Teenager dies in e-scooter crash in Far North Queensland

A teenage boy has died after falling from an e-scooter near Cairns in Far North Queensland. Emergency services were called to Strattmann Street in Mareeba about 10:45pm on Tuesday, where paramedics believed the boy fell from an e-scooter. The boy suffered critical head injuries and the Queensland Ambulance Service said he died at the scene. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating. The Queensland government last month announced it would hold a parliamentary inquiry into e-scooter and e-bike safety in response to growing concerns from parents and public health experts. A report is required to be tabled by March 30 next year. Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory are the only two states and territories that allow e-scooter use for those under 16 years. Jamieson Trauma Institute data shows presentations to 30 Queensland emergency departments have increased to 150 per month, up from 100 per month two years ago. An 18-year-old rider died earlier this month after crashing an electric scooter on the Flinders Highway in Townsville in the state's north.

Jewellery store worker rushed to hospital after being struck in head with hammer during armed robbery in Chermside, north of Brisbane

A jewellery store worker has been rushed to hospital with a serious head injury after being struck by a hammer during a horrifying armed robbery north of Brisbane. Initial police investigations indicate four men wearing masks, while armed with hammers and metal bars, charged into a jewellery store on Gympie Road in Chermside about 5pm on Tuesday. Police said the group "smashed a number of glass cabinets and stole a large amount of jewellery" before fleeing the scene in a grey Honda CR-V station wagon. Detectives believe the vehicle was stolen from an address in Calamvale in Brisbane's southern suburbs on Sunday. "A male employee, who was working at the time, was struck in the head with a hammer during the incident," police said in a statement. "He was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a stable condition." A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman told the man suffered a "serious head injury". Paramedics were tasked to the scene about 5.10pm before transporting the worker to hospital. A crime scene has been declared as investigations into the armed robbery continue. Police have urged anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of the area in the moments before or after the incident to come forward. Four rescued from Hoskyn Island after boat begins to sink

Four people have been rescued from a remote island on the southern Great Barrier Reef after their boat began to sink. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it detected a distress beacon from the recreational boat near Hoskyn Island about 4:30am on Sunday. The boat was about 55 kilometres north-east of 1770 in the Gladstone region. A spokesperson for Bundaberg's LifeFlight Rescue helicopter said three adults and a teenager had been out fishing on Saturday when they took shelter on the island because of poor weather. During the night, they discovered their boat was also taking in water. The group were flown to Lady Musgrave Island and then transferred back to the mainland by boat. The Queensland Ambulance Service said no-one was injured or required medical treatment. The AMSA said the event served as an important reminder of the importance of carrying distress beacons.
