Massive Asian Supermarket 99 Ranch Is Making its NYC Debut

New York's always been a hotbed of pan-Asian supermarkets, from Queens-born Korean supermarket chain H Mart to smaller Japanese specialty markets like Sunrise Mart. And now, a big new contender from California is making its New York City debut. 99 Ranch is opening its first New York City proper location in Queens, along with its food hall Eat Up. Both are opening in Flushing at 37-11 Main Street, between 37th and 38th avenues, as reported by the Real Deal. There is no scheduled opening date as of yet. 99 Ranch's Flushing market will have 22,000 square feet of space for its wide array of pan-Asian foods, snacks, products, produce, meats, seafood, baked goods, condiments, and much more. And then upstairs will be its food hall, Eat Up, which will have 22 food stalls, plus 6,880 square feet of dining room space for 158 seats, per plans by the Kinetic Real Estate Group. Eater has reached out for more information. The Main Street address had most recently been a location of the national chain Hong Kong Supermarket, which closed in 2024 (the Chinatown location remains open); and, before that, Busy Bee Mall. 99 Ranch started in 1984 in Westminster by Roger Chen. And since then, the company has grown into one of the biggest supermarkets in the country. It's expanded with more than 60 locations across the country. The three closest stores to New York City are in New Jersey (Jersey City and Hackensack) and on Long Island (Westbury). The company just opened its newest location in Aliso Viejo, California, back in April. See More: Coming Attractions NYC Restaurant News

50 Cent Offers Zohran Mamdani Over $250K To Leave New York: 'I'm Telling Trump What He Said Too!'

Zohran Mamdani was the young, wide-eyed politician with big promises just a week ago. Still, after establishing himself by defeating former New York governor Andrew Cuomo in the democratic mayoral primary, he's got a set of new enemies. Atop that list is rapper 50 Cent, who unsurprisingly isn't happy that Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, would be hitting New York's richest with a higher tax rate. The Queens-born rapper posted a clip of the mayoral hopeful sitting down with The Breakfast Club and detailing his idea of raising tax rates, similar to those in New Jersey, to make NYC less reliant on President Donald Trump. 'What I've proposed is we raise $10 billion to pay for our entire economic agenda and start to Trump proof our city because we know he'll use federal funding as leverage over this city,' Mamdani says. 'And we will do so in two key ways. The first is to match the state's top corporate tax rate to that of New Jersey. We are at 7.25%, they are at 11.5%. Corporations can pay it over there, they can pay it over here.' For that new tax rate to bring in even more money to NYC, Mamdani says the mandate wouldn't just be for New York-based companies, but for any that do business of any kind in the five boroughs. The second tax-based idea on Mamdani's checklist is a tax increase for the rich. In the process of explaining it, he even name-dropped 50 Cent as an example of someone whose pockets will be a little lighter. He continued, 'The second is taxing the top 1% of New Yorkers. We're talking about people who make $1 million a year or more, taxing them by a flat 2% tax rate increase. I know 50 Cent is listening, he's not going to be very happy about this, he tends to not like this tax policy, but I want to be very clear, this is about $20,000 a year.' 50 Cent wiggles his way into any pop culture moment he pleases, but by Mamdani outright mentioning him, it was only a matter of time before he chimed in with criticism on his Instagram page. 'Where did he come from whose friend is this? I'm not feeling this plan no,' 50 Cent wrote as the caption of the now-deleted post. 'I will give him $258,750 and a first class one way ticket away from NY. I'm telling Trump what he said too!' This wouldn't be the first time he ran and told Trump something. He tried to pull a similar move when Diddy's team suggested approaching the POTUS for a possible pardon regarding his sex trafficking trial. Now that Mamdani has defeated Cuomo, he looks to take on the current mayor, Eric Adams, who is running as an independent, as well as Republican mainstay Curtis Sliwa in the general election. 50 Cent Offers Zohran Mamdani Over $250K To Leave New York: 'I'm Telling Trump What He Said Too!' was originally published on

Rapper 50 Cent offers NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani $258K to get lost: ‘Where did he come from? I'm telling Trump'

