I won't be involved in the running of Siwelele FC

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie says he will not be involved in the running of Siwelele FC. The Citizen reports McKenzie had to clarify his role in the new club after his son Calvin Le' John bought the status of SuperSport United for a reported fee of R50m and renamed it Siwelele FC. 'Siwelele FC is a very small part of my family's portfolio and there's bigger things which I was not involved in. Why will I get involved in that? I would have been involved as a supporter, as a minister I'm not allowed to get involved,' McKenzie told the media as reported by SABC Sport. 'I'm just happy Siwelele Samasele is back in the Free State. My heart breaks when I saw the lies that people of the Free State have been told, every year, believe me. Every year there's some failed business man that wants to be famous, he'll tell the people, 'I'm bringing Siwelele back' and the people will be happy. 'Every year without fail and when they do bring it back, then they sell it. My son didn't bring it back for financial reasons, it's not gonna pay rent for the family, he brought it back because Siwelele is a culture, it's our heritage, there's something missing in my soul as a Free Stater if Siwelele is not back. 'I will not be involved in the running of Siwelele,' he added.

Community slam delays on broken Zone 7 road

The U-Road next to Zone 7 Stadium is still in bad shape, with no tar and sewage water flowing all over, despite promises to fix it in 2020. Ward 42 Councillor, Ayanda Ngubane of the DA told Sedibeng Ster that about R50m was spent on the project, but the road is still incomplete, and no sewer system was installed. He said building materials were left on site and later stolen. Back in 2020, then Gauteng Minister of Human Settlements, Human Planning, Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs Lebohang Maile said in the legislature that the road would be finished that year. The work of a contractor who was paid more than R19m out of a R33.8m tender was terminated when the job was 85% done. Since then, nothing has changed. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the residents decried the project. 'We're tired of unfinished projects. Where did the money go? Elections are coming, and soon politicians will be back begging for votes,' said one community member. Ngubane said U-Road was supposed to connect Zone 7 Ext 1 to Nguna Road and include a bridge, but that was never built. 'This road has become a crime hotspot, and many people have died here,' he said. He added that the road is now unusable for cars, overgrown with grass and full of sewage. 'The DA will send follow-up questions to the MEC for Roads and Transport to find out when this road will finally be completed.' ‘He's a good kid with good intentions': McKenzie thanks son for Siwelele FC deal

Sport, arts and culture minister Gayton McKenzie has expressed his gratitude to his son, Calvin Le John, for purchasing SuperSport United and rebranding it as Siwelele Football Club. SuperSport was sold to a Bloemfontein-based consortium, with Le John part of the team that secured the R50m deal. The sale awaits approval from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) executive committee. In a Facebook post, McKenzie thanked his son, highlighting the emotional connection his family has with the 'Siwelele' name, which was the nickname previously associated with Bloemfontein Celtic. 'You were born five hours after I was jailed for 17 years,' McKenzie said. 'You grew up seeing me through jail bars. You never visited me on the weekends of the home games of Siwelele because you and your grandpa would go and watch the games religiously, just like me and him when I was young. 'I remember you told me that it brings you closer to me emotionally, knowing that you are doing the same thing I did with my father and your grandfather. You suffered growing up without your dad. I thank God for a powerful mother who stood in the gap. You are the main reason I behaved better because I wanted to come out and didn't want to see you grow up behind jail bars forever.'

WATCH: Major road repairs campaign led by MMC Andile Mngwevu kicks off in Alberton

WATCH: Major road repairs campaign led by MMC Andile Mngwevu kicks off in Alberton MMC for Roads and Transport Planning, Andile Mngwevu, on May 15, led the charge in Nelson Mandela Avenue, Alberton, as part of the newly launched Sivala Ama-Pothole blitz, a comprehensive road maintenance campaign. The city has allocated R50m towards this initiative, aimed at restoring the safety and functionality of local roads. The MMC said the roads will last longer and will require fewer interventions. 'This move to utilise hot mix asphalt means longer durability for our road network and better resistance to wear, reducing the frequency and extent of repairs needed in the future. It further means the overall lifecycle cost of road maintenance will decrease, as the roads will last longer and require fewer interventions,' he said. The campaign includes closing potholes, painting road markings, installing traffic signs, and clearing stormwater systems to prevent further road degradation. 'Ekurhuleni aims to keep our roads in good condition and reduce unsurfaced road backlogs in the next few years,' Mngwevu added. To help repair personnel prioritise the most affected routes, the Roads and Transport Department encouraged the community to report issue areas using the city's hotline and mobile platforms:Call: 0860 543 000 My CoE App Email: Twitter: CoE-Call-Centre At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention.
