Cyclists spotted on Montreal's Metropolitan Expressway
Montrealers are scratching their heads after video emerged of a group of cyclists on the Metropolitan Expressway (A-40). How did these Montreal cyclists wind up on a major highway? There are questions as to how a group of cyclists wound up on the Metropolitan Expressway (Highway 40) in Montreal, trying to cross near the Decarie Expressway (Highway 15). A video posted online, caught from a driver's dashcam, shows five cyclists cutting across the heavily trafficked highway, where it is prohibited to ride a bike. Quebec provincial police confirmed that a call was made about the incident, but noted that officers did not locate the group and the case will not be investigated. There is an $80 fine for riding on a highway. Velo Québec Executive Director Jean-François Rheault said they likely got lost. 'Human mistakes happen,' he said, adding that they were lucky. 'It could've created other impacts.' The video comes after two people were struck in separate collisions; a 79-year-old man was hit by an SUV in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood, and a 28-year-old woman was hit by an 18-wheeler in the Old Port. Dashcam footage shows the woman apparently riding through a stop sign. Rheault said more should be done to keep road users safe. 'Things that would help: adjusting the speed in the surroundings, also following all obligations,' said Rheault. 'If we care about safety, that's where the infrastructure comes in - add another layer of safety.' Velo-Quebec also launched a campaign last June to remind cyclists to watch for pedestrians, especially near bus stops, schools and shared spaces.

Mom of missing Montreal toddler ‘in great distress,' will return to court for bail hearing in July
A three-year-old Montreal girl seen in St. Albert, Ont. moments after being found following a four-day search on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. (Courtesy/Noovo Info) A bail hearing has been scheduled for next month for the mother of a three-year-old Montreal girl who was missing for three days before being found on an Ontario highway. The toddler was found Wednesday on the side of Highway 417 near St. Albert, Ont. after her mother reported her missing on Sunday. An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) drone spotted her alone after police believe she spent the entire time all by herself with no food or water. The girl's mother appeared in court again on Friday at the Valleyfield courthouse after she was arrested by Quebec provincial police Monday evening and charged with one count of child abandonment. The Crown prosecutor requested and was granted a publication ban to protect the young girl's identity. As such, the name of the girl's mother, or anything else that would identify her, cannot be published. The Crown is opposing her release from custody. A judge scheduled a two-day bail hearing on July 3 at the Valleyfield courthouse as the prosecution waits to receive more evidence from police. The accused mother was remanded into custody at the Leclerc detention centre for women in Laval and was ordered not to communicate with the victim or her father. Quebec police say three-year-old missing girl found in Ontario needs rest, privacy
Capt. Benoit Richard of the Quebec provincial police speaks to media after a three-year-old missing for four days was found alive, in St. Albert, Ont., Wednesday, June 18, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christopher Katsarov MONTREAL — Police are asking the public to stop sharing the name and photo of the three-year-old Montreal girl found in Ontario after going missing for four days. Quebec provincial police say citizens were instrumental in the search for the missing child, who was allegedly abandoned by her mother near Casselman, Ont., on Sunday afternoon. She was spotted on Wednesday by an Ontario Provincial Police drone along Highway 417, about 120 kilometres southwest of her Montreal home. Police say the girl has been through a difficult ordeal and needs to rest — and regain her anonymity. Quebec provincial police say their social media posts and video updates about the search for the girl were widely shared and viewed millions of times. The girl's 34-year-old mother, Rachel-Ella Todd, has been charged with unlawful abandonment of a child and returns to court on Friday.
