TSA issues important clarification about ID cards

Published: Updated: The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been forced to issue a hilarious statement about which ID cards qualify as official identification while traveling. It came after a user on X, formerly known as Twitter , posted a picture of a bright yellow Waffle House customer card with the caption, 'TSA might want REAL ID, but I have the realest ID.' It read 'Matthew Cappucci, Meteorologist,' with an American flag in the right corner. Other comments read: 'This is an outrage. Waffle House trumps TSA all day every day,' and, 'This is your best tweet yet, @TSA.' One X user replied by posting an image of a Blockbuster membership card, writing, 'Will this do?' Cappucci followed up his post by writing: 'One of my greatest life accomplishments is being one of the only 90 people in this world that Waffle House follows.' It comes after the TSA responded to travelers who attempted to use their Costco cards as valid ID at the airport. US travelers are now required to have a federally approved REAL ID or passport to board a domestic flight , with a standard driver's license no longer cutting it. Still, some hopeful vacationers believed their trusty Costco membership cards would be their golden ticket through security. The TSA made it clear in a Facebook post this week that the membership card cannot act as a substitute.

Waffle House post about ‘realest ID' goes viral, prompting TSA response on social media

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) entered a social media debate this week by clarifying that the Waffle House IDs possessed by some customers of the popular restaurant will 'not suffice' as personal identification for travel. A flight passenger posted a photo on X of his yellow Waffle House ID with the caption, 'TSA might want REAL ID, but I have the realest ID.' The post garnered some 2.1 million views, with thousands of reposts and likes. TSA responded to the social post by saying the ID does not comply with federal rules and will not be accepted at security check points. 'Respectfully, no … Waffle House IDs will not suffice as a REAL ID alternative (sorry),' TSA responded on X. Fox News Digital reached out to Waffle House for further details. Many X users took to the comments section to weigh in on the post. 'How does one even acquire this?' asked a man. Another user commented, 'And I thought this was America.' Said yet another person, 'I have never been so jealous of an internet stranger.' A sign in Miami International Airport, Homeland Security advertising the REAL ID. One man joked, 'I thought [the] Costco card was the realest ID.' A Waffle House restaurant on July 30, 2024 in Miami Gardens, Florida. Getty Images A few weeks ago, the TSA advised travelers not to use a Costco card as identification. 'We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person, but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not,' the agency wrote on Facebook. On May 7, the REAL ID requirement took effect, requiring flyers to obtain the new identification with a star in the upper right corner in order to fly. Other forms of identification that are accepted in lieu of a REAL ID include a valid US passport or passport card, DHS trusted traveler cards such as Global Entry, Department of Defense IDs, permanent resident cards and border crossing cards, according to the TSA.

TSA expects over 18.5 million people to travel by air over busy Fourth of July holiday

Offers family-friendly travel tips and customer service options WASHINGTON, June 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is staffed and ready to screen over 18.5 million travelers at the nation's airport security checkpoints during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. This year's projection includes Tuesday, July 1, through Monday, July 7, with the highest passenger volume – approximately 2.9 million – expected on Sunday, July 6. TSA screened nearly 3.1 million travelers on Sunday, June 22, the busiest single day in the agency's history. "TSA continues to work closely with our industry partners and ensure our airport security checkpoints are fully staffed and prepared to handle the heavy rush of traffic," said TSA Acting Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill. "We are deploying technologies and procedures to improve security and enhance the passenger experience, including for families. We ask travelers to pack their patience, especially during peak travel days, as we work to provide maximum hospitality to our customers." For families with vacation plans, TSA has practices in place to expedite screening and make traveling with children less stressful. Children 12 and under may accompany a TSA PreCheck®-enrolled parent or guardian in TSA PreCheck lanes without restriction. Children will not be separated from their parent/guardian. Strollers, baby carriers, and car and booster seats are allowed through the checkpoint but must be screened by X-ray. Modified screening procedures are in place to reduce the likelihood of a pat-down. Text us at 275-872 ("AskTSA") or @AskTSA for quick answers to questions about going through the TSA checkpoint. Passengers with disabilities or medical conditions who require additional assistance may contact TSA Cares by calling (855) 787-2227 at least 72 hours in advance of their flight. Additionally, passengers should bring their REAL IDs or other acceptable forms of IDs to the checkpoint. Since implementing REAL ID on May 7, nearly 94% of passengers are presenting a REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID, such as a passport. Travelers can find a full list of acceptable IDs on TSA's website. As a reminder, travelers need to "Prepare, Pack, Declare" when flying with firearms. Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container and transported as checked baggage only. TSA encourages all travelers to pack smart by starting with an empty bag and reviewing the list of prohibited items before heading to the airport. ‘Zero tolerance for fraud': Miami tightens driver's license procedures

