Liverpool must address URGENT concern or risk title defence

Liverpool are looking in good shape ahead of the new season, but signings still need to be made. We aren't talking about anything extraordinary, but a centre-back and a striker are required before the fans can begin to consider retaining the Premier League title the team won just two months ago. Advertisement Shop the LFC Store Nike x Air Max LFC x Nike Air Max Buy Now LFC Retro Shirts LFC Retro Shirts Buy Now Home Jersey LFC Kits Buy Now LFC Nike Training LFC Nike Training Buy Now Darwin Nunez might leave, which is a concern since Diogo Jota is sadly no longer with us, and that would leave the forward options in a precarious position. We might see Jayden Danns promoted to the first team, but Arne Slot's plans are still being arranged`since pre-season has only just begun. Even if the Uruguayan remains on Merseyside, you feel as though recruits are necessary, but as we have all seen throughout this summer, the options available feel expensive for the level they're at. But elsewhere, Liverpool have an even bigger concern that doesn't seem to be generating quite the same amount of attention and that is indeed the centre-back position. It's worrying me greatly. Advertisement Liverpool need defenders this summer The Reds essentially played with three centre-backs last season - Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarrel Quansah - while Joe Gomez was sidelines for the most part with lingering injury concerns. From the start of that campaign, it was clear that Slot didn't rate Quansah and so his move to Leverkusen feels as though it's beneficial for all parties. But we've now in a frightful position. Someone has to come in to replace the England U21 Euros winner, and ideally they should be homegrown, so that the quota is met - which is an underrated thing that clubs have to abide by. Advertisement The candidate for that position is Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace, who is a few years older, but he is indeed homegrown, he has great leadership qualities as the Eagles' captain and his ability is extremely impressive, making him an essential part of England's international team moving forward. But the London club seem to want around £40m-50m and when he's only got one year left on his deal, that is a bitter pill for Liverpool's recruitment team to swallow. We might wait until next year. So the replacement for Quansah is currently on hold, which is major concern number one. The second is that Konate is set to be out of contract next summer, he is currently unwilling to sign a new deal and Real Madrid are looking at potentially signing him, either for a fee or eventually for free. Advertisement Allowing him to leave for nothing, just like what happened with Trent Alexander-Arnold, doesn't sit right, but the alternative is to sell him this summer if he is destined to play elsewhere in the future. Of the two reliable centre-backs we have, one is Van Dijk who is getting older and might only be around for the next two years, and the other is Konate who is still contemplating things. The obvious way to proceed is to buy two new centre-backs so that the stocks are secure regardless. But if we're honest, Liverpool are staring down the barrel of potentially not even signing one. All signs suggest that Quansah will be replaced by someone, but as well all know, the problems will not end there unless Konate agrees to a new contract - a five-deal has reportedly been rejected. This piece isn't necessarily to suggest any different solutions to the problem. If it were me, I'd have signed Guehi by now and Liverpool would at least have one concern wrapped up and dealt with. Advertisement But as we know, Liverpool have far more considerations to factor in and so that deal hasn't been agreed yet. Will someone be brought in? I'd expect so, but who that might be is a whole other story. Nonetheless, it cannot be understated how crucial that piece of business is. Liverpool will be hoping to retain their Premier League title. Without a legitimate third centre-back, that won't happen.

Liverpool stars respond after Quansah leaves for Leverkusen

Quansah's Exit Marks Emotional Chapter for Academy Graduate Amidst the flurry of arrivals, including the record-breaking deal for Florian Wirtz and notable additions like Freddie Woodman and Milos Kerkez, one departure has resonated differently. On Wednesday, Liverpool confirmed the transfer of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. It was a move long expected but still poignant. Advertisement Quansah, a product of the club's youth system, had always felt like a player on the brink. Though minutes were sparse under Slot, his performances when called upon suggested a defender capable of growing into a consistent top-flight presence. One such occasion came in the 2-1 win over Brighton in April 2024, a performance Alexis Mac Allister described as 'amazing.' That moment now stands as one of his final high points in a Liverpool shirt. Despite being underutilised, his departure is not without warmth. His farewell message on Instagram was heartfelt, a reflection of deep roots in the club he joined as a boy. Gakpo's Gesture Speaks for the Dressing Room In a modern football world oversaturated by performative goodbyes and PR-filtered tributes, Cody Gakpo's response stood out precisely because of its simplicity. A single fire emoji followed by a heart, posted in response to Quansah's message, said what it needed to. Respect, admiration and a silent nod from a teammate who had clearly taken notice. photo IMAGO Advertisement It is moments like these, quiet yet rich with meaning, that paint the real portrait of Liverpool's evolving squad. Behind the tactical analyses and transfer speculation lie human relationships and the passing of formative moments. Quansah leaves not with a sense of failure, but with the blessing of those he shared the pitch with. Liverpool's Evolving Shape Under Slot As Liverpool enter the second summer of significant transition, Quansah's departure is another signpost along the route to a redefined identity. While Gakpo remains firmly in the spotlight, serving as a link between the Klopp era and whatever form Slot's side takes next, others move on. Liverpool may not have seen the best of Jarell Quansah, but Leverkusen might. For now, the only comment from one of his closest teammates was two emojis. Somehow, that was enough.

