PM Modi to inaugurate 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line: All about Mizoram's 26-year ‘dream turned reality'
During a meeting with Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to inaugurate the new Bairabi-Sairang railway line and Sairang railway station in Aizawl district, 'at the earliest convenience', according to an official statement, PTI reported. Posting about CM Lalduhoma's meeting with the prime minister, the CMO's official X account wrote, 'Chief Minister Shri @Lal_Duhoma met Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi in New Delhi today and discussed key development issues of Mizoram.' First conceptualised in September 1999, the Bairabi-Sairang railway line has finally brought Mizoram's capital Aizawl on the country's railway map after overcoming unprecedented challenges in terms of alignment, short working seasons and frequent landslides. Officials said the dream which Railways saw in 1999 turned into a reality when it was commissioned in June this year by the Commissioner of Railway Safety. The 51.38-km long railway line will soon be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 1999, when engineers learnt that a preliminary survey was not possible due to thick forest, poor visibility, and other local issues, it was agreed to conduct a reconnaissance survey, which involved a rough route assessment, according to documents. "Under a Preliminary Engineering cum-Traffic Survey (PET) a detailed examination of the route is done. As a PET survey was found not feasible, the Board was requested to change it to Reconnaissance Engineering-Cum-Traffic (RET) survey, which the Railway Board agreed on July 15, 2003," a senior railway official said. He added, "The RET survey for the Bairabi-Sairang Rail link was carried out by the Northeast Frontier Railways in March 2006. Based on this, RITES was asked to carry out a pre-construction Survey and Geo-Technical Investigation in 2008 for a new BG Railway line from Bairabi-Sairang. Accordingly, RITES submitted its final report in August 2011." Considering an important link between Mizoram and the rest of the country, the then UPA government declared this project as a "National Project" in 2008-09. Subsequently, PM Modi laid its foundation stone on November 29, 2014. The NF Railways completed the land acquisition process by 2014-2015 and a year later, in 2015-16, it started the construction in full swing. Vinod Kumar, chief engineer of the project, said, "The working season in the area is of very short duration and limited to only four-five months (i.e., from November to March) in a year and no work is possible from April to October due to the prolonged duration of monsoon with heavy rainfall." "The alignment is traversing through hilly terrain, deep valleys and gorges requiring construction of tunnels and tall bridges/ due to frequent interruptions to traffic on the National Highway between Guwahati to Silchar, transportation of materials is a big challenge even today," he said. Engineers working on the site said the project access/site roads are prone to frequent landslides and failures and become slippery even after a single rain, resulting in the stoppage of movement of materials at the site. "The project access roads are narrow and with steep gradients, on which big trucks/trailers cannot be used. Therefore, materials brought from outside on big trucks/ trailers were transhipped into small carriers and then taken from the highway to the project site," an NFR official said. He added," Transportation of large cranes for erection of bridge girders was very difficult. These were transported after dismantling of major parts and reassembling at the site." Engineers working on the site said even local labour was unavailable in Mizoram and all the labourers were brought from other states. "Mizoram is the remotest state in the Northeast with the project located in completely hilly areas with no mobile network at most of the project sites and therefore the labourers hesitated to come to Mizoram for work and there has always been a shortage of labour in the project," Kumar said. He added that suitable construction materials (i.e. sand, stone chips etc.) were also not available in Mizoram and were transported from adjacent states like Assam, West Bengal, Meghalaya etc. According to the NFR, the line has 48 tunnels covering 12.853 km, 55 major and 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges and nine road underbridges, with one of the bridges numbered at 196 boasting of a height of 104 metres, 42 metres taller than the Qutub Minar. Among other matters discussed included the Thenzawl Peace City Project, requested to declare the Aizawl-Thenzawl road as a National Highway, the implementation progress of the Handholding Policy, and the situation in the Chin Hills of Myanmar and its implications for Mizoram, according to an ANI report. CM Lalduhoma also highlighted the need to expand piped gas connectivity to households in Aizawl, noting the ongoing ₹ 9,265 crore Gas Pipeline Project being implemented by Indradhanush Gas Grid (IGGL). He urged timely execution to reduce dependence on gas cylinders, it added. In response, Modi assured full support and expressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Mamit District that proactive steps be taken to facilitate the pipeline work. (With inputs from PTI and ANI)