Miami is increasing the stringency of document checks presented by driver's license applicants as proof of their legal status. On social media, Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez issued a stern warning to those seeking driver's licenses issued by the state of Florida that his office, where driver's license applications are currently processed, will not tolerate fraud related to documentation submitted by applicants. 'Using false documents to obtain a driver's license or state ID is a crime. In Florida, driving privileges are only granted to those who meet all legal requirements, including proof of legal presence and verified residency,' he wrote on his X account on Thursday. 'As Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, I am committed to protecting the integrity of our services. No more shortcuts. Zero tolerance for fraud,' he added. Fernandez emphasized potential attempts to misuse or manipulate the system by submitting documents that do not meet verification standards, including fake bank statements or utility bills (water or electricity), to obtain a driver's license or REAL ID. He also stated that the document constituted a 'privilege' and not a right. He clarified that providing false documentation constituted a crime. 'The use of fraudulent documents not only violates the law, but also undermines the trust we strive to build in our community,' he said. 'As Miami-Dade County's tax collector, I am fully committed to protecting the integrity of our services. Our office is strengthening fraud protocols, implementing new technology, and training our staff to identify and prevent these illegal attempts,' he stated. Increased demand for driver's licenses Since early May, the REAL ID has become standard for domestic travel at U.S. airports, a requirement that Florida drivers' licenses and identification cards meet. These documents also serve as proof of regularized immigration status in the country, amidst the ongoing operations and raids by several federal agencies targeting illegal immigration. Last month, a new state regulation went into effect limiting the term of the validity of driver's licenses for certain legal immigrants. Meanwhile, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) centers have faced long lines and chaos in Miami amid increased demand for driver's licenses and REAL IDs. In response to the chaos, the Miami-Dade tax collector's office decided to incorporate such procedures for the benefit of taxpayers. Fernández has opened several new offices, while promising to expand services to other areas of the county where they are currently unavailable. To get a driver's license in Florida, you can present several identification documents, including: ▪ Permanent residence card or green card ▪ Proof of Social Security Number ▪ Bank or credit card statements ▪ Public service receipts, such as water, electricity, and gas, in the applicant's name.

Your Stories Q&A: Any plans to redevelop the old Club 37 in Salina?

SALINA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — You ask, we answer! Viewer Question: Club 37 in Salina has been sitting empty for years. Are there any plans to tear down the old club and redevelop the property? Club 37, off Route 11, near the Salina/Clay border, has been closed for over 20 years. Before it shuttered, it was the place to be seen on Friday nights. Many of our viewers have great memories, spending time at the nightclub in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Now, the once hot spot has become an eyesore of a vacant lot. The club is still standing, but it can be hard to see from Route 11 because of the overgrown bushes. Those bushes block the building and the graffiti that's been painted on the exterior. The viewer who asked the question was hopeful there was a plan for redeveloping the run-down piece of property, seeing how just a few doors down, the vacant Ponderosa was recently renovated. That building is now the new home of the Daily Diner. There are no plans for redevelopment on the radar. For years, the property has been listed for lease or sale by Pavia Real Estate. Dominic Pavia told NewsChannel 9, there's been interest over the years, but no deal has made it across the finish line. He said the property is currently available for redevelopment. In the event a deal is made in the future, the old Club 37 will be demolished for new construction. We'll keep tabs on this property and let you know if there are any developments on redevelopment.
