How a Non-English Speaking Qatari Camel Herder Ended Up on London's Most Exclusive Street — Before Attempting Rape at Private Clinic

LONDON, June 28: Standing in the dock at Southwark Crown Court this week was 27-year-old Nasser Al-Gherainiq, a Qatari national convicted of two counts of attempted rape that left his victim 'frozen with fear,' in her own words. Al-Gherainiq, described as a camel herder from a conservative Bedouin tribe in Qatar, had never left his homeland before arriving in London in 2023 for heart treatment at a private clinic linked to the Royal Brompton Hospital. According to his defence, he had little exposure to urban life or modern social norms and was 'equivalent to an immature adolescent' who did not understand his victim's lack of consent, reports Mail Online. The jury rejected this claim. Al-Gherainiq assaulted a woman inside a toilet cubicle at the medical centre, and the judge said he 'knew perfectly well what [he] was doing,' sentencing him to seven years in prison. The case has raised questions about how he arrived in London and who funded his stay. Official records show that he was temporarily housed at 79 Mount Street in Mayfair — a mansion owned by the State of Qatar and managed by its London embassy. The property, known for hosting exclusive events, occasionally provides emergency accommodation for Qatari nationals abroad. Qatar's government offers universal healthcare, including funding overseas treatment when necessary. In 2023, over 50,000 Qataris applied to seek treatment abroad. Al-Gherainiq was among them, initially provided with a daily allowance for lodging. When those arrangements fell through, the embassy placed him at Mount Street. Following his arrest, the embassy evicted him and stated it had no further contact with him beyond basic consular support. Al-Gherainiq belongs to the Al Murrah tribe, known for its nomadic traditions and ties to Qatar's ruling family. He had limited contact with women and almost none outside his family, the court heard. His only close relationship with a woman was with his mother. However, this background failed to mitigate the gravity of the crime. Judge Adam Hiddleston noted the severe psychological harm inflicted on the victim, who now suffers from anxiety, nightmares, and social withdrawal. 'Clearly what you did has had a devastating effect on her,' he told the defendant. The judge also recommended Al-Gherainiq be deported after serving his sentence. His barrister confirmed that he has no intention of remaining in the UK. The Qatari Embassy has faced scrutiny before. In 2019, it was the subject of a sexual harassment tribunal brought by Deanne Kingson, a personal assistant who alleged a culture of misogyny and exploitation among senior diplomatic staff. She was awarded nearly £390,000 for unfair dismissal. Though the embassy distanced itself from Al-Gherainiq's case, the uncomfortable parallels have stirred renewed criticism of attitudes toward women among some elements of Qatar's elite, and questions about how a man with such an isolated upbringing came to be living on one of London's most exclusive streets.

'Disrespectful, condemnable': Iran hits back at Donald Trump, asks if he's 'genuine about a deal'

Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has called out Donald Trump 's recent outburst against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei . He said bluntly that if the US President truly wants to talk, he must first watch his words. 'If President Trump is genuine about wanting a deal, he should put aside the disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran's Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, and stop hurting his millions of heartfelt followers,' Araghchi posted on X. — araghchi (@araghchi) by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Elegant New Scooters For Seniors In 2024: The Prices May Surprise You Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Learn More Undo Tensions remain high after Israel struck Iranian nuclear and military sites on 13 June. The fighting lasted 12 days. Washington joined the offensive by bombing three of Iran's nuclear facilities on 22 June under what it called Operation 'Midnight Hammer'. Iran hit back by launching missiles at a US base in Qatar. Mocking Israel, Araghchi wrote, 'The Great and Powerful Iranian People, who showed the world that the Israeli regime had NO CHOICE but to RUN to 'Daddy' to avoid being flattened by our Missiles, do not take kindly to Threats and Insults.' Live Events Trump claims he saved Khamenei While the dust settled, Trump took to Truth Social and claimed he had stopped Israeli and US forces from killing Khamenei. 'I knew EXACTLY where he was sheltered, and would not let Israel, or the U.S. Armed Forces, by far the Greatest and Most Powerful in the World, terminate his life,' Trump wrote. 'I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH, and he does not have to say, 'THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP!'' he added. Trump also questioned Khamenei's claim of victory over Israel. He said the Iranian leader had 'blatantly and foolishly' lied about winning the war. 'As a man of great faith, he is not supposed to lie,' Trump posted. Talks or no talks The US President said he had been working on possible sanction relief for Iran. 'But no, instead I get hit with a statement of anger, hatred, and disgust, and immediately dropped all work on sanction relief, and more,' Trump wrote. Despite that, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insists the door to talks is not closed. 'I spoke to our special envoy Witkoff at length this morning and I can assure all of you we continue to be in close communication with the Iranians and through our intermediaries as well, namely the Qataris, who have been an incredible ally and partner throughout this entire effort,' she said. She added the US wants Iran to agree to a non-enrichment civil nuclear programme. Iran holds its ground But Araghchi showed no sign of softening. He warned, 'If Illusions lead to worse mistakes, Iran will not hesitate to unveil its Real Capabilities, which will certainly END any Delusion about the Power of Iran.' He reminded the world that Iran's resilience runs deep. 'The complexity and tenacity of Iranians are famously known in our magnificent carpets, woven through countless hours of hard work and patience. But as a people, our basic premise is very simple and straightforward: we know our worth, value our independence, and never allow anyone else to decide our destiny.' He signed off with a line that leaves little doubt where Tehran stands. 'Good will begets good will, and respect begets respect.' The 12-day conflict may have ended but both sides keep their guards up. Trump's claim that Iran is 'a burned out, blown up Country, with no future, a decimated Military, a horrible Economy, and DEATH all around them,' has only hardened Tehran's posture. For now, Iran's message is clear. They will not bow to threats, or insults. They say any deal must begin with respect — or not at all.

Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, said on Saturday that President Donald Trump should put aside the "disrespectful tone" towards Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei if the US wants to have a deal with Iran. Underscoring that Iran does not take it kindly to threats and insults, Aragchi said that Iran would not hesitate to unveil its real capabilities. "The complexity and tenacity of Iranians are famously known in our magnificent carpets, woven through countless hours of hard work and patience. Trump admin focused on diplomacy, communication with Iran: White House

Leavitt underscored how the US President is hopeful that the more countries in the Middle East would sign the Abraham Accords for enduring peace in the region ANI US White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Thursday (US local time) said the Trump administration is focused on diplomacy and peace, adding that the US continues to remain in close communication with the Iranians. Addressing a press briefing, Leavitt said, "I spoke to our special envoy Witkoff at length this morning and I can assure all of you we continue to be in close communication with the Iranians and through our intermediaries as well, namely the Qataris, who have been an incredible ally and partner throughout this entire effort. As I said, this administration is always focused on diplomacy and peace, and we want to ensure we can get to a place where Iran agrees to a non-enrichment civil nuclear program." "The president wants peace. He always has, and right now we're on a diplomatic path with Iran. The president and his team, namely special envoy Witkoff, continue to be in communication with the Iranians and especially our Gulf and Arab partners in the region to come to an agreement with Iran," she added. Her remarks follow after the US had conducted precision strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites under Operation 'Midnight Hammer'. Speaking about Operation Hammer, Leavitt said that the mission was a total success. "When we look at the entirety of the intelligence that we have to date, it concludes that these strikes on the Iranian nuclear facilities were absolutely successful. It was a total obliteration, as the President said. Not only does our own intelligence say that, but the Iranian Foreign Minister also said that. We saw Israel conclude the same thing based on their own intelligence. We also had the United Nations say that as well," she said. Highlighting that the Abraham Accords was one of Trump's most "signature accomplishments" in his first term, Leavitt said that the US President would like to see more countries sign on during his second term. "As for our alliance with the state of Israel and that friendship, partnership between the United States and the state of Israel I would argue it has never been stronger and see a new era in which perhaps some of these Gulf and Arab states can sign on to the Abraham Accords," she said. Leavitt underscored how the US President is hopeful that the more countries in the Middle East would sign the Abraham Accords for enduring peace in the region. "When the President met with the new president of Syria, that was one of the requests that he made for Syria to sign on to the Abraham Accords." Her remarks were reiterated by the Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the State Department, Tommy Pigott, when asked about the goal of peace talks with Iran taking place next week. "The goal of an Iranian meeting is to obtain longstanding peace in the region". US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that American and Iranian officials would hold talks next week, raising hopes of longer-term peace following a fragile ceasefire, even as Tehran insisted it would not abandon its nuclear ambitions, The Times of Israel reported.
