Jake Knapp sets course record with 61 at Rocket Classic in Detroit

PHOTO: IMAGN IMAGES VIA REUTERS CONNECT DETROIT, Michigan - Jake Knapp's latest record day resulted in a course record at the Rocket Classic on June 27. Knapp went 7-under par over an eight hole stretch to propel him to a course record 11-under 61 at the Detroit Golf Club. Knapp, who began the day tied for 120th at the Rocket Classic, poured in an eagle and nine birdies on a bogey-free card that vaulted him from the cutline into contention. Knapp, 31, has established a reputation for being an extremely streaky player. In February, he recorded the 15th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history in the first round of the Cognizant Classic. He eventually tied for sixth after stumbling to a final round 72. Knapp fired an opening-round 63 in his most recent start at the RBC Canadian Open. He again posted a final round 72 to settle for a T27. Ranked 98th in the world, Knapp has one career victory on tour. That came at the 2024 Mexico Open, where he also posted a 63 in the first round and held on for a two-shot victory with a 71 on Sunday. 'I'm definitely not afraid of shooting a low number,' Knapp said. 'I feel like when I start making birdies, I want to make more. I was even kind of thinking about 59 when I stuck it close on my third to last for eagle and figured I could maybe eagle that and birdie the last two. 'I think when you're playing well just try to stay out of my own way and just kind of keep doing what I'm doing and making more birdies.' The June 27 course record came just a day after Knapp struggled to an even par 72 on a course that yielded a pair of 10-under 62s on the day. During the opening round, he managed just a lone birdie against one bogey. That changed quickly on June 27 as Knapp took advantage of a hot putter. Following three consecutive pars to open his round on the back nine, Knapp poured in three birdies over a four-hole stretch. He reached the par-5 17th hole in two and then drained a 34-foot eagle putt. After making his turn in 5-under 31, Knapp birdied six of his first eight holes on his inward nine to reach 11 under for the round and complete an 11-shot improvement from June 26. 'I was just kind of bummed last night because I felt like in the practice rounds and everything felt like I was hitting it pretty nice, and I know this course sets up well for me,' he said. 'So to shoot even par the first day just feels like you're shooting yourself in the foot, but feels nice to bounce back with 61. 'I just tried to play a little bit more aggressive, and for the most part we just went in with the mindset today that every pin was a green light so just tried to hit it at everything.' Jake Knapp sets course record with 61 at Rocket Classic in Detroit
June 27 - Jake Knapp's latest record day resulted in a course record at the Rocket Classic on Friday. Knapp went 7-under par over an eight hole stretch to propel him to a course record 11-under 61 at the Detroit Golf Club on Friday. Spartan golfer Ashton McCulloch has tough first round at 2025 Rocket Classic
With the PGA Tour returning to Detroit for the Rocket Classic, and the headlining sponsor being Rocket Mortgage, a major partner with MSU, recent MSU senior Ashton McCulloch was given a sponsors exemption into the field for the 2025 event. The event, taking place at Detroit Golf Club, was McCulloch's fourth event on the PGA Tour, while still competing as an amateur. The Spartan was looking to make his first cut on the tour, narrowly missing the cut by one stroke earlier this year at the RBC Canadian Open. Unfortunately for McCulloch, it was not his day on the course. An eight bogey, two birdie day left him at a final score of 78 (+6) on the day. While making the cut is highly improbable, McCulloch will still play his second round on Friday with an 8:57 a.m. tee time on the first tee. 2025 Rocket Classic predictions: Three long-shot PGA Tour picks at Detroit Golf Club
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. After a grueling six-week stretch that included two majors, two signature events, and the Memorial, the PGA Tour will hit a simmer for the next two weeks before ramping back up ahead of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush next month. The Rocket Classic, which tees off on Thursday at Detroit Golf Club, features a middling field that is headlined by Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, and Patrick Cantlay, who are the only players entered for this tournament priced under 20/1. Morikawa is the outright favorite at 12/1, while Bradley, fresh off his win at the Travelers, is 16/1, and Cantlay is right behind him at 18/1. The Rocket Classic has been a regular stop for the PGA Tour since 2019 and has a reputation for being one of the easiest setups on the circuit. Nate Lashley, who was an alternate entry, won the inaugural event in 2019 with a score of 25-under par, and since then, the winning scores have been -23, -18, -26, -24, and -18. Bettors should not only be prepared for a birdie-fest, but they should also be prepared for a surprise winner. We've seen some big names like Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau lift the trophy, but Detroit Golf Club has also been a happy hunting ground for long shots like Lashley, Cam Davis (twice), and Rickie Fowler. There is a chance that the cream rises to the top at Detroit Golf Club this week, but the conditions of this event – easy course, weak field – make it a wide-open tournament. Here are our favorite long-shot bets on the PGA Tour this week: Cameron Champ finished T9 at the 2025 RBC Canadian Open earlier this month. Getty Images 2025 Rocket Classic predictions Cam Davis (90/1, FanDuel) It's been a tough 2025 season for Cam Davis, but he's won this tournament two out of the six times it's been held. That's enough for me to bite considering the price we're being dealt. Davis has missed eight cuts in 18 starts this season, but he does have five top-20 finishes (including at the PGA Championship), so he's still able to get in the mix if he can get through the first two rounds. Cameron Champ (120/1, FanDuel): One of the most boom or bust players in the sport, Cameron Champ has spent most of this season on the Korn Ferry Tour after losing his status on the main circuit. His results have been mixed on the JV tour, but Champ has had some encouraging performances when he's gotten into PGA events, including the RBC Canadian Open, where he was the leader after 36 holes and finished T9. This is a course that rewards players who can hit the ball a mile, so it wouldn't be a shock to see Champ in the mix if he has the rest of his game in somewhat decent shape. Ryan Brehm (3,000/1, Bet365) OK, let's get crazy. On paper, you'd say that Ryan Brehm has almost no chance of even coming close to contending this week. He lost his PGA Tour card before this season, he has missed more cuts than he's made on the Korn Ferry this season, and he's currently ranked as the 1,062nd-best golfer in the world. That said, this tournament is set up for a player like Brehm to have a chance of contending if the stars (in Brehm's case many, many stars) align. Any professional golfer (Brehm is a former PGA Tour winner, after all) can dominate this track if things are clicking, and they won't have to beat a deep field filled with the best players in the world. We've already seen one Cinderella winner at this event (Lashley wasn't even listed on most betting boards when he won in 2019), so why not throw a very small wager on Brehm, a Michigan native who should be very familiar with these conditions?
