forced him to leave the country in 1967. In India, he pursued his passion in filmmaking and joined late veteran actor-director Manoj Kumar as an assistant director, working in films such as Purab Aur Pachhim, Yaadgaar, Shor andRoti Kapada Aur Makaan. In 1978, he made a film he would forever be remembered for: the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer, Don, which had a script written by Salim–Javed. However, pundits would fondly remember him for the reason he directed the film in the first place. Chandra wanted to help his friend, cinematographer-producer Nariman Irani, who had suffered terrible financial losses reportedly due to the failure of 1972's Zindagi Zindagi. After Don, Chandra helmed the Bengali film Aashrita in 1989, and returned to Hindi cinema with 1991's Pyar Bhara Dil. Chandra's subsequent projects, Hong Kong Wali Script and Neil Ko never saw the light of the day. However, Don lived on. In 2006, the film was rebooted in a new franchise by director Farhan Akhtar and lead star Shah Rukh Khan. They reunited again for a sequel, the 2011's Don 2: The King Is Back. Farhan is now making a third Don film with actor Ranveer Singh in the lead. The legacy of Don stretches far and beyond Bollywood, paving way for renditions headlined by the likes of Rajinikanth, Ajith Kumar, Prabhas and Mohanlal. Chandra Barot is survived by his wife and a son. The news about Chandra's death has shocked the film industry. Fans, well-wishers and colleagues from the film fraternity have been expressing their condolences. (with inputs from PTI)

'Don' director Chandra Barot dies at 86
Filmmaker Chandra Barot, best known for directing the 1978 cult classic 'Don' starring Amitabh Bachchan, passed away at the age of 86 on Sunday. His wife, Deepa Barot, confirmed the demise to TOI and said, "He had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for the past seven years," she said. Barot was undergoing treatment at Guru Nanak Hospital under Dr Manish Shetty. He had earlier also been admitted to Jaslok Hospital. Barot was born to a family that later moved to Dar-es-Salaam, South Africa, due to political uncertainty in the 1930s. He worked at Barclay's Bank in Tanzania before pursuing a career in filmmaking. Barot assisted Manoj Kumar in several films, including 'Purab Aur Pachhim', before making his directorial debut with Amitabh Bachchan starrer 'Don'. Chandra's decision to direct 'Don' remains etched in Bollywood history — a gesture made to support his close friend and cinematographer-producer Nariman Irani.