Friends recall DD Mabuza's last days and role in struggle
Former deputy president David Mabuza spent 21 days in a Russian hospital, where he had gone for a check-up last month, before his death on Thursday. This is according to Welcome 'Mkapla' Nkuna, who was Mabuza's first bodyguard when he became Mpumalanga education MEC in 1994. Mabuza died at a hospital in Sandton, Johannesburg, after years of suffering from the effects of an alleged poisoning at his birthday celebrations in 2015. Since then, he had been receiving treatment in Russia. 'What I know is that he was in Russia for check-ups for a period of 21 days before he came back to South Africa,' said Nkuna. 'We would talk on the phone whenever he was in Russia, to a point that I'd become used to him going there. I did not see him when he came back to South Africa, and I was surprised to find out that he had been hospitalised in Joburg in such a short space of time.' We are saddened today by the loss of a leader who was grounded in activism at the early stages of his political career and who came to lead our nation and shape South Africa's engagement with our continental compatriots and the international community in his role as deputy president. President Cyril Ramaphosa Desmond Moela, a family friend, told Sowetan on Thursday night he had last spoken to Mabuza earlier in the day. 'We were speaking about general stuff and family. I'm still hurt, my brother. We are really hurt about this. I saw him today ... He was really not well,' said Moela. Mabuza came to prominence when he became Mpumalanga's first education MEC in 1994. His political influence rose beyond the province's borders when he became its premier in 2009 and gained political power that at that time influenced the decisions of the ANC's NEC. It was during his premiership that he earned the nickname 'The Cat' for his stealthy political machinations and 'backroom' negotiation style. One of his biggest contributions to the country's politics was his game-changing move at the ANC's 54th national conference in Nasrec in 2017 to thwart the RET (radical economic transformation) faction aligned with Jacob Zuma's dynasty. In 2018 Mabuza became the country's deputy president and stepped down in 2023 without making much impression as he was largely absent from the public eye. President Cyril Ramaphosa sent his condolences to Mabuza's family, friends and colleagues. 'We are saddened today by the loss of a leader who was grounded in activism at the early stages of his political career and who came to lead our nation and shape SA's engagement with our continental compatriots and the international community in his role as deputy president,' said Ramaphosa. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula described Mabuza as a great leader who dedicated his life to serving the people. 'From his days in the struggle against apartheid to his leadership as premier of Mpumalanga and later as deputy president, he was a committed cadre who carried the values of unity, discipline and transformation,' said Mbalula. Rise Mzansi leader Songezo Zibi said Mabuza was a freedom fighter, seasoned politician, unionist and operator. 'The Cat is no more. We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Mabuza family and the ANC. Lala ngoxolo [rest in peace],' he said. ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said Mabuza was a significant figure in South African political life. His contributions and influence spanned decades and will leave a mark on our country's democratic journey. 'While varying reflections on his legacy will no doubt unfold in the days to come, ActionSA simply wishes to extend compassion to his family as they begin this difficult mourning journey. We pray for their strength, peace and comfort during this time of loss,' Mashaba said on Thursday night. Mabuza matriculated at Khumbula High School, furthered his studies at Mngwenya College of Education in Mpumalanga, and later acquired his Bachelor's degree at Unisa. He cut his political teeth as an activist in the student movement and served as secretary of the Azanian Students Organisation in 1984. He later served as the chairperson of the National Education Union of South Africa from 1986 to 1988. He was co-ordinator of the National Education Crisis Committee from 1987 to 1989, and chairperson of Sadtu from 1988 to 1991.
