Chandrababu Naidu unveils ₹1,500 crpre road development plan

In a significant push to modernise Andhra Pradesh's road infrastructure, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced the construction of 2,000 kilometers of new roads at a cost of ₹1,000 crore and the repair of damaged roads worth ₹500 crore. The Chief Minister directed officials to expedite cost estimations and initiate the tendering process immediately. Presiding over a review meeting with the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department at the State Secretariat on Thursday, Mr. Naidu emphasised that road repairs must be carried out continuously, even during the monsoon season, to ensure early completion. He expressed concern over the poor state of roads, blaming years of neglect under the previous administration. The Chief Minister has set a 15-day deadline for officials to submit a comprehensive report detailing roads requiring repair, new road proposals, and maintenance needs. He stressed the need for adopting cutting-edge technologies in road construction to reduce costs and enhance quality. Officials briefed the Chief Minister that 20,000 km of roads have already been repaired to make them pothole-free. 'Our roads must meet the quality standards of national highways,' the Chief Minister asserted, adding that construction of all roads should commence by November, immediately after the monsoon ends. Details regarding contractors responsible for construction and maintenance must be made publicly available online. Additionally, CCTV cameras are to be installed every 50 km along major roads, and all road maintenance work will be assigned to contractors. Mr. Naidu also called for preventive measures to avoid monsoon-related damages. Public-Private Partnership to play a key role Officials informed Mr. Naidu that the state currently has 12,653 km of state highways. Of this, 260 roads stretching over 10,200 km are suitable for development under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Under Phase 1A, 18 high-density roads totaling 1,332 km have been proposed. Phase 1B includes 67 roads exceeding 40 km each, collectively spanning 3,854 km. Another 175 roads, each between 20 and 40 km in length, have been proposed under Phase 2, covering a total of 5,039 km. Two strategic roads—Yelamanchili to Gajuwaka and Gajulamandyam to Sri City (SEZ), totaling 115 km—have also been identified for PPP development. The Chief Minister directed officials to conduct feasibility studies and submit a final report on these proposals.

CM Naidu orders CCTV every 50 km; Rs 1,500 crore for AP road upgrade, repairs during monsoon

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to install CCTV cameras every 50 km along all roads to monitor vehicular movement. Chairing a review meeting with officials of the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department at the State Secretariat on Thursday, the Chief Minister instructed them to construct 2,000 kilometers of new state and district roads with an estimated budget of Rs 1,000 crore. He said that cost estimations and the tender process must begin immediately. An additional Rs 500 crore will be allocated for repairing damaged roads across the state, and the Chief Minister emphasised that these repairs must continue even during the monsoon and be completed at the earliest. Seeking updates on the condition of roads across the state, the Chief Minister pointed out that the previous government had grossly neglected road construction and maintenance over the past five years, leading to widespread deterioration. The Chief Minister directed officials to submit a comprehensive report within 15 days, outlining the roads that require repairs, the new roads that need to be laid, and those that require regular maintenance. He noted that traditional methods of road construction are not only financially burdensome but also compromise quality.

Work begins on Umeta bridge after safety concerns

Vadodara: Following the collapse of the Gambhira bridge on July 9, authorities have restricted heavy vehicle movement on the nearby Umeta bridge — also in a dilapidated condition — and issued a work order for urgent repairs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Umeta bridge, also known as the Sindhrot bridge, connects Vadodara and Anand districts across the Mahi river. Officials said preparations are underway for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new two-lane bridge to be constructed adjacent to the existing structure. "The parapet and open bars of the Umeta bridge's pier cap were found damaged. Based on the bridge consultant's suggestions, a repair work order was issued to the contractor," an official said. The repair plan includes work on the bridge's parapet, rust removal, steel protection, micro concrete repairs and installation of W-beam crash barriers. The additional district magistrate of Vadodara issued a notification restricting the movement of heavy vehicles on the bridge, citing safety concerns. Locals have repeatedly raised alarms about the deteriorating condition of the Umeta — similar to the now-collapsed Gambhira bridge. Both bridges were constructed around the same time by the same agency and follow a similar design. Deputy executive engineer of the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, Rajeshwari Nair, confirmed that the DPR for the new bridge is in progress.

JC Navya urges landowners to cooperate in road widening

Kurnool: Joint Collector Dr B Navya has appealed to landowners affected by the widening of the 2.3-kilometre stretch of the 340-C road passing through Kurnool city to extend their full cooperation to the Municipal Corporation. On Friday morning, Dr Navya held a meeting at the Kurnool Municipal Council Hall with the owners of buildings and plots situated along the road stretch between Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Circle and Sri Sai Gardens on Nandikotkur Road, who will be impacted by the proposed road widening. Speaking on the occasion, the Joint Collector noted that, following the request of the affected landowners during a meeting held four months ago, the government had agreed to reduce the road width from the originally planned 120 feet to 100 feet. Given this concession, she urged all property owners to promptly submit their relevant documents to the Municipal Corporation and cooperate fully with officials. Dr Navya informed the attendees that compensation would be provided in the form of Transferable Development Rights (TDR) bonds for vacant land, and cash payments for structures based on their plinth area, as evaluated by the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department. These valuations are aligned with the revised market value set by the Sub-Registrar's office in February this year. Kurnool Municipal Commissioner Ravindra Babu, who also addressed the meeting, reiterated that the government had already agreed to the 100-feet road width in favour of landowners. He urged those who have not yet submitted their documents to do so without delay. He mentioned that so far, 90 landowners had submitted their papers, and called upon the remaining owners to take immediate action. Town Planning Officer Pradeep Kumar and several landowners attended the meeting.