American rapper 50 Cent is ready to cough up a big amount to get rid of NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, even offering a one-way, first-class ticket out of the state. The India-origin assemblyman, a vocal left-winger, recently caught heat over his tax-the-rich plan. The Big Apple mayoral hopeful went as far as name-dropping 50 Cent while pushing his agenda. That didn't sit well with the Queens-born rapper, who reposted the clip on Instagram, fired back asking, 'Who is this guy? Where did he come from?' and warned he's 'telling Trump' what this Democrat's up to. The video referenced, comes from The Breakfast Club podcast, where Mamdani pitched taxing corporations raking in millions in profit. Also read: Zohran Mamdani, New York City's next potential mayor, once told mom Mira Nair to direct The Namesake instead of Harry Potter 4 and cast Kal Penn Mamdani, who recently beat Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, made his podcast appearance earlier this month. There, he spoke about his plan to raise $10 billion for the city by increasing corporate taxes and imposing a 2% tax hike on New York's top 1% earners, meaning all those making over $1 million a year. 'We're talking about corporations that are making millions of dollars, not in revenue, but in profit,' Mamdani said during the June 11 interview. 'And the second is taxing the top 1% of New Yorkers. We're talking about people who make a million dollars a year or more, taxing them just by a flat 2% tax increase,' he said on one of the most listened-to radio shows in the state. Adding that his goal is to 'Trump-proof' NYC by funding things like public transport and small business support, he said, 'I know if 50 Cent is listening, he's not going to be happy about this. He tends to not like this tax policy, but I want to be very clear, this is about $20,000 a year.' Now, weeks later, the rapper clapped back on Instagram. Sharing the video, he wrote, 'Where did he come from? Whose friend is this? I'm not feeling this plan. No. I will give him $258,750 and a first-class one-way ticket away from NY. I'm telling Trump what he said, too!' A post shared by 50 Cent (@50cent) That 'telling Trump' part was a cheeky callback to Jackson's most recent comment about 'ratting' on Diddy to Trump, after reports claimed that the President has not ruled out pardoning Diddy, who's currently caught up in a sex trafficking and racketeering investigation. For the unversed, 50 Cent has been vocal about taxes, and in 2020, even sided with Trump when Biden spoke about tax hikes that would've meant 62% taxes for top earners in NYC. At the time, 50 posted: 'WHAT THE F–K! (VOTE FOR TRUMP) IM OUT. F–K NEW YORK. The KNICKS never win anyway. I don't care Trump doesn't like Black people. 62%—are you out of your f–***ing mind?' Mamdani, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist, ousted Cuomo after securing 43.5 percent of the vote, with 90 percent of ballots counted. If he wins, he would be New York's first Muslim mayor.

50 Cent offers Zohran Mamdani $258K to leave NYC over tax-the-rich plan

Rapper 50 Cent is firing back at NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani after the Democratic socialist proposed a tax hike on wealthy residents and name-dropped the Queens-born hip hop mogul during a podcast appearance. In a fiery Instagram post on Wednesday, 50 Cent — whose real name is Curtis Jackson — offered Mamdani $258,750 and a first-class, one-way ticket out of New York. 'Where did he come from? Whose friend is this? I'm not feeling this plan,' the rapper wrote. Mamdani recently appeared on 'The Breakfast Club' podcast, where he outlined his proposal to raise taxes on New Yorkers earning over $1 million annually by 2%. 'I know if 50 Cent is listening, he's not going to be happy about this,' Mamdani quipped during the interview, citing Jackson's known opposition to such tax policies. Jackson, who has an estimated net worth nearing $1 billion, didn't take the remark lightly. 'I'm telling Trump what he said too!' he added on social media, alongside a thinking-face emoji. Mamdani, who defeated Andrew Cuomo in a shocking primary upset, defended the plan by stating it would target corporate profits and benefit public transit and small businesses. The clash has sparked wider political debate, with critics warning that Mamdani's progressive agenda could alienate high earners and business owners. Mamdani's campaign has not responded to 50 Cent's remarks. The NYC mayoral race continues to draw national attention as celebrity voices weigh in on issues impacting the city's economic future.

MTA renews anti-subway surfing efforts with ad campaign

Transit officials are hoping a new ad campaign, a new spokesman and a few subway car modifications will continue to drive down subway surfing deaths. The MTA relaunched its 'Ride Inside, Stay Alive' anti-subway surfing campaign on Wednesday, this time with the support of Queens-born professional BMX bike rider Nigel Sylvester. Like last year's initiative, the push involves a series of recorded subway announcements — by Sylvester, as well as by New York City schoolchildren — about the dangers of riding on the outside of a subway train, plus a series of digital posters displayed on subway and platform screens. 'Subway surfing is going to get you injured or killed,' Sylvester says in a subway announcement recorded for the campaign. 'It's pretty simple: Don't do it.' 'I believe I can relate to these kids,' Sylvester said Wednesday, when asked how a professional thrill seeker can be a role model for safety. 'Kids can relate to me, and we can have a meaningful dialogue.' Subway surfing has been a persistent, deadly problem, with six deaths attributed to the practice last year and five deaths in 2023. Another 25 people were injured while riding outside of trains in those two years. The overwhelming majority of subway surfers are teenagers. So far this year, one person — a 13-year-old boy — has died from subway surfing, succumbing to his injuries days after falling off the top of a No. 7 train in Queens. 'As a father of three children, I can't imagine seeing my child on [top of] a train as that train barrels down the track,' said NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow. 'I was a manager here on the [No.] 7 line,' Crichlow continued. 'I've seen on a first-hand basis what happens to the children when they come into contact with a fixed, immovable object.' The revamped campaign focuses not just on the dangers of subway surfing, but on the toll that kids' deaths take on surviving families and friends. A three-display ad unveiled Wednesday tells the fictionalized story, in comic-book form, of a 12-year-old who falls from a train, and the horrors his death inflicts on his friends, his mother and the EMT who responds to the scene. The MTA's chief customer officer, Shanifa Rieara, said the campaign involved 43 such ads that would be rolled out over the next 12 months. Other announcements focused on the senselessness of a subway surfing death. 'The rush from subway surfing is fleeting — the consequences are real,' Ahana Chandra, a student at Stuyvesant High School, said in her subway announcement. 'Six people died subway surfing last year, and for what?' The ad campaign comes amid a series of other efforts to curb thrill-seeking subway deaths. The transit agency is in the early stages of testing add-on barriers to train cars in an effort make it harder to climb up to the roof. Rieara also noted that the MTA's efforts to get subway-surfing videos taken down from social media continues. So far this year, she said, roughly 1,800 such videos have been removed by platforms like X, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