Leverkusen Secure Quansah from Liverpool

TDT | Manama Bayer Leverkusen have signed England Under-21 defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool on a five-year deal. Though official fees remain undisclosed, reports suggest the transfer could reach £35 million including add-ons. Quansah, 22, graduated from Liverpool's academy and made 58 appearances since his senior debut in the 2023-24 season. He was also part of England's victorious Under-21 European Championship squad this year. Leverkusen's Sporting Director Simon Rolfes praised Quansah's pace, agility, and skill, highlighting him as one of England's top defensive talents. Leverkusen, runners-up in the Bundesliga last season, recently appointed Erik ten Hag as head coach. The club also sold Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool, with Wirtz's transfer valued at around £100 million plus bonuses.

Liverpool defender Quansah signs for Bayer Leverkusen

MUNICH, Germany: Centre-half Jarell Quansah has joined Bayer Leverkusen from Premier League champions Liverpool for a reported club record fee, the Bundesliga side announced on Wednesday. According to British and German press, the transfer fee for the 22-year-old could go up to 40 million euros ($47 million), including 10 million euros in add-ons. German specialist media Kicker and The Athletic also reported the inclusion of a 60-million-euros buy-back clause in the contract, which Liverpool could activate from summer 2027 to re-sign Quansah. "We are very happy to be able to sign Jarell Quansah, one of the most promising English central defenders," said Leverkusen managing director of sport Simon Rolfes. "He made a very impressive contribution to a Liverpool defence full of world-class players. Jarell will give our defence extra dynamism, tempo and strength." Quansah becomes the most expensive signing in Leverkusen's history, following on from the previous record arrival of midfielder Kerem Demirbay for 32 million euros in 2019. The 2025 European under-21 champion with England joined Liverpool's academy as a five-year-old, and rose through the ranks before making his first-team debut in 2023. He went on to appear 58 times for the Merseysiders, winning the League Cup in 2022 and 2024, as well as the Premier League title last season. After playing second fiddle to first-choice defensive duo Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate for much of the 2024/25 campaign, Quansah arrives at Leverkusen to replace departed former captain Jonathan Tah at the heart of the Bundesliga club's defence. "The ambitious targets here were clearly explained to me during the negotiations. It's a great role and challenge for me to be part of the current Leverkusen rebuild," said Quansah. After creating league history by winning the Bundesliga undefeated in 2024, Leverkusen endured a difficult title defence last term, finishing 13 points adrift of winners Bayern Munich. Stars of their league-and-cup double from two seasons years ago, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, have recently gone in the opposite direction from Quansah, joining Liverpool from Leverkusen this close-season.— AFP

Leverkusen signs England Under-21 defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool

LEVERKUSEN: Bayer Leverkusen has replaced former captain Jonathan Tah with Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a club-record signing for a defender. The 22-year-old Quansah signed a contract through June 2030 and will wear Tah's former No. 4 shirt, the Bundesliga club said Wednesday. The reported fee of more than 30 million euros ($35.3 million) rising to 40 million ($47 million) with bonuses corresponds roughly with what Liverpool agreed to pay Leverkusen for Netherlands right back Jeremie Frimpong in May. Liverpool reportedly secured a buy-back option for Quansah for more than 60 million euros ($70.6 million) after he has spent two seasons at Leverkusen. Leverkusen also sold star player Florian Wirtz to Liverpool last month for a Bundesliga-record fee. Tah switched to league rival Bayern Munich once the season concluded after declining to extend his contract. He had spent a decade at Leverkusen and was a key part of the team which won the Bundesliga and German Cup unbeaten in 2023-24. Quansah won the Under-21 European Championship with England last week. But he was unable to establish himself as a regular starter at Liverpool ahead of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.
