10,000 classrooms constructed in State under Professor Anbazhagan School Development Scheme, says Minister

School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said that under the Professor Anbazhagan School Development Scheme, 10,000 classrooms were constructed in the State at a cost of ₹7,500 crore. The School Education Minister and Tourism Minister R. Rajendran on Tuesday inaugurated new buildings at Elampillai Government Boys Higher Secondary School, which was constructed under the Namma School Namma Ooru Palli scheme at ₹2 crore by a private firm. At the function, Mr. Rajendran said the Chief Minister was giving more importance to the Education Department and allocating more funds and implementing numerous special schemes. Due to this, the percentage of students completing higher education had increased and Tamil Nadu topped the country in terms of more students going for higher education, the Minister added. Listing out the schemes implemented by the government, Mr. Anbil Mahesh said students studying in government schools from tribal areas were getting seats in IITs in Chennai and Pune, and NIT in Tiruchi. The government schools are a proud identity and not a poverty identity, he added. As Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said, students should study and education alone lifted them. The Chief Minister started the Namma Ooru Palli scheme by providing his own money of ₹5 lakh. Through various companies, buildings worth ₹658.67 crore were constructed in schools till April 2025, the Minister added. In the function, a private hospital announced that they were providing ₹1 crore for the scheme. District Collector R. Brindha Devi, MP T.M. Selvaganapathi, MLA E.R. Eswaran, Chief Educational Officer M. Kabir and officials participated.

12 lakh people in Salem district will be inducted into DMK, says Minister

Tourism Minister R. Rajendran said that under the Oraniyil Tamil Nadu, DMK functionaries will meet people irrespective of their political affiliations and strive to induct 12 lakh people into the party. On the Oraniyil Tamil Nadu, the Minister told reporters that based on the instructions from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, DMK functionaries and cadre would visit every house in the district and explain the anti-democratic activities of the Union government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from July 3. MPs T.M. Selvaganapathi and S.R. Sivalingam would inaugurate the initiative. The party cadre would explain the achievements of the DMK government to people. They would be inducted only if they wished to, the Minister said and added that in the 11 Assembly constituencies in Salem district, they aimed to induct 40% of voters, that would be 12 lakh people. Stating that the Union government continuously gave trouble to the Tamil Nadu government, the Minister said DMK was a democratic force and would gather all people as one team and fight against the Centre.

Tourism Minister releases fingerlings in lake in Salem

Tourism Minister R. Rajendran on Monday released fingerlings in the Nainathal Lake near Muthunaickenpatti in Salem under the River Ranching of Fish Seeds Scheme, to boost production of native fish varieties. On behalf of the Fisheries Department, the Minister released 20,000 fingerlings in the lake in the presence of District Collector R. Brindha Devi. The Minister told reporters that for the year 2025-2026, four lakh fingerlings will be released in 15 water bodies, including Nainathal, M. Chettipatti, Selathampatti, Thalavaipatti, and S. Parapatti lakes, that come under Salem, Omalur, Tharamangalam, Veerapandi, and Ayothiyapattinam panchayat unions. In the 2025-2026 Agriculture Budget, an announcement was made on boosting fish production in the lakes under the control of the Rural Development Department. In 2024-2025, two lakh fingerlings were released in water bodies in the Salem district. Through this stocking project, fish production has been increased in rural areas, he said. Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) P. Sukumar, Fisheries Department Assistant Director Uma Kalaiselvi and officials from concerned departments participated.

Minister launches 111 new mini bus services in Salem district

Under the New Comprehensive Mini Bus Scheme 2024, a total of 53 new mini buses and 59 extended route services began operations across the district on Monday. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the scheme from Thanjavur via video conferencing, following which Minister for Tourism R. Rajendran flagged off the buses at the Old Bus Stand in the presence of District Collector R. Brindha Devi. The Minister said the scheme would primarily benefit residents in rural areas. Services launched in each division were, Salem West Region - 4 new mini bus services, 18 route-extended services, Salem East Region - 11 new services, 7 extended routes, Salem South Region - 2 new services, 5 extended routes, Sankari Region - 10 new services, 6 extended routes, Attur Region - 22 new services, 10 extended routes, and Mettur Region - 4 new services, 12 extended routes. Mayor A. Ramachandran, former MLA S.R. Sivalingam, Assistant Collector (Trainee) Vivek Yadav, and officials were also present.

Over 1 lakh saplings planted across Virudhunagar

Massive sapling planting events were taken up across Virudhunagar district on Thursday on the occasion of World Environment Day. Virudhunagar Collector V. P. Jeyaseelan inaugurated sapling planting drive at the Eco-Park set up by Ramco Cements at Pandalgudi. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that a total of 1,12,350 saplings were planted in 360 places in the 11 blcoks in the district. The theme of the World Enviroment day this year was on ending plastic pollution. 'The present developmental activities were posing a major challenge to biodiversity. Climate change, health issues, food and water security and sustainable resources could be retrieved only based on nature-based solutions,' he added. Virudhunagar district had only 16.8% of green coverage and efforts are being taken to increase it to 33% by planting 1 crore saplings under Green Tamil Nadu Mission. A consultation on the need to preserve biodiversity at all levels was held on the occasion. District Revenue Officer R. Rajendran, Special DRO (Land Acquisition for SIPCOT), Sengottaiyan, Project Director (District Rural Development Agency), Dhandapani, Sub-Collector, Sivakasi, N. Priya Ravichandran, governing council member of Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, Nirmala Raja, were among those who were present.
