Qatar's Al Jumaat wins U-10 gold at Arab C'ship in Casablanca

Tribune News Network Doha Qatar's Khaled Al Jumaat won gold medal at the Arab Age Groups Championship, held in Casablanca, Morocco with the participation of 216 players from 13 Arab countries. The championship was organized by the Royal Moroccan Chess Federation under the supervision of the Arab Chess Federation. Al Jumaat claimed the top place in the Under-10 category scoring 7.5 points in nine rounds. The Qatar delegation was headed by Omar Saleh Al Marri, a member of the Board of Directors of the Qatar Chess Association (QCA), and was accompanied by international referee Hussein Al Haddad, part of the participating technical and administrative staff. The participation is an important step in the federation's age group development plan and reflects the efforts made to prepare a promising generation of chess players in Qatar. President of the Qatar Chess Association Mohammed Al Mudhahka expressed his happiness with the national team's performance at the Arab Championship, noting that participation in the tournament gave the players the opportunity to interact with different schools, in addition to raising their international rankings and achieving outstanding results. He emphasized that the tournament witnessed record participation and awarded international titles to the top-ranked players, which enhances the value of this achievement and motivates continued work and development in preparation for future participations. For his part, Hamad Al Tamimi, Executive Director of QCA, said that this success was the result of the strategic vision adopted by the Federation, which focuses on developing the sport of chess locally by investing in different age groups and increasing regional and international participation. The Qatar team that participated in the Arab Championship included: Turki Al Kuwari, Saif Ahmed, and Fahad Al Mansouri in the 18-year-old category, Hamad Al Kuwari, Layan Al Qasabi, and Rawda Al Qasabi in the 16-year-old category, Ibrahim Al Janahi in the 14-year-old category, Amer Al Hammadi in the 12-year-old category, Khaled Al Jumaat and Asma Al Hammadi in the 10-year-old category, and Abdulaziz Al Mahasneh in the 8-year-old category.

Stage set for third edition of Qatar Rail Open Chess

Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar Chess Association (QCA) has announced details of the 3rd edition of Qatar Rail Open Chess Championship 2025, organized in cooperation with Qatar Rail. The tournament coincides with World Chess Day, which falls on July 20 every year. The preliminary rounds will begin tomorrow, Thursday, at the Qatar Chess Training Center, with the participation of 100 players. The competition will be held in a nine-round blitz format to determine the players who will advance to the final stage. The final rounds of the tournament will be held on Sunday at the Al Bidda Station of Doha Metro. Twenty players will participate in the nine-round Swiss system. QCA said it has made all arrangements for smooth start of the competition tomorrow, putting the final touches on the selection of arbiters who will oversee the competitions. QCA President Mohammed Al Mudahka praised the continuation of the tournament for a third consecutive year, appreciating the cooperation between QCA and Qatar Rail, which aims to achieve several goals, most notably spreading the culture of chess in society. He expressed his aspiration for further cooperation that would help QCA achieve its vision of developing the game by building a strong base for it. He explained that the tournament is witnessing participation of a large number of national team players, emphasizing that the tournament aims to see new players emerge who will support the national teams in future. He also emphasized that the tournament is part of QCA's plans to bring about a qualitative shift in the game and attract talent. He added that the tournament represents a valuable opportunity to discover more promising talent for inclusion in the coming period, expanding the selection of the best players to represent Qatari chess in international tournaments. For his part, Abdullah Ali Al Mawlawi, Head of Communications and Public Relations at Qatar Rail, expressed his pleasure in partnering with the Qatar Chess Association in organizing the event following the success achieved in the first two editions. 'Our sponsorship of the championship falls within our commitment to promoting community and sporting activities, spreading the culture of chess, and encouraging local talent in this sport,' he said. 'We look forward to hosting the finals of this championship at the Al Bidda Station of Doha Metro, which in turn supports our strategy to enhance the position of the Doha Metro network and the Lusail Tram, transforming them into preferred destinations for hosting various community events throughout the year.'

Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar Chess Association (QCA) on Monday announced details of the 2025 Summer Program, which will be held at the training center from July 6 to 31. QCA said that the summer activities program, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will be spread over four weeks. It aims to teach the basics of chess and develop participants' strategic thinking skills as part of its efforts to expand participation in the game, discover talent, attract more players to join the center, and develop plans to develop their abilities and hone their skills. The program will begin on July 6 and continue until the end of the month. Activities will begin daily at 10am and continue until 12:30pm for ages 6 to 12. QCA has included a number of activities on the summer program agenda, including cultural, awareness, and entertainment workshops, in cooperation with various government agencies and institutions, including the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Qatar Scientific Club, the Qatar Red Crescent, and the Friends of the Environment Center.

Preparations continue for 2025 World Rapid and Blitz Chess C‘ships in Qatar

QNA Doha Executive Director of Qatar Chess Association (QCA), Hamad Al Tamimi has affirmed that preparations are going on to host a distinguished edition of the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship for men and women, set to take place in Doha from December 25 to 31. In his remarks on Thursday, Tamimi noted that the tournament is expected to feature the participation of approximately 350 top-ranked players from around the world. The total prize pool stands at one million euros, 700,000 euros allocated to the open category (equally divided between the rapid and blitz formats), and 300,000 euros for the women's category, also equally divided. He stressed QCA's commitment to delivering an outstanding edition of the championship across all levels, building on its previous successful hosting of the event in 2016. Speaking about the QCA's strategic plans and tournament calendar, Al Tamimi stated: 'We have set several objectives and plans aimed at expanding the base of Chess participation across the country. To that end, we organized 50 local tournaments in cooperation with various national entities and institutions. Additionally, the second edition of the 'Naqla' school Chess initiative saw the participation of 300 students from public schools, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.' He added: 'We have also made it a priority to organize specialized tournaments in youth centers and clubs, alongside a series of local competitions held at the QCA's training center.' Al Tamimi highlighted the ongoing collaboration with Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, noting that the 2025 Pre-University Education Chess Championship was recently held with the participation of 72 players representing six schools. This tournament is part of the agreement between the Qatar Chess Association and Qatar Foundation, which aims to introduce Chess into schools and academies under the Foundation's umbrella, broaden the base of youth participants in local tournaments, and increase the number of registered and FIDE-rated players. The Executive Director of QCA emphasized that the partnership with Qatar Foundation seeks to achieve several goals, foremost among them promoting Chess culture within the Foundation's schools. This aligns with the Association's broader strategy to develop Chess in Qatar, establish a strong player base, and employ Chess as an educational tool to enhance students' cognitive and mathematical skills, boost self-confidence, and support intellectual development through a scientifically grounded educational initiative. Hamad Al Tamimi also praised the Association's efforts in supporting three Qatari referees, Youssef Khalil Al Muhasnah, Hussein Al Haddad, and Sara Al Mohannadi, who recently obtained their international refereeing licenses. He concluded by highlighting the launch of the Association's summer program at its training center, aimed at broadening the base of Chess participation, discovering emerging talent, attracting new players, and implementing development plans to nurture and refine their skills.

The Qatar Cricket Association (QCA) has been recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as one of the winners for ICC Cricket 4 Good Social Impact Initiative of the Year 2024. QCA which has held blood donation campaigns and other initiatives said, 'The milestone highlights our commitment to using cricket as a force for positive change - empowering communities and building a better future through cricket.' Cricket 4 Good Social Impact Initiative of the Year: Africa Regional Winner – Cricket Kenya; Americas Regional Winner – Cricket Chile; Asia Regional Winner – Qatar Cricket Association; EAP Regional Winner – Persatuan Cricket Indonesia; Europe Regional Winner – Cricket Switzerland. The Regional Winners will now be put forward as contenders to claim the Global Awards, determined by a specialist and independent panel of voters consisting of Indian cricket icon VVS Laxman, former West Indies leg-spinner Samuel Badree, former White Ferns wicketkeeper-batter Katey Martin, Head of Marketing – Unilever International Nitin Agarwal and representatives from ICC partners, ICC Full Members, and the media, with the Global Winners set to be revealed on ICC channels once voting concludes.
