Mbuyiseli Madlanga expected to make final ConCourt judgement

JOHANNESBURG - With Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga expected to mark his last day on the Constitutional Court bench, his final judgement will be the much-anticipated battle between Vodacom and Nkosana Makate. Madlanga leaves after serving 17 years on the bench. The acting chief justice will complete his duties at the apex court to take on the task of chairing the Judicial Commission of Inquiry investigating the explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. After a career of a total of 17 years on the bench, Madlanga will hang his robes on Thursday in the Constitutional Court. The court will have a special ceremony in his honour as he says his goodbyes. Madlanga's career on the bench started at the Mthatha High Court in 1996 when he was appointed judge at the young age of 34, making him the youngest judge at the time. In 2001, Madlanga left the bench and returned to the bar as senior counsel but he would eventually return as a judge and was ultimately appointed to the Constitutional Court in 2013. On Thursday, Madlanga will deliver his final judgement involving Vodacom and Please Call Me's Nkosana Makate. The telecommunications giant is challenging the Supreme Court's ruling that said it should pay Makate between R29 and R53 billion instead of its R47 million offer.

Bye bye MultiChoice: R53 billion takeover by French media giant Canal+ approved

French media giant Canal+ has received regulatory approval from South Africa's Competition Tribunal to proceed with its multibillion-rand takeover of MultiChoice, paving the way for one of the most significant media mergers on the African continent. The deal, valued at around R53 billion, will see Canal+ acquire full control of MultiChoice, best known for its DStv and Showmax platforms. While the approval from the Competition Tribunal is a major milestone, the merger still needs clearance from other regulatory bodies, including Icasa, the JSE, the Takeover Regulation Panel, and the Financial Surveillance Department. 'It is a hugely positive step forward in our journey to bring together two iconic media and entertainment companies,' said Canal+ in a statement. As part of the approval, the Tribunal imposed conditions designed to protect South African interests: Ongoing investment in local sports and general entertainment content. Measures to support Historically Disadvantaged Persons (HDPs) and SMEs in the local broadcasting sector. Guarantees to maintain South Africa's influence over content and access decisions through the continued independence of MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd, which services local subscribers. 'We look forward to executing the remaining processes and to building something extraordinary – a global media and entertainment company with Africa at its heart,' said Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice Group. Despite the approval, Canal+ and MultiChoice must still navigate legal and policy hurdles, including South Africa's laws on foreign ownership of broadcasters. As part of the transaction structure, MultiChoice's South African business will be carved out and maintained independently to comply with these restrictions. Customers and viewers are not expected to be affected during the ongoing approval process, and both companies have committed to maintaining current services. Next Stay Close ✕ With the help of 156 donations, they had initially only been able to accomplish half of the goal, but Buck stated that the Sygnia Asset Management employee book club helped them raise the remaining amount. 'We originally set out to raise R100,000, an audacious goal for our first-ever fundraiser, to cover the gap in funding for the 100th library. We ended up with 156 people donating R53,650, an incredible amount. As the campaign ended, we were so ecstatic about the way it went. 'I was proud that we'd raised that much, and The Bookery was so thankful.' He said the employee book club saw their fundraiser because of how many people shared and reposted it, and then surprised them by donating the remaining R46,350 to help them reach R100,000. Buck stated that when he first approached The Bookery, he told them this was an experiment and really didn't know if they could raise even any of the money. 'However, our community came around to it from the moment I had the idea.' He said Leewin Chen, a Cape Town Silent Book Club regular and professional videographer, offered to make a video for the campaign, and partners like Waterfall Farms, Penguin Random House, UCOOK, T-shirt Bed Co., and Rosetta Coffee sponsored their giveaway. They raised nearly R10,000 at a Silent Book Club gathering before even putting it on social media. 'The Bookery team and I were so ecstatic when we received the email (from the employee book club) about it. We went and spent some time with them at one of their book club meetings, and it was so lovely, and you can tell that literacy is a big passion of theirs. 'I'm so proud of the way people came together on this, and it inspires me about the difference we can make going forward. When you have a great group of people with a shared passion and a sense of community, you can really make a difference,' Buck said. Cape Town Silent Book Club organiser, Shawn Buck, said he is blown they were able to achieve it. Image: Supplied The Bookery's spokesperson, Jacki Sands, said they did have the base funding for the 100th library covered, thanks to the donation from the MacFarlane Family Foundation, but that it did not cover all their needs for the library. 'The extra money that we got from Silent Book Club's fundraiser is very welcome. We are so grateful to Sygnia Asset Management for coming alongside and filling in the rest of the balance that helped Shawn achieve his goal. That was absolutely amazing. 'We feel that is what true community is about, and that they understand what the bookery does, and believe in our cause. They believe that what we're doing is impactful in the literacy landscape, which has us overjoyed that we have such fantastic partners.' Sands said that they strongly believe in collaboration and that it is the partnerships which propel their work forward. 'They don't only bring the funds, they also bring us access to other networks, skills and expertise that aid our vision and mission. We are extremely excited that somebody saw value in the work that we do. 'It gives us that extra boost we need to put that 100th library in place. Up to now, we've created 99 libraries and supported other library projects, so we've had a bit of time to look back, see what we have been doing historically, and then put better processes in place,' Sands said. 'It's an exciting time for us, and we're just grateful for everyone who believes in our work and supports it.' The 100th library is set to be launched in early September.

Two suspects arrested in Goodwood with drugs worth an estimated R54 million

CAPE TOWN - An organised crime investigation has led to a massive drug bust in Goodwood, where two suspects - one from Tanzania and the other from Burundi - were arrested after being caught with drugs worth an estimated R54 million. Police say the suspects are due in court on Tuesday after being nabbed in Goodwood on Sunday. Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie says organised crime detectives acted on information which led them to a residence in Molteno Street in Goodwood on Sunday. Pojie says a 32-year-old Tanzanian man was arrested after officers initially confiscated six kilograms of heroin found in a cupboard. He says more heroin was found in another room, which led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man from Burundi. "The members expanded the search, leading to the discovery of 145kg of tik and 16kg of heroin found in the roof of the residence. The estimated street value is R53,3 million, bringing the total value of the discovery to R54.3million." Pojie says the arrests form part of an investigation by provincial organised crime unit detectives.
