T-Mobile-owned MVNO reminds its iPhone subscribers to update in order to use RCS
Before Apple released iOS 18.4 in late March, only iPhone handsets connected to major U.S. carriers offered Rich Communication Services (RCS) as a messaging option for iOS users. For those unaware, RCS is the messaging platform that gives Android users many of the same features that iPhone users get when chatting with fellow iOS users with the Messages app. That means RCS brings to Android users: The ability to send longer messages. High-resolution photos and videos. Typing Indicators. Read Receipts. Ability to share larger files. Wi-Fi and Data connectivity. Of course, Apple being Apple, at first it wouldn't allow iPhone users to use RCS when messaging Android users on the RCS platform. Despite Google constantly attacking Apple asking it to support RCS, it took the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) legislation to make Apple feel as though it had no choice but to support RCS. As we noted, originally only the three major stateside carriers offered iPhone users the ability to use RCS when chatting with Android owners. Once Apple released iOS 18 .4, several T-Mobile MVNOs started hooking up their iPhone users with RCS compatibility, and one of these firms, Mint Mobile, has begun sending emails to its subscribers urging them to make sure that their iPhones are running at least iOS 18 .4. One important feature of RCS not available yet for cross-platform RCS messaging is end-to-end encryption. Currently, in-transit encryption is available for all messages sent over RCS including cross-platform chats. This means that your chats are encrypted as they travel over the internet between your device and RCS servers preventing your messages from getting intercepted by someone "listening in" on the network. Apple has always offered E2EE on messaging between iOS users. With both Apple and Google committed to eventually offering end-to-end encryption on cross-platform RCS messaging, the iOS Messages app and iMessage will soon no longer be a major selling point for phone buyers. During the Epic Games v. Apple lawsuit, internal Apple emails from Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, indicated that the company considers iMessage a good reason why parents should buy their kids an iPhone. Twilio, Orange Partner to Boost RCS Messaging in France
Twilio Inc. (NYSE:TWLO) is one of the best software infrastructure stocks to invest in. On June 11, during Transform London, Twilio announced a partnership with Orange, which is a leading telecommunications operator, to expand the use of RCS Business Messaging across France. The collaboration aims to provide French and international businesses with a rich, interactive, and secure communication experience directly within their customers' native messaging applications. As of June 1 this year, RCS already covers over 70% of the mobile base in France, which represents more than 45 million smartphones, and is projected to reach 85% by the end of the year. Orange has selected Twilio's expertise to facilitate this deployment. According to Twilio's 2025 State of Customer Engagement Report, 3 out of 4 businesses intend to invest in RCS messaging this year, and 81% of consumers prefer RCS over traditional SMS. The Mail on Sunday reported that the 58-year-old was told to stay away from classes at the Glasgow institution after the allegations came to light. No cell service? Android's Wi-Fi and satellite features help you send messages when you need them most
Did you know that your Android phone can still send messages even if you're stuck somewhere with no cell signal? It might sound surprising, but with the right features set up, you don't need to rely on mobile bars to stay connected. If you find yourself at a remote campsite too often, this feature could be a lifesaver for you. If you have access to Wi-Fi but no mobile network, you can use something called RCS messaging. RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. It's a modern upgrade to regular SMS and lets you send messages over Wi-Fi instead of your mobile data. This can be a lifesaver in places like airports, hotels, or even at a friend's house where the mobile network is weak but Wi-Fi is strong. To use RCS, you need to make sure Google Messages is your default messaging app. Here's how to set it up: Open Google Messages on your phone. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner. Go to Messages settings, then General, and tap on RCS Chats. Turn on RCS Chats. Once you've turned this on, you'll notice that when you try to send a message without a cell signal, you'll see a 'Send by WiFi' prompt instead of the usual SMS one. Just keep in mind, the person you're messaging also needs to have RCS enabled and use Google Messages. If both of you are set up, you can chat just like you would with regular texts, even if your phone can't find a network. Now, if you're in a place with no signal and no Wi-Fi, like out hiking or driving through remote areas, some new Android phones have a satellite messaging feature for emergencies. Right now, this is available on the Google Pixel 9 series and the Samsung Galaxy S25 series and is dependent on your service provider. Here's how it works. If you try to call emergency services and your phone can't find a signal, you'll get the option to use Satellite SOS. Just follow the instructions on your phone's screen. Your message will be sent to emergency responders using a satellite connection. This feature is designed for emergencies only, but it's good to know it's there if you ever need it. So, even if you're off the grid or in a dead zone, your Android phone has ways to help you stay connected or reach out for help. Set up these features before you need them, and you'll be ready for anything.
